Flight Unlimited was developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos in 1997 for Windows.
After first Flight Unlimited which focused mostly on flight model and aerobatics, this time we've got a big chunk of land (FU1 only had few small repeating areas) - San Francisco Bay. What differnetiated it from Microsoft Flight Simulator though was that the terrain was modelled with unparelleled quality for the time. With high resolution terrain mesh and aerial photos for textures, the flight sims never looked more real. Atmospheric effects were on similar level - raindrops seen on your windshield refracted the light quite realistically and were influenced by upcoming wind. Even today this effect still holds up pretty well.
But the pretty graphics and sounds was not all - this sim was probably the first one that let you experience actual VFR flying. On top of that IFR was also implemented with several VORs you could tune into, ATC you could talk to and restricted airspaces you had to request to fly into.
But free flight was not the only way to enjoy this sim. There were also plenty of "adventures" (akin to FSX missions) for you to fly. In this video I present one of them - note that playing them repeatedly can provide different experience as some events may or may not occur.
Most important part - aircraft. We've got 5 aircraft to play with, with additional one patched in later (Fokker Dr I). The base aircraft were Trainer (basically Cessna - perhaps they didn't get the rights to use the name?), Beechcraft Baron (2 engine), Piper Arrow, de Havilland Beaver (floats) and P-51D Mustang.
This game will actually run on modern Windows with the help of dgVoodoo2 or DDrawCompat, but due to high CPU frequency the ground handling will be broken. That's why I'm running this on PCem emulating Pentium II clocked at 233MHz with Voodoo3. If you want to know more on how to set it up check out this vid:

I am blown away by this pc flight sim! For a pc game from 1997, the graphics and realism on this were so far ahead of its time. In my opinion, even more advanced than the MFS98 of the same year, which was already considered realistic according to flight sim international. I'm so glad I just recently came across this sim series.

This had better ATC than MSFS does now. Thanks for the memories!

A wonderful product of its time. Wish we still had a tiny fraction of the magic these games managed to have. Simple yet much more immersive than most high fidelity games.

I loved Flight Unlimited 2 and 3. In fact, I loved them so much that I used FU3 exclusively between 2000 and 2008. The terrain graphics in the Microsoft Flight Simulator series at that time were pretty poor in my opinion, and not even close to the high resolution (for the time) photoscenery in FU3. I used the FU2 San Francisco scenery region in FU3, and also created a huge number of scenery packages for both high resolution scenery regions (with the help of others for new 3D models). I also extensively reworked the taxiways, lighting and AI pathways at all of the airports in the Seattle region (some of these had been left in a bit of a sloppy mess when FU3 was released prematurely), and updated many of the airports in the San Francisco region (I was particularly proud of the updates that I made to KSJC San Jose International, as this allowed the heavy jets to operate there). As others have already mentioned, the ATC system was way ahead of its time, and still holds up well against the ATC in today's flight simulators. Thank you for the trip down memory lane. FU2 and 3 will always have a special place in my heart.

WTF?! Droplets? Animated? In 1997?! Freakin' amazing! ATC is also more advanced that in the other Simulator of Digital Cockpits.

I loved the Flight Unlimited series. The first one was cool because it was about the only aerobatics-focused sim at the time. If I recall, Flight Unlimited II was the only GA sim with rain on the windshild effects. Sadly, Flight Unlimited III was the final installment for the series. Thanks for sharing.

I spend countless hours playing this. Great sim. I remember flying the Beaver in the rain from Lake Beryssa to Oakland as if it was yesterday.😂

I just now read the briefing which explained why I thought I was hearing X-Files type music at mission start lol. I like that kind of imaginative mission for a private aviation company. I would have loved that had I played this sim as a teenager. Although between the thunderstorm, raindrops, closed in overcast atmosphere, air conditioning and really relaxed ATC voice overs Mr. Mox Fulder would have probably never made it to the Navy carrier as I would have fallen asleep at the controls in-flight somewhere along the way and the "package" would likely have sunk to the ocean floor as special agent Fulder then is extracted by an intrepid SAR helicopter rushed out from the USS Enterprise to save us. I wonder what was in the "package"???

That's got some nice atmosphere to it especially the carrier landing in the storm and with the interesting voice overs. Those rain drop effects are really cool looking too. I'm curious now to know when was the first time I ever saw rain drops on windshield effects in a sim but its just been too long to remember. I imagine sims I played may have done it before but the only one that come's to mind is FS9/FS2004. I do recall playing a demo that I got from somewhere(perhaps on another game CD or from a magazine)of the first Flight Unlimited I believe. I just remember a desert location and an acrobatic plane and remembered it feeling pretty cool for flight game. Speaking of carrier landings, I think my first MSFS experience was my friend's copy of MSFS 5 being installed on our family laptop. I remember enjoying attempted carrier landings not only for the fun of it but also so that I could get a real close look at the F-18 Hornet model parked on the deck it if memory serves. Damson, have you ever played Microsoft's space simulator? My friend had that one too and likewise shared it with me and I remember being fascinated by that as much as MSFS. I loved the lunar lander scenarios.

I don't believe I played MS Space Simulator, but back when I was still a student at the University I played a lot of Orbiter. IIRC I even got to the Earths orbit to meet the ISS and back to glider land back at Edwards - which was quite an achievement.

Those amazing rendered Raindrops are still some of the (Maybe five? 🤔) best in FlightSim History. -Even those of MSFS 2004 & X are much worse in comparison. I think those in "Pro Pilot 99" and "Fly!" were quite good, now "FlightGear" has really good Effects like Icing on the F-15 👌

Thats really good for a simulator from 1997. I was playing Ms flight sim 98 alot when i was younger but thid thing looks really fun. Was this sim "modable"?
@damsonn
@damsonn 4 месяца назад
There was official adventure editor for making missions and IIRC there were plenty of modded aircraft too (or perhaps those were for FU3?).
