Flight from an unknown location into the US Naval Air Station in Alameda, California.
I'm attempting a new technique to convert the 18fps material to 24fps more elegantly. This should bare less artifacts than previous uploads. An additional pass was made to minimize the the inherent flicker that seems to come from this spring driven camera.
Thank you for watching!

Hello I don't know if you still use this account as it has been over a year but I am going to be in alameda in a few days and was wondering if I could have any tips for exploring the base or any other cool spots I should check out.

That's the Alameda Navy Base I remember. I was in a band that played music at the White Hat Club around 1980 and my mom Worked in The Prop Shop for years. All gone now. The heart was ripped out of the town when the Navy left..

At 0:30 was the headquarters for the Marine Barracks (later the Marine Corps Security Forces Company in 1991) which in 1958 provided security/ military police for NAS Alameda. It was my first duty station as a late teen or so in 1992, so Alameda to a degree will always have a place in my heart. Refreshing to see this video of the base alive, clean, and active.

My Hometown. I was born 8 years after this. I love how clean and white the buildings are and green green grass. The place is rented out to every known industry like winery and vodka makers and tech stuff. but all the buildings look like their boarded up or dilapidated with the runways being used as roads. It was a fun city growing up there in the 60 and 70s as a young kid. Thank you for sharing. everything visually has a different feel. like when I was a kid. somewhere things became less appealing today. :D

As a kid I used to travel to NAS Alameda from Fremont with my grandparents. Grandpa was 25 years, Navy and a combat veteran in WW2. Recollections of “the base”? Fishing from the pier next to the Seaplane Lagoon. Mailing packages at the P/X in the parking lot (it reminded me of a TV show set). Shopping the Commissary and the Exchange. The Exchange was like a weird little department store but for a 9 year old they sold Millennium Falcons and that’s all I cared about. There was a little “boardwalk” in front of the retail shops. An ice cream parlor, barber and hot dog place. Lastly I got to tour the USS Nimitz during Fleet Week. You cannot imagine the thrill of being 9-10 years old and walking through the gangways of an active aircraft carrier and having the enlisted personnel make way. Regrettably the rules in the early 1980’s stated that once a young man turned 12 he could no longer get on the base. Plus Pop died in 1985 when I was 13. (deep sigh) Now? Our country is going to shit. There wasn’t a man on that base in the 1970’s & 80’s who would put up with what we see today. God bless each & every one of them.

Lived just across the street from the base from 1958-1967 (my dad worked there). Saw my first color movie there at the base theater. Alameda was just a sleepy little town back then, but such a great place to live

note that the top deck of the Bay Bridge is still 2-way traffic at this time. Until 1958 the lower deck was reserved for trucks and trains.

My dad was there in 1958-59 for the USS Oriskany refit (Commander John Warren Ramsey USN 1941-63). He was Ex-O on the refit project and training the Air Group Officers to prep for operations. Oriskany was on the other side of the bay (not in video) where they dry-docked ships for repairs and upgrades. I am pretty sure his squadron (VF-11/VF-111 Sundowners) was in and out of Alameda in WWII or Korea. I visited CV-12 Hornet there in 2018, his picture is on the wall of the Sundowners exhibit on the ship. Thanks for the glimpse of the base, she was quite impressive in her day, shame to see it so empty even today.

My father was still in the USNR then, I remember meeting Admiral Nimitz at the officer's mess in Alameda or Treasure Island. My father was an aerial navigator and by that time navigating in Neptunes every month or so. You could see he was happy.

For anyone else who falls down the rabbit hole of "what aircraft is that," it seems to be a Lockheed P-2, probably a P2-V7 or similar ASW variant.

Jeff, remarkable film. I never expected to get to see my town on your channel! When you say "Flight from an unknown location into US Naval Air Station in Alameda" do you mean that before this section of the film (something you've not yet uploaded) your grandfather flew from somewhere else to Alameda? I ask because (I live in Alameda) this video begins driving around the naval base in Alameda, then flying around and finally landing back at the Alameda naval base.
@jeffaltman7313
@jeffaltman7313 4 года назад
Hey Gene. Thanks for watching! My grandfather served in the Naval Air Reserve based just outside of Chicago at Glenview NAS, so I presumed the flight started from there but I don't want to make any assumptions. These films were edited together by him and not necessarily in chronological order. I've noticed sometimes he would start one of these out with an establishing shot already at the destination and then circle back to the trip. Having that sign up front is basically a title card for what we're watching.
@gene_wood
@gene_wood 4 года назад
@@jeffaltman7313 Aha, ok that makes sense. Ya, if it's not chronological then indeed maybe we're seeing him drive around the Alameda base before we see him fly into Alameda. I've shared your story and channel with numerous friends and family (living here in the SF Bay Area and in Seattle) and they've loved getting to time travel back to the 50's. It really makes me wonder why this kind of view into the past isn't more broadly available, why institutions aren't doing what you're doing. I suspect because there aren't skilled colorists with access to film scanners and an interest in donating their time. Anyhow, we're all very fortunate that you're working on this project, thank you!
