Thanks for the kind words. I really concentrated on the comms hard right from the beginning...I figured it would really lower my workload not having to "think" so much about what to say. Honestly, I started listening to liveatc.net and tried to listen and learn as much as possible from there. Timmy really did a great job of making me take the lead with the radio...trial by fire. I guess that between studying and listening to live radio AND having a great instructor, it sort of just happened.

He is still taking new students, but on a person-by-person basis. He's going the part 135 route, but will still be teaching for a while I think. You can find his contact info from the crystal coast helicopters website. Thanks for watching!

Also, I try to say as little as humanly possible when I'm talking...especially when talking to towers. Think first, then speak...it works out great. Mostly, just repeat what they say to you...that was the most difficult part at first. You are concentrating on flying and not hurting yourself or the ship...and on top of that you have to listen to someone, remember it, then say it back to them. It gets easier the longer you sit in the seat and the more comfortable you get with flying.

Your videos are fantastic- thanks o much for haring- and as the other comments say- what an outstanding instructor Timmy is- I'm in CA about to start my flight training- so hard to find a school and flight instructor this great- how many hours does Timmy have? Does he do other heli work beyond tours/ instruction? Wish I could train with him but not logistically possible..you are becoming an excellent pilot too- keep up the excellent work- fly safe!
@cincoboatworks

I have the MSA Gallet LH250. It is very comfortable and lightweight...and the visors are GREAT to fly with. Much better than sunglasses IMHO. It would be comfortable inside the R22 if I were shorter. I'm 6'4" and 240lbs...so it's a tight squeeze. I have to slouch down a bit in the seat to have adequate helmet clearance. If you are shorter, you won't have a problem with it. The comms are good, but not as nice as Bose headsets. It wasn't necessary to get, but I wanted it for added safety.

Man, this guy really knows all aspects of flying. Would really love to use Timmy. Is he all booked up? I lost his number out there. Thanks a bunch Cinco Boats. Keith Davis, student pilot.

Timmy has around 5000 hours I'm guessing...but it's probably more. He's about to get his part 135 now, but he's finishing up his current students first before he transitions into that arena. CA to NC would be a long flight in a 22 :)

Thank you for responding cincoboats. I understand the 135. You are an excellent pilot. How did you catch on to the radio com. So fast? Take care.

Hi, can you please tell me what you use to record these videos and how you get it to record all the conversations over the radio?
@justinspirational
@justinspirational 10 лет назад
that youtube link does not work- would love to see that video-thank you- as comms seem pretty challenging for me and would like to master asap as well- any other resources for mastering comms? 'comm1' software?

...being that most deaths in helicopter operations are due to death from post-impact fires...and most of those deaths happen because the pilot was knocked out, I figured that a little head protection was not such a bad thing.
@cincoboatworks
@cincoboatworks 10 лет назад
I just listened to liveatc (dot) net and tried to repeat everything that the tower's were telling the pilots. Unless you are flying in a lot of Bravo and Charlie airspace, you won't have any problem at all with the comm's. Once you get used to flying, you will be able to concentrate on what the tower / traffic is saying and you will be able to respond accordingly...it's not that big of a deal. Seems like it is at first, but it's really not.

Forgot to ask- what's the make/ model of helmet you are wearing please and is it comfortable inside the R22? Necessary to get when starting out training?
@Pushnlbs7
@Pushnlbs7 11 лет назад
Whats your CFI's name? He's awesome!
@justinspirational
@justinspirational 10 лет назад
Hi- did you stop using the helmet in later videos/training because it got too uncomfortable? Now I'm a rated pilot I'm thinking of finally investiing in a helmet but at 6'3 in a R22 might be too cramped (seen a used but in good condition Gentex SPH-5 available for a good price, though heavier than the MSA Gallet LH250)
@cincoboatworks
@cincoboatworks 10 лет назад
I still wear the helmet from time to time...It's totally comfortable to wear. It's a little warm during the summer, but not too bad. I'm a little over 6'4" and it's a tight squeeze in the 22, but once you get in and situated it is fine. There is more than enough room to wear it in the 44. I've been considering getting rid of my 250 if you're interested. Good shape, Dark outer lens, clear inner. L/XL shell size...morale patches not included :)
@justinspirational
@justinspirational 10 лет назад
Cinco Boatworks Hi- Thanks for your reply- promising to hear you manage wearing it OK in the R22 cockpit as I'm 6'3 and have just invested in a gentex sph-5 helmet but have yet to test it in the cockpit though I feel I have to make it work somehow- I did my entire PPL without a helmet but the more I've looked into this industry the more ways I've learned of how things that can go wrong and wearing a helmet has been proven to save lives and so why not wear every time- the pros do, so especially why not us- like driving a motorcycle- wearing a helmet is common sense- as flying helis is inherently risky. .I won't be needing your helmet of course as I have one now thanks- hard to find one my size as well- got the XL sized gentex & swapped out the liner for a XXL liner..

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xBJwg7pch4Q.html This is one of my favorite videos from my training as it relates to comm work. On the return trip, I was asked to do something that I was unsure of how to do by the tower at Cherry Point MCAS (KNKT). I found that using the "I'm a student pilot" card really helps and they are very eager to help you out if you are unsure of what they are asking for.
