In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew performs field testing with the FLIR Duo camera, announced at CES 2017 in Las Vegas. The Duo has been developed specifically for use on drones, and combines a visible light camera and a thermal imaging camera in a single unit the size and shape of a GoPro Hero sports camera - making it compatible with a wide range of gimbals and aircraft that are already available in the market. It incorporates a Lepton thermal imaging sensor with a resolution of 160x120 pixels, and the visible light camera records HD video. The crew demonstrates how to use the FLIR SUAS app, available for both Android and iOS devices, to change between the three available color palettes - WhiteHot, HotMetal and Rainbow - and three display options: thermal, visible and picture-in-picture. The demonstration also provides a look at the implementation of FLIR's MSX technology on the Duo. When MSX is enabled, the Duo runs an edge-detection algorithm on the visible light image and then superimposes those edges onto the thermal image, enhancing the user's ability to identify subjects, in spite of the Lepton's low-resolution sensor. The episode concludes with a sample application: a low-altitude roof inspection.

The flir vue 336 can be found used for about 1,500 occasionally on eBay, that’s still 50% more expensive but the quality is well worth it! Currently saving for a vue 640!

Hey, Jim! Well, it's an honor to have you visit our channel... I hope you're feeling better, and we'll see you at the next show! Anyway, the Duo is available now on FLIR's own website (www.flir.com/suas/duo/) and through their distribution partners. The price is $999 for the standard version and $1,299 for the radiometric version. All of the specs are available on that site, as well, but you've basically got an HD visible light camera mounted alongside a FLIR Lepton: a 160x120 pixel thermal sensor in a GoPro compatible form factor that also accepts two PWM inputs to control camera functions. And, yes, at least one drone manufacturer is already working to integrate the Duo fully into their system: Autel Robotics, which is planning to release the fruits of their efforts in Q1 this year. Here is a link to the announcement on their site: www.autelrobotics.com/flir-duo/

Out of curiosity, would you be interested in selling your old Flir Duo? They are discontinued but they are still the only affordable option for me. Several sites have them listed for sale, but none of them have them in stock.

Hi, can the Duo and Go pro gimbal attach to a phantom 3 pro..?
@Texfire

Seems like a package that would have been better integrated into an existing platform like Yuneec or DJI's quadcopters as a FLIR integrated package, with the additional functions mapped to the controller and video feeds. For someone who is savy enough to retrofit one of these on a self-built or pre existing platform, the resolution for the FLIR sensor it's really not very useful for non-hobby applications. The only exception to my reservations is the picture in picture option, though I'd like to see the ability to toggle which sensor is PIP with a transmitter.
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
As you can see in the video, it plugs right into gimbals that are designed to carry the GoPro Hero3 or Hero4, and it uses the same USB connector to get power in and video out, just like the GoPro -- so base-level integration is pretty straightforward. If you can mount a GoPro on a gimbal, you can mount a Duo on a gimbal. Also, I checked, and you can set up the display options (visible, IR, picture-in-picture) on a PWM channel and control it using a switch on your radio.

Hi, I have purchased the FLIR duo and due to FLIR's sales team I also purchased the phantom 3 advanced and the H4-3D which as far as i can see is NOT compatible..!! So I will have to sell the phantom 3 Adv and now buy a Phantom 2. I just need to get this working for a client of mine so can you send me if possible the exact set up you have there, phantom model, gimble, video transmitter...every little piece i will need. THANK YOU in advance for all your help and great vids keep um up..!!

Do you have any details of acquiring the video signal into the DJI app if converting a P3Pro for example?
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
Short answer: no, I do not have any information regarding that possibly... Slightly longer answer: the Duo is compatible with most gimbals that work with GoPro Hero3 and Hero4. So, my question to you is: can you get a GoPro gimbal for the P3P? If so, then you should (theoretically) be able to tie the Duo directly into your drone and, therefore, the DJI GO app.

I'm glad you found it to be a useful review! As to my own behavior at 3:02, I can tell you for sure that I was *not* standing on a trampoline. As to why I was bobbing up and down, my best guess is that I was trying to keep warm -- it was bitter cold out there (at least by Oregon standards)!

What mission profiles would be assigned to the FLIR Duo? You cant even use it to hunt wild hogs at night with the thing its resolution is just too low, seems to me.
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
I've never hunted wild hogs, especially at night using a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera -- which would actually be a felony in Oregon. So, take what I'm about to say as it pertains to hunting with a grain of salt... That said, the Duo and its low-resolution Lepton sensor are not especially good at identifying individual point sources (like a missing person during a search and rescue mission or, I imagine, a wild hog) -- that's where the Vue excels. If you watched to the end of the video, you saw a demonstration of a roof inspection. I think jobs like that are the appropriate mission profile for the Duo: low altitude above the subject, seeking effects over an area, rather than a single point source.
@davefolts1566
@davefolts1566 7 лет назад
Too bad about the laws in Oregon..y'all ever going to be allowed by the nanny state to pump your own gas? I'd use the IR camera to spot heat signature, the purpose of the thermal IR band anyway. Spotting hogs in brush would be something folk would pay for in Texas, where we have a real problem with the beasts. Think it'd be a mission for the FLIR Vue, (or Boson for that matter).

g mihalic you can fit a Vue 336 or Vue 640 inside of a GoPro gimbal with a little padding +Velcro or a 3d printer to make an insert, haven’t figured out the live feed yet but that’s how you can stabilize it easily :) the one shown in this video actually perfectly fits a GoPro gimbal 👍🏻 still trying to figure out how to get the video to feed through your drone the way it would if you used a regular camera

@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
Thanks, Taz! There is no doubt that this is not a universal thermal imaging solution for drones -- but it will clearly have applications in some industries, such as building inspection. I also cannot help but think that the radiometric version (not covered in this video) could be very useful where you're not trying to capture an image so much as determine the temperature of a particular part or component during an inspection. But, yeah, for a task like search and rescue or the firefighting work that we do, I'm a Vue guy, all the way...

Thanks for the test! A great review again! I will pass on this sensor, we are using it to look for groundwater springs, so we need a IR with discrete imaging capability. Looking to the Vue. Any other IR cameras you suggest? Thanks William
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
Thanks -- glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I think you're picking up on the take-away message here, which is that the Duo is not a universal thermal imaging solution for drones. It is well suited for specific missions and less expensive than some of the alternatives, but it's not appropriate for every mission. Regarding other sensors you might look at, I'd say it depends on your time frame. FLIR names all of their detectors after sub-atomic particles. The camera core at the heart of the Vue is the Tau and the Duo is based around the Lepton sensor. Right now, FLIR is putting the finishing touches on the Boson camera core which is supposed to have some really striking new capabilities that will put it in a class by itself... So, if you can wait, it might be worthwhile to find out what the Boson brings to the table. However, as you've seen in many of our previous videos, the Vue is certainly a very capable camera.
@geochange
@geochange 7 лет назад
Thank you so much for the information ***** ! I am now focused on multispectral and will be adding IR in the next year, so I can wait for the Boson. I am really intrigued by your videos and will keep watching. thanks again! Look forward to more innovations! William

Its a great idea but at almost $1000 you can do better. When you consider the Flir One is a quarter of the price and uses the same low resolution sensor i think Flir have priced them self out of the market. I cant imagine these will fly off the shelves?
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
That's a good point -- especially since the new FLIR One (also released here at the show) -- sells for $199, incorporates both a thermal camera and a visible light camera, as well as MSX technology. One wonders if a person smarter than me was to hack that interface that plugs into the phone and make it output analog video, would you have a (much) less expensive version of the Duo? I honestly don't know the answer... On the other hand, I talked to a friend at FLIR who told me that they started getting sales from nearly the moment the site went live -- so there are clearly people who see the value in it. As to flying off the shelves? I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

I have an incessant generator humming (that I can't pinpoint) from a neighbor that is guerrilla farming probably - because no one burns 2 litres of fuel an hour when the mains is also available. I need to locate it in order to shut up the horrible low hum - this is the perfect solution for finding a hot exhaust and maybe the source. Even in the lonely bush, people have a way of selfishly gettin their lives all up in other people's pants.

As it happens, I'm in Las Vegas for CES, and I just stopped by the GoPro booth yesterday. A video will be forthcoming on our channel, but they do intend to re-release the Karma (with a specific release date to be announced in February). Also, right now the Karma is only compatible with the Hero5. However, they did indicate they are working on an adapter/harness which would allow the Karma to work with Hero3 and Hero4 cameras -- which should make it (theoretically) compatible with the Duo. I think we'll have to wait until the hardware is available to know for sure.
