Onions make our eyes burn because of chemistry. When an onion is cut, it releases a gas. When that gas combines with water, it turns into an acid - and we know there is a LOT of water within, and around our eyes so that is why it burns. It is a very mild acid, so don't let that word scare you. It won't damage your eyes. It just hurts and is annoying until your eyes flush it out by making you "cry". SO HERE IS WHAT YOU DO! 1. Grab an onion 2. pull the loose, dry skin off the onion (the flakey part) as much as you can 3. Grab a knife, and cutting board, place the onion on its side, and you are going to cut both ends off the onion 4. Place the onion vertical. Cut it straight down the center into two halves 5. Now, you can grab the edges of the skin and it should peal right off, often times as one piece. 6. Rinse both halves of the onion under the kitchen facet. 7. Now place one half on its base you just created when cutting off its end, and slice the onion Why do it this way? By rinsing the onion under the sink, you cause the gas to mix with water immediately so the gas cannot go airborne and combine with the water in your eyes.
