Flip or Tilt Screen? What do you guys think...are you a flip screen or a tilt screen kind of person!? I have cameras with both and I can't decide...🤔
If you have a sony A7C, don't get the SmallRig L-bracket for it...

Since I do mostly street photography I definitely prefer the tilt screen. Using a fully articulating screen immediately alerts people that their picture is being taken and makes things a lot more difficult.

It's impossible to photograph with a flip screen. It's an absolute trash and it's ruining the life for many photographers. Personally I'll prefer to never photograph again, or return to medium format film, if tilt screen disappear. I really don't understand why they are destroying photo cameras with features only needed for video.
@tonypaulprince
@tonypaulprince 9 месяцев назад
@@NeKryXe well, impossible? Seems a little harsh 😆 But my second reservation is that it seems like it would be easy to break off, sticking out like that and connected with only one hinge. I wouldn't want to carry it around worrying about breaking it all the time.

I think the Fuji version with the 3 way tilt is the best solution for photographers and most video filming tasks. Flip screens are definitely something for vlogging but other than that I don't see any use case they would be superior 🤔

I never take selfies and never vlog so a flip screen is OK. But as you said it is useless for holding the camera low in portrait mode. Fuji had a solution for that with the X-T3, and then they changed it to a tilt screen in X-T4.

I've had both, but I prefer the 2 axis tilt screen on the Fuji x-t3--you can tilt out the screen in either horizontal or vertical orientation. The only thing you can't do with it is selfie/vlog monitor, and that's not something I've ever been into. With the flippy screen I really only once found it useful for shooting sideways (I was riding on a bus and wanted to catch some passing street scenes without disturbing the passenger next to me.) I was always a little nervous about breaking it off, and I found it annoying to have to flip and twist just to use it to view when shooting (something I rarely did--I usually used the viewfinder). I'd have to give up the 2-axis tilt screen if I ever upgrade to the x-t4, so, I don't know...

I have zero use for a flippy screen, and for me personally I see it as a bit of a venerability. What I do like is Fuji's alternative that can be tilted in/out when I'm shooting low or high in portrait orientation.

It is definitely a weak spot on the articulating part...it'll be interesting to see how long it lasts. Fuji's option does look really good. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I like the tilt screen the most. I have the Pentax mx1 that uses a tilt screen and it’s good for street photography. I think the flip screen like you said in the video is best for portraits type shots from the hip level like taking car photography. But tilt is definitely better way to go.

I'm very happy with the tilt screen I have and if I do video then I would use an external monitor. And for that I like 7" over 5" because of the added size to help see what's in focus.

Fuji style 3 axes tilt is the best compromise for me as you can also angle the screen in portrait mode. I don't like the off-axis screen when composing. It adds too much volume to the camera and makes it less intuitive to level your shot. The single holding hinge is also by design more fragile as well. RU-vidrs need to stop pushing for flippy screens, especially for high-end cameras. Very few people need to film themselves on a daily basis with a full-frame camera.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 года назад
Thanks for sharing Alexandre. I did point out the advantages of a tilt screen...but I should have talked about the disadvantages of any articulating screen being more fragile as well...that being said, there is more to a flip screen than just filming yourself, but the fuji style would probably be a better alternative. Thanks for watching 👍

I definitely want the flip-out screen. I do a lot of nightscape astrophotography and orient the camera vertically for MW shots, etc. The flip-out screen allows me to get really close to the ground, helping with foreground subjects. This is also true for people portraits, and shooting arms extended over head. I've been using the tilt screens for years, and am so glad they've added the flip-out screen to some of the cameras. It allows easier access to challenging angles. Wish I could get it on the a7r4. But, not yet, sadly.

As far as I can tell the "flip" screen seems to be the "fully articulated", which should serve well those that like the "tilt" screen, the full-articulated, and the ones that would just flip the screen to the outside, and use it like that. As a wildlife enthusiast, and a Sony shooter since the A77V,, I usually close it and use the viewfinder constantly (unless I shoot marco, and then I can always flip it , so I really appreciate Sony's return to a flip screen.

I’m considering buying an A7 M3 in 2024 because I much prefer the tilt screen to the flip screen on the A7 M4. I have an A6700 and hate the flip screen and miss wildlife shots because I can’t lineup telefocal lens quick enough with the screen off centre when using the rear screen to get low-level shots

I like both and I have cameras of each type, but flippy has an edge, for the reasons you mentioned. The only advantage of tilt that I can think of (besides what you said) is that it is marginally more discrete for candid street shots, but overall I prefer flippy, and that’s for photography....I don’t do any selfie or volgging at al....

Other advantages of tilt is that they don't get in the way of straps, they stay on the lens axis, they are faster to tilt since you don't have to fold them out and turn them, they don't get in the way of the ports on the side, they don't interfere with L-brackets and probably also better for durability

I don't really understand the argument for a simple tilt screen. It is nice that it's not out to the side, but the advantages to a flip screen are far too many to get rid of just so the screen is perfectly behind the lens. Obviously the Panasonic S1H type of screen where you can have both is best, but I would take a flip over a tilt any day.

In the age of the SLT (A77V, A77ii, A99, A99ii), Sony used a fully articulated screen which was THE BOMB !! -It was good for vloggers, for tilters, for those who preferred it flat at the back, or people like me which prefer it closed and protected from the elements, because e never use it in the field, since I shoot wildlife exclusively, and use my viewfinder. The only use I had was extending it and tilting to close-up on bugs and wildflowers, where I find the current tilt screen limited in motion relative to the old SLT cameras. --I still find the fully articulated screen to be the most useful for most users, and do not know why Sony did not revert back to it. IT JUST MAKES THE MOST SENSE !!

Hi Mike: I have had all three types of screens; no screen on my Nikon D810, flippy screen on my Olympus M1 Mark ii and now the tilt screen on my Sony A7iii. Personally, I loved having the flexibility of having the flippy screen, but it wasn't enough to stop me from moving from Olympus. I also love shooting with the L-bracket so that 'trumps' the a flippy screen. Hopefully, Small Rig will adjust their L-Bracket design to accommodate this. Cheers, Keith

Good stuff as always! I took the bracket off my own L-bracket for my a7C, so I'm only left with the bottom part of the bracket but at least I can use my screen to its full advantage. One good point that Jason Vong brought up is the ability to use other accessories like straps. I haven't figured out how to use my flip screen with a neck strap yet if that's even possible, so for now I rely on my spare hand strap.

Let’s not get “bent out of shape” over this one, Mike😁! I prefer versatility of tilty type - especially when shooting from the hip, and for being able to position screen toward camera body to protect LCD when not in use. Today’s engineers should be able to design a hybrid - perhaps removeable/repositionable (is that a word?) that communicates w/camera via NFC, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Gotta be a way - consider new “roll-up” screens coming along for smartphones and tablets - screens store scroll-like in edges of frame.

Thanks Bruno! Good question...I have both the A7C and the A7iii. Before getting the A7C I used the A7iii all the time but now I have the C, I use that all the time. I've also gotten used to less dials and buttons and this is not too much of a problem for me. I'm looking forward to the A7iv...I just hope they make enough changes to make it a worthwhile investment. The A1 is a fantastic camera, but that price tag is way too high for me to justify spending that much on just a body. I could get an A7riv and a few lenses for the same price with only a few less options in the camera body. On some of the latest cameras they have both options, like with the a7rV. We are all content creators, whether it be photographs, cinematic master pieces or cat videos... And the industry will always follow the money. In saying that, you could buy a canon 5d mkii which has a fixed screen and it would still produce amazing photographs, if you know how to use it.

@@mikesphotography to be specific when I and many others refer to "content creators" we're talking about people who stand in front of the camera and prefer the articulating screen because they can see themselves. I have the Canon 5DSR it's a great camera but a challenge to get good results when your subject is moving. Disappointingly, Canon's complete lineup has the articulating screen. Rather than submit to the opinions of others and fuel the current camera industry I'm going to stick with the old stuff. The 1DX series and smartphone technology will do.

Flip just for the added protection of the screen. For the rest I dont really care at all. If I really need a display I can use my phone as a secondary.
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 3 года назад
That's a good point...you can flip it over to protect the screen when it's in your bag. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I rarely use my Tilt-Screen on my original A7. I think it always feels fragile. Most of the time i wished it had a tilt screen, shooting low on the ground is a problem with the Tilt-Screen. For Makros and different perspectives this is really annoying. I only use my L Bracket when i know i am shooting on a tripod, otherwise it is detached. And with my 5Diii it is really annoying ^^ taking a low perspective shots sucks, and so does the live view of the 5diii. Therefore FLIPPY SCREEN 👍

Once I heard "Marmite" my brain shut down in horror and I couldn't watch any more. (Oh, and I love the flip screen on my Nikon D5500 so much that I've actually put off upgrading it because the better cameras I can afford - including the D500 - only have a tilt screen. I use it so much I'd rather give up other features and better resolution.)

Hahahahahaha!!! Well I only flashed the image up on screen of the marmite jar for a split second...and like you, I hate the stuff as well!! 😆😆

Hi Mike. I relize this video is over 2 years old. But as you said I love having an L Bracket on all my camera's. The some of the Nikon Z series have the Tilt screen. The Z8 had a 4 way tilt screen. Perfect. But I am using a Z8. Currently using the Z6II with a two way tilt. I have ordered the New Nikon Zf but it has gone to the flippy out screen which I hate for the reasons you mentioned. Did you ever find an L Bracket or a work around for the issue.

I have the m50 and m6markii and I love them both.I really enjoy the full articulating screen on the m50 but I don’t mind the m6 screen either as my tripod will let me do both portrait or landscape with no L bracket.

No it doesn't. The flippy screen started with the A7C, the A7siii and the A7iv.

Do you take photos using the viewfinder or screen?
@mikesphotography
@mikesphotography 2 года назад
It all depends on the environment. When it is really sunny I usually use the viewfinder, when I am shooting from a tripod, I'll use the monitor. 👍

With the a7c I'll mostly use the screen on the back, but with my a7iii I'll use the viewfinder. With the a7c, you can find eye cups to make the viewfinder easier to use. Also if you watch some of my latest videos, you'll see how I shoot as I am doing more on location landscape videos. 😁👍

None of those are perfect. We need the S1H type screen on every pro camera!

That is true. I suppose they are trying to get the thing as small as possible...and the S1H isn't perfect either...that thing is chunky because of the screen. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Some years forward sony is switching from an articulated screen to a tilt screen, the only reason I can imagine is they want the screen to break faster, you can imagine that all day long the screen is brushing and hitting on your chest ... shame that they can be so petty about this
