The concepts seem directed towards students, young people, and people with a lack of money. Therefore, there's also the advertisement of being "Green". (Well, colour lakes are never Green.) So on Friday, students travel home from their universities and trains are full with this price. Air is humid and indeed terrible in summer, but take your own mini fan with you (e.g. USB or battery powered) and enough drinking water, then it's better. I don't travel with flix bus, but I do travel with cheap train companies such as flix train. I'm old enough to have been used to that old kind of waggons - we didn't die in them 🙂 -, so I don't mind the lack of more recent "comfort" - I don't need it. 🙂
Suggestion: Try out Thalys... There is a direct connection between Düsseldorf and Paris :) It takes just four hours and the tickets are very affordable (not super cheap, but as expensive as ICE for example)
Long time ago i was traveling with the group of our Students from Wroclaw to Leipzig for the Students University exchange and it was during the DDR and the train was traveling in ditch so there was no view at all ; it was so disappointing . But I liked to travel and later enjoyed the beautiful Thuringia .Cheers!
Same. I live 66km away. wich is alomost 2x of Düsseldorf to cologne. If they pay 6€ for both ways (going there, going back home) its super cheap wich would mean I should be able to go to Düsseldorf for 12€, but in reality, I just checked priced and the cheapest option for me is 30€ at the moment (the so-called "24 Stunden Ticket" wich allows you to ride every public transport in the said area for 24 hours so let's say you go by train to your destination but still can use let's say the bus or subway and tram in the city you go to till the 24 hours are over, but sounds pricy if you just use let's say the train only)
Phil, just 2 days ago they announced the extension of their network (3 new lines, from 19 May, 2 June, 23 June respectively). Needless to point out that no "BahnBonus points" can be earned with Flixtrain, and no "BahnCard"-rebate applies either... Would be wonderful if there were high speed rail / "ICE"-competitors like in Spain & Italy!
What I also just love about FlixTrain is that they are at least trying to scratch at the monopoly that DB has over the tracks here. Thanks for the video!
They just rent them. Like cheap mobile phone provider (Aldi/Ja/Congstar) all rent from t-mobile/vodafone and o2. A better example for real DB competition would be GoAhead in Baden-Württemberg. They really purchased the whole tracks and put new trains on there ;)
@@Singurarity88You can’t compare long-distance trains and regional trains. Long-distance trains need to make profit for the operator, because it isn‘t financed by the government, so Flixtrain „steals“ some passengers of DB, and that‘s why I‘d see it as the biggest competitor. Regional traffic is financed by the government, so no company makes money with it, and it decides which operator runs on which lines. In Baden-Württemberg, there are many other operators, such as SWEG, or mentioned by you: GoAhead. But I don‘t think they purchased tracks, as like 98% of Tracks in Germany are owned by DB Netz.
I also appreciate competition to legacy monopolists. However, to achieve anything, they should be cheap and cheerful, not awful. Despite occasional superficial refurbishments, their trainsets are clapped out, prone to defects (toilets, doors, sometimes they break down or require ad-hoc repairs that upset the schedule) and getting very noisy at high speeds. Why can't we have Lumo in Germany?
I was really impressed by the trains when I was in Germany in 2017. The only issue we ever had was a last minute track change in Frankfurt so we missed our connection. The DB staff were super helpful and got us on another train that got into our final destination just a little later than our original train.
My mum lives in Cologne and I live in Berlin. I love to take the Flixtrain because it's a cheap and convenient way to get around. They have tickets from 10€ if you book fast enough for this distance.
Great information. Ty for that. I moved to the US in 2009 so wasn't aware that Flixtrain is now a thing. I knew of the Flix buses. Great cheap alternative.
misschien komt dat bij ons ook nog. flixbussen zijn er nog maar sinds redelijk recent, dus groene energie zal steevast komen. en voor die prijs ! airco hebben we zowiezo toch al niet 😂
We used Flixtrain somewhere around the time when they started, back then they had only that one connection which was from Düsseldorf to Hamburg. Our impression was quite positive, we had much more space inside, it felt like an improved S-Bahn with luggage storage inbetween the seats and they even had food service, you were able to order small snacks to your seats if you wanted (which we didn't try). It ran quite smooth and was not very loud, I cannot remember neither the running time nor the price anymore, but all in all it was all very positive. I later heard that they were struggling because their expenses were too high. Seeing you taking one of their trains today and that it's running the short distance from Düsseldorf to Cologne actually makes me quite happy to see that they survived. I realize that they had to cut down almost all of the comforts in order to keep the low price which is probably that one thing that people found most attractive. And it's also great that they extended the offers where to go to. I might check them out again soon, so thanks for the video, guys.
I agree and just like Deana&Phil said perfect for short trips. My hubby and I are going to Rügen for vacation this year but will be going first class on that eight hour journey 😄
I hadn't heard of their trains. I ride Flix bus at least once every time I'm in Europe (I'm from California) and just took one from Lake Bled, Slovenia to Ljubliana, Croatia that was fantastic. Not only inexpensive but a new bus, very comfortable and smooth.
My daughter use to live in Dortmund, then moved to Duessdorf, when we visited and wanted to do a day trip around, it was so expensive to go by train from Dort one to either cologne or Duessdorf, we ended up taking ride share, so much cheaper, I am glad there are cheaper options for the trains now and would certainly take the Felix train, though I might ha e a melt down with my hormones if it was hot in those carriages 🤣🤣🤣😬😬😬
Being older, I would probably use the DB trains but great value there if you’re on a budget. My favourite German train is the Waldbahn which has beautiful trips thru the Bayrische Wald, my spiritual homeland.
Suggestion: Try out Thalys... There is a direct connection between Düsseldorf and Paris :) It takes just four hours and the tickets are very affordable (not super cheap, but as expensive as ICE for example)
Even the word haupt means main, proper translation of Hauptbahnhof to English id central station and Gleis is track or platform. My nickname for this train is Schrotflix. They operate old East German rolling stock.😜
@@holger_p I made mistake. Former DR carriages are still used at DB Intercity and Eurocity trains. These are DB UIC-X-Wagen. They were produced from 1952 to the late sixties. The lifetime of railway carriages is more than 50 years.
Very nice I love take the train in Germany happend before my husband and I toke regular train from the Frankfurt airport until Karlsruhe and there was people in are reserved sit we just stay started until other sit was available
The price is interesting and certainly sufficient for short journeys. But I wouldn't want to spend 10 hours in such a train, especially without air conditioning. :D
I have the Deutschlandticket and need a connection from Kiel to Köln. Reaching Hamburg is no problem, but Hamburg-Cologne is either too slow or too expensive (ICE). Flixtrain wants under €30 for two passengers, including seat reservation, for the direct train. I’m in my 50s and old trains will be like reliving my youth 🙂.
For less than $5 USD that is a great deal. Not surprised that there were no A/C nor food/snack bar to minimize expenses. At least Flixtrain allows people to bring own food/drink on. AND luggage. We noticed a Flixbus on the US road because of this video. Thank you - will check them out.
But now with the 49€ ticket I feel like it DB is cutting down more demand from FlixTrain. Yes, RE/RB trains are slower but very cheap because of the 49€ ticket.
Please visit Poland? it is so close to you and cheap; ask for the spciality: ruskie pierogi my favourite perogies from my childhood in every cheap restaurant called 'Bar Mleczny' (milk bar translation; Go to Wroclaw aka Breslau? Cheers from Toronto! today is 36 C as the first heat wave of the 'Summer' in Spring. Thank you !
Budget travelers fall for the very cheap fare!!! Travelled from Zurich to Frankfurt @20 euros, no need to compare with train fare! Bus maintenance was more than sufficient with a toilet facility!
thats only for local transportation... of course you can use as many local bus and trains to the next local zone and travel around germany that way, but that will take time. The special 9 Euro ticket is not valid for remote connections. Like Munich / Hamburg or Köln / Berlin. Only short connections.. then you have to jump on the Next Train...
@@000jimbojones000 thank you so much for your reply!! 😊 quick question if I want to be abke to travel within the Rhein Main giebt can I use that ticket or do I have to purchase a weekly/monthly ticket?
2:23 If you have a reserved seat why didn't you check in which platform section your car is going to stop? I think it's kinda rude to move through a packed train like this when you just could have boarded the correct car from the platform.
Not exactly. German trains are notorious for beeing late, at least compared to other Europan countries. The punctuality quota for long distance trains is at about 70 % in Germany (meaning 30 % of the trains are late), while the same quota in Spain is up to 99 % for some connections.
Sorry. seeing people in masks gives me the hives. Luckily I live in a country where they were scrapped a long time ago, and NOT wearing them was simply saying NO. People really need to acknowledge more that wearing these horrible things leads to physical and mental illness. especially distressing children and harming the development in children. I just read another article today how harmful they are to children, their mental development has been set back by 2 years, especially their speech, their ability to socialise and feel comfortable and interact with strangers, and even their IQ on average 20points lower than would have been a few years ago. The learning children do in the first 3 years of their lives, they can never catch up on that. We have bred a generation of people who will be less able to function.
Deaths with COVID-19 on the death certificate as of today, in comparison: USA (330 million residents): 1 million (1,000,000 !) UK (66 million residents): 193,000 Germany (84 million residents): 137,000 I'm German, and I love *living* (as opposed to *dying*) in Germany, btw...
@@OchNe926 problem with your stats is most deaths are counted as ‘of the virus’ when in actuality, they could have had it and recovered or had a false positive. And many hospitals had incentive to build up false numbers
@@silkedavid8876 Being long term together in small rooms, is by far the highest risk of exposure. Therefore it's understandable to drop masks there last. And It's also the last spot, where they are mandatory. For shopping or theaters it was dropped about a month ago. April 2022. It's discomfort not tyranny. Death penalty counts more than comfort.
