Seriously. This guy reminds me of my grandpa, but a way younger version obviously lol. He used to do this back in the 60’s when he had a body shop. He would take the worst cars nobody thought could be fixed, and would buy them and fix them. He didn’t shy away from anything. He would graft new roofs onto rollovers, and new back half’s onto really bad rear ended cars. And he was a perfectionist. He did everything right. A lot of his personal cars were wrecks that he fixed, or flood jobs that he dried out. He built my grandma a beautiful Karman Ghia out of a rollover, and within a few weeks she wrecked it again lol. And they still argue about it 40 years later lol. He always taught me “don’t worry about messing up. There’s nothing you can mess up that we can’t fix.” And he wasn’t wrong. Mechanical or body wise. He never gave up on anything, and we always found a way to fix it with whatever tools we had. It’s cool to see people still doing this now, in this new world where everything is disposable.

Zach, when you weld a long thin seam, weld 2 inches, use a wet rag and cool it down, space 5 inches then weld 2 inches, cool with rag then go back, weld the middle between the welds, cool with a rag and keep going, takes longer but less warping. On a long thicker quarter panel weld 6 inches, space 6 cool with wet rag and weld 6, space and repeat.
@BIGWIGGLE223
@BIGWIGGLE223 4 месяца назад
Just what I was saying. I don't know if I'd go 2 inches on that razor thin steel though. Maybe not much more than a 1/4 inch, but with the wet rag technique you can move back and forth a whole lot faster.

The best way on the tin foil modern cars are made is alot of little (sub 1/2 inch) welds, spaced 3 or 4 inches apart slowly filling the areas in only after the metal is cold to the touch

Should be a warning to those of you who've purchased a car with a "clean" title and sometimes a "clean" car fax. To be honest the easiest way to see if any major repairs have been done is to take a car to CarMax - they usually can find just about every repair/repaint on a car... I know Zach would disclose but in some places they may only say that this had "minor damage"....

Few things to note 1. Should have removed the 12v battery and the hybrid battery before welding 2. per toyota (and every manufacturer) you cant reuse a folded seam panel which that quarter is (wheel arch is crimped over the inner structure) 3. You arent allowed to splice or reuse the HSS inner structure 4. He cut the stucture of the inner rocker, this is also HSS, and needed to be replaced If anyone is doing this to your car (looking at you geico, progressive, and farmers) dont let them touch your car, it is unsafe and illegal, car must be returned to pre accident condition which means used weld on panels are not allowed

These RU-vid rebuilders are eventually going to get someone killed. This guy has no idea how dangerous this repair could be in a subsequent collision. His only concern is that the exterior panels line up.... I hope no one ever needs to rely on that LR seat belt. It was bad enough with guys like samcrac rebuilding cars for himself and theoretically only putting himself and his family in danger, but this guy is straight up saying he's rebuilding it to sell to someone for a profit and he's proud that he somehow got it with a clean title!!

Ah the "clean carfax" junk ... It was totaled before and is still... totaled .. a complete loss... If you want something cheap and unsafe to putz around in .. no worries... but this car is still a total loss because all the work is STRICTLY cosmetic not structural. Just fyi any hybrid’s value is based on battery age. Unless the buyer is an idiot. I flipped an undamaged Prius after rebuilding the hybrid battery. Still only sold it for $5500 in Central Florida. Best of luck to you though. Your $11000 is an estimate without a damaged/totaled/salvage vehicle. Again you may get lucky with an idiot buyer, but most wouldn’t pay more than 50% KBB if the car has frame damage or salvage history.

Auto damage adjuster reporting in. If you are able to do body pulls and weld in body panels yourself, you pretty much open the door to being able to flip any car that isn't burned to the ground. You're looking at a minimum of 18 hours of mechanical time for a quarter panel like this one needs. In my area, that is $3,200 in labor alone. With the part cost, that singular repair eats all your profit. But, if you can do body pulls and panel welding, then you have a world of possibility open to you and damn near anything will bring in a few thousand dollars in profit.

You can smash the end of the seam sealer. Make it flat. Then cut it off only leaving about 1 1/2 inches left. Then when you apply it. Constant pressure. Then pause every 1/8 inch. You can use a old raptor liner kit and buy rubber undercoating for 35 a gallon.

for welding warp you can counter that with a piece of copper just like a heat sink in your computer

Easy on the seam sealer. Try to make it look factory. Nothing screams rebuilder like seam sealer smeared everywhere.

Good thing we arent in Europe but this is how cars are repaired in body shops as well. More sturdy than the factory😂😂

@@warriorplutotrent3827 good thing that it is illegal in Europe, because we wont need to deal with cars "repaired" like this one.

@@_r4x4 it may be illegal but I assure you that's it's still being done lol i just seen another video from a guy in Europe that did this exact thing. You can't monitor everyone especially if it's a smaller shop or someone's house lol

it's extreme hard to sell a salvage car and that car for $11000 unless it has a very very low mileage.

great work as usual, I really liked watching this. Just one tiny nitpick... I would have loved to see you put some weld through primer on that support piece inside the c-pillar, because untreated double layered metal like that has a tendency to rust.

No one had the tools to begin with. I started with nothing and spent the last 20yrs building my tool collection to do this kinda work so basically every job I do I keep a little profit for myself and the rest is reinvested into new tools to make it more efficient or easier. I started with a hammer grinder and anvil to make my own handmade repair panels from scratch, so if aomeone is determined it can be done.

all these rebuilders always say it looks good just needs a little bit of adjusting but when you look later the lines look the same they couldt get it better.. they hurry way too much to finish so they dont properly finish the steps of pulling etc. not saying he wont finish it but it always bothers me because you can see it in the end results

First things first: you did a great job and you know what you are doing. 👍 But how do you sell this car? As good as new with low mileage?
@staygreat3611
@staygreat3611 3 месяца назад
Buying wrecked to resell might seem like a steal but title issues will lock it to the original owner, hardware failure issues will give you headaches, and stolen reports or parts will get you a callback.
