An innocuous looking device that has appeared in Utah and been used to cause chaos in at least one school is a topic of debate in safety and security.
The Flipper Zero is a digital multi-tool that some have called a pocket sized hacker's toolkit.
Videos of its ability to capture and copy signals you'd expect to be secure have gone viral.

Someone can use that to enter someone's home at night while they are sleeping. Easy way to human traffic sleeping victims or commit r*pe. This is horrible. They could also use it for silent theft. Victims, especially women when hiding from human traffickers and r*pists, might think they are safe inside a building like an office, or an apartment complex gym (they usually have those electronic door locks), and the criminal can open it super fast and get them. This is not okay. Even if they outlaw these, criminals may still have them under the radar. We can't trust any mechanism that can be compromised by this device.

Instead of going after the company making a tool to point out these huge security blunders you should go after the companies for having such bad opsec. Why are government buildings using insecure RFID cards to begin with? Don't blame the messenger, blame the companies that make these horrible systems and market them as secure.

yeah, if a company is selling security systems that any wannabe script kiddie can break into with a device that costs less than a smartphone, they're doing something wrong. i might even go so far as to say that they're ripping off their customers, selling stuff that's useful as security theater and not much else. but that's also kinda the thing with security systems - there are very few security systems that can't be broken into by a sufficiently determined bad actor. security systems usually aren't meant to make unauthorized access totally impossible, just make it difficult, time-consuming, and/or resource-intensive enough to deter people from breaking in. watch a few talks on youtube by professional penetration testers and you'll start to notice the glaring security vulnerabilities pretty much everywhere. there's a plethora of simple and low tech ways to open a locked door without a key, which most doors aren't secured against. a lot of places stay secure because nobody cares enough to break in, not because it'd actually be especially hard to do so. Plus, the flipper zero has been around for years already. the media is fearmongering about it now as if it's a new thing that's gonna have big impacts going forward, but it's already existed for years without making enough of a ripple for the media to take note. and it's a tool for learning about cybersecurity and for tech-related pranks and mischief. it's not particularly useful as a serious hacking tool, since most of the attack vectors it offers are easily defeated by basic security measures - replay attacks are all but useless when rolling codes are involved. plus, if we restrict access to these useful educational tools to only those operating outside the law, all we'll accomplish is hobbling our own defenses against malicious hackers.

As someone passionate about security, devices like these are GOOD for security, not bad! If a $150 device can do all of these things, think of what professional devices can do! Instead of banning devices that point out flaws in security, we should be embracing them and using them to enhance security. Just because you ban something in one country, doesn't mean another country can't get that same device. It's a similar issue to AI. Even if we try and "slow down" the progress of AI here in the US, other nefarious countries/organizations will continue working full steam ahead. In order to stay on top of our vulnerabilities, devices like these are crucial! The very last thing that we want is for all of our infrastructure to be even more insecure than it already is!

@@ryshellso526Linux is just an operating system. Not some a hacking tool. Kali is a Linux distro with security tools but without the knowledge of how to use them is useless. Having access to either isn't going to make someone a security threat. Most actual black hats don't use Kali since it's old and bloated.

It is meant as a pen testing tool, the difference between a whitehat and a blackhat in terms of techniques are not different. The goal is to raise awareness of security flaws by exploiting them in order to help promote change of security and help bring awareness to flaws that need to be patched. This device is good for teaching and learning about vulnerabilities in technology. For genuine researchers, its use is OK. For criminals, random members of the public, and others without good legitimate intent, it's use is a violation of the Wiretap Act and its possession and use should be just as punishable as any other act of wiretapping.

@@Gertbfrobe407 , Read the Federal Wiretap Act and later acts that add to its prohibitions on private surveillance of all kinds. It is illegal in all 50 states and most countries for any private entity to listen to or record a conversation that they are not a party to without the consent of at least one party in the conversation. This device enables the modern equivalent of wiretapping by remote means, which is also a violation of the wiretapping act. So, no I am not crazy to believe that people without legitimate research interests to improve security should have no right to use this or any other means to listen to any conversation of any kind without permission of at least one person in the conversation.

Practically though you've got to be pretty close to the garage door to get a clean capture. You have to be waiting there for a long time. Plus what freq is it on? You have to scan and what if they press the button when the receiver isn't on that freq in the scan, you miss it. For the most part though, its a nuisance device.
