I'm so glad an accomplished musician is proud to rep for FL Studio. Whenever I talk production with casuals and pros alike, the conversation always takes the "bro you need to try Ableton" route smh they seem to believe FL can only operate Sytrus and stock legacy drums lol
I was working on Kinect integration at the time and when Kinect died as an independent thing and nothing really replaced it, coupled with the costs of AL, I kind of put the live integration thing in the back of my mind until, well, now. Seems it's time to refresh my view of the DAW landscape again. I'm not quite set up to receive that component in my toolchains yet but when I get there, it's great content like Benn and others that will make my first guess a pretty high confidence of being my best guess (until I learn more, but that requires hands on and time invested).
Image-Line has always outsold everybody else, by quite a margin. FL Studio is by far the most common DAW platform on the market and has been for a decade.
I've said it before I'll say it again. The best DAW for you is the one you learn first because the one you know is the one with the least barriers in the way of making music.
Yep...I KNOW there are "better" DAWS, and I've tried them and I simply can not make music in them. 😊 And when I get hit with inspiration, I need to be able to get shit going and so I end up falling back on FL. And now I can do everything I need in FL, and very fast, so no need to move to another DAW.
I switched after 8 years from FL to ableton and I feel there is is a substantial improvement in ableton from a workflow standpoint that yields more creative results. I think having a solid foundational understanding is important but the way a program operates creates different results.
Majority of the time, probably yes. But some cases, like me, learnt differently. I started with Ableton then went to logic and then went to FL and found FL to be easiest and it wasn't my first. Edit: And I spent quite a while with each DAW so I know how they work since I had to learn them.
Really really love your content. But I would really love some production streams. Just you working in FL, your workflow sound design etc. I could watch hours and hours of that. I really respect and appreciate your musicianship. Thanks for everything Benn
I really want this in a 49 or 61... kind of disappointed this is the highest it goes... Part.of me wanted a 61 but I ended up deciding on 49. I always wanted something w better fl integration though and everone says the quality/keybed are on par with the main competitors in this range so I ended up going with this....but I can't be as happy about it as I want 😂. Hopefully they do it soon and I can trade up.
That is such a cool keyboard - and probably the best demonstration and presentation of any DAW controller on RU-vid ever. I am doing mostly dawless stuff these days, but if I ever get back to working more in the box, it certainly is a potential incentive to swapping to FL Studio knowing that something like this will be available.
Lol i was gonna say, this dude like almost perfectly covers all the features and explains how to use them in a very short concise way. Definitely saving this video as a tutorial for when I buy this in a couple weeks.
Yessssssss! As an FL Studio user, I've been struggling to find the right midi controller. So many of the great midi controllers out there are built for every DAW under the sun except for FL. Novation take my moneyyyy......! (P.S. If you make one with premium bits, polyphonic aftertouch, etc, you can have more of my money, so uh.... do that, please.) I didn't know about scripting interfaces for any midi controller though, that sounds awesome, thanks for mentioning that! I will toss it out there that my only other gripe with FL Studio is recording. It's super easy to let your project get messy and out of control when recording multiple takes. I don't know how much better (or worse) other DAWs handle that workflow, but other than that, FL Studio is great for me!
100K Subs! Congratulations! I only found your channel a few months back but have really been enjoying your videos. Excellent pace, videography, and great presentation style too! Here's to the next 100K 🥂
My guess as to why it's cheap is, Novation took two of their Launchkey mk3 midi controllers, (which were designed for Ablleton Live), recolor it to slate gray, and give them firmware for FL, so all they were paying for is the software modifications and a different color plastic; the hard parts, (design and machining), have already been done. :)
Yep. They also just were glad to get something going on the FL platform, as they have tried to make a deal with FL for years, and I guess could not. Image line tends to move at their own leisure, to put it nicely.
doesn’t make sense. the mk3 would have been much more expensive at launch. also, no, the parts have not been machined, just designed, what they have is the assembly and machining figured out. they dont just have thousands of parts laying around waiting.
first name The manufacturer would still have to machine the molds for the controllers, so using an established mold cuts the production cost down as it was already paid for.
Your knowledge about FL Studio is insane. I knew FL is complex, but after watching your videos i am convinced you can do whatever is possible in a DAW with FL
Just subbed to you because I never see people taking FL Seriously and you're the first "real" pro that does actually give it the spotlight it deserves.
I've been using FL a while now but I'm finally at the point of growing my system to more than a 2 channel interface and a usb midi controller to a real 19" rack mount one, more midi, adat, etc. But I'm totally lost in how to maneuver all of this in FL. It may not be the most flashy video, but seeing how an FL power user power uses FL as far as routing and templates go, that would be incredibly informational!
I'm super happy to see your headless setup! I've been struggling to put in time with Ableton in general but seeing the potential I left on the floor with my LaunchKey 37 should open tons of new material to play with!
I just wanted to say, I'm not a musician and originally came here for the science videos you have done. Now I'm working my way through your discography, and very much enjoying it, and working my way through your videos. I really appreciate everything you do as a creator, and just wanted you to know that.
If you put 'Turorial' in the title it would have million views. Finally a true video tutorial for Flkeys that actually is a tutorial that shows the work and not just points the functions and feel of the knobs and keys...
I think this completes FL. you make it look easy, but still at 200 it won't hurt too much for me to give it a run. thanks for the vid because I gave up looking for a good controller and never would have found this.
This is somewhat unrelated to the video but I'm extremely happy to find someone who has one of their projects built into FL making RU-vid content as well as being active. Most of the other guys from the mid 2000s - 2010s I've looked into have completely disappeared.
Man i wished you were there when the Akai Fire released, i held off on getting one for years but ended up buying one last fall, only for this to come out 6 months later. I don't regret my purchase but I wish more people sat down with the Fire as you did here, the few videos out there don't do much
And on my wish list! I do hope they come up with a larger version as well but this is a good start. 37 keys is better than 25 keys. Love it thanks to your demonstration
I had watched some of your other videos (mainly from the Zoia) and had no idea you were The Flashbulb. Arboreal is still in my top 10 electronic albums of all time. I have also been using FL Studio since Fruityloops in '99 or '00 and while I love the program, the midi controller compatibility has been a thorn in my side for so long.
I always loved fl studio using it as a sequencer with samples Loved that you could link anything to the controller just by right clicking Had a korg nanokontrol and with a number pad it was just perfect
Been wanting to message you and tell you about this for months, so glad we got you to review one. This channel is still the only reason I take FL Studio seriously every time I QA our interfaces with it
... actually I wish an experienced FL user like you would make a video about FL Studio. Not a series, not a 'this is what a DAW is' - just a simple video for people who know their way around a DAW, that explains the underlying paradigms - how patterns relate to tracks, and to the channel rack. There's something that just won't click for me
Using the Akai Fire, you can do a ton of production without touching your mouse but yeah, that’s a fair point they would be back tracking in some ways if they prioritize midi over keyboard/mouse
I'm a Power User for Studio One, however I bought FL Producer to learn how to use it, and it's been just sitting there because I'm so use to using my boards with certain DAWS. I have the NI S-49 for Kontakt and NI Instruments, and My Akai MK249 to use with my MPC X, and I came across this video for FL and this board makes it way easier to learn and use FL. Thanks, because I was feeling like I wasted money buying FL because it's not comfortable learning something new but it's too many expansions and templates and etc available not to use FL. Thanks. And by the way, I saw your review on the Akai MPC61, and mine was on back order and when I saw your video and why I really didn't want to buy it, I went and changed my order to the MPC-X. You got a sub from me. I appreciate the channel. You have to stay innovative and relevant as a professional producer or you can't evolve. I paused this video and bought this board. LOL..with free shipping and no tax. LOL
I used FruityLoops back inte day and liked it. I have also tried out FL-studio for a while now that I'm more experienced and have a better understanding of what I want to do and how I want to work. It didn't quite gel with me. Not the worst DAW and the included synths and FX are pretty good. I use Reaper now and it just clicks with me. I like it a lot. Not everyone works in the same way though so whatever DAW any of you people use, I hope it works great for you and that you're making the music you want to make with it.
i LOVE the idea of a headless fl studio. wish the screen on the piano was MUCH larger and more beautiful. so it will mirror the browser, for browsing samples. and a seperate thin strip to mirror mixer perhaps
I just stumbled on your video about Uli B and the tribe and now have come to like your videos, your articulate and so fare consistent in your spoken positions on various subjects. I don't subscribe to any ch, or ill say I rarely subscribe with any intent of returning, But you have my returning ear. Good job man, I'm going to binge on your videos while I check out FLS as I've been an AVID HD PT user since the farm card days and so you know the kind of cash outlay I have been through over the years, and I have had it up to my wallets neck with AVIDS crazy licensing structures and insane pricing and even more insane support system. So we have shed ourselves of all AVID hardware AFTER THIS LAST MOVE TOI A FULL-ON SUBSCRIPTION BASED system, I personally believe it will spell the beginning of the end of this once monopolizing company. So my reaction was to stop giving them any more of my money, and I want to stop so badly, But I need a relatively smooth transition to the next DAW, I know there will be a learning curve, no biggy, But as far as features and edit tools and one thing that comes to mind is the engine on the HDX cards, there is a tangible effect here where it's not all just software, so I'm concerned about how that will play out with the absence of the cards. IO do know this ill have gained some PCIe slots, what would be just perfect if a software company would figure out how to utilize AVIDS hardware benefits inside their own software, OH man I could keep my card and dump PT and say so long AVID, like they would even care. they could give two shits about me being a loyal customer for over 25 years since day One . And I have been a willing participant to myself being extorted in some ways with my playing along with the crazy cost points of the hardware-software $ it has felt like in software updates and version updates especially, it's been a constant thorn in my side that has become more irritated in the last 5 years. So I have shed myself thus fare of the two C24s then Live desk or controller, and various other hardware items, some extra HD I/O's SYNC, MIDI interface etc.. all gone and I'm now down to just the software 2021 version, that I still hold a perpetual Licence for stemming all the way back to version 3.1, still hold and use three S1's and a DOCK that's it. I have been looking for something I can realistically move to and at some point dump AVID 100%, And it's a difficult step as I have clients and overlapping productions that is or are moving between my room and other rooms fitted with PT. I'm an old analog guy so for tactile reasons I need faders, and pan knobs in front of me when mixing. so I know that there are finally a host of other controllers out there that I can only suspect will interface with FLS, If they do cakewalk or DP or Studio One or AVID even, I've never given FLS a serious consideration having somehow lumped it in the same boat as REAPER for instance, Perhaps unfairly and so I will start with an open mind to FLS starting today, for some reason, years ago I had done this and not looked back, but after seeing your video I'm downloading now and will give it some real-world consideration. So anyways Hello Benn, I'll be around and commenting. thanks for the time it takes you to script your content to research and think it through, all the production and behind-the-scenes work does not go unnoticed brother. JTH Seattle
Jorden i`m with you . I`m an Fl Studio user for a long time. And I don`t use another DAW.I`m very happy that there is an controler for FlStudio now. I hope I get my soon.
It looks like a similar build to the Nectar Impact, which is super solid. Huge fan of the scale feature and mapping, as well. I think I am officially talked into it...going to upgrade to Signature Edition and really dig into this DAW again.
tempted to get the Key37. I already got the 25 key but I didn't realize that my desk is somewhat big. I just hate returning stuff and the 25 key really is all I need. It would just be nice to have the full sized keys and maybe the chord mode. I do love this little thing so far.
I'm extremely happy that Image Line and hardware makers are slowly starting to produce things that integrate better with FL, but can we have something more than a tiny controller, and god forbid can we have Aftertouch. Why not bring some well needed integration to the SL MkIII, Novation's flagship controller? I was just about to buy one until I started realizing the headache I would have to deal with getting it to work half decently with FL. Don't get me wrong, I like the portable form factor for it's utility and I think it's a very attractive piece of kit.
I've had nothing but hell getting aftertouch working with FL lol. Never had any luck getting either of my controllers working with it sadly, and I'm not about to start learning python just for that lmao
@@kishinslayer2228 Right?! There was a setting somewhere to enable it, the same way the pitch bend and mod wheels do not work automatically (WHYYYYYYY?) and have to be assigned. You can do the auto link to aftertouch, but you have to have the key depressed and held down first and then apply aftertouch pressure after you link it. Otherwise it just links the individual key to whatever knob you've mapped it to. It's also irritating because when you do map it, it's always the full 128 level range making it almost useless for assigning to a filter. No pressure, sends a zero value. There's a way to limit the range using an automation clip that I haven't tried, but what a pain. If you have poly aftertouch, forget it. It treats it all as channel aftertouch and it freaks out if more than one key of pressure is triggered. Meanwhile all the other popular DAWs are now supporting MPE.
@@alteredworks i used to have an m-audio oxygen pro 25, the thing worked flawlessly with ableton but _i_ don't work flawlessly with ableton, and when i set it up with FL i spent the next 4 months hunting why literally nothing worked the way it was supposed to instead of actually producing anything. Eventually i got another controller that's on the magic list of FL-compatible devices and it worked infinitely better but to this day i cannot get the wheels working right lmao
@@kishinslayer2228 It's bizarre that my controller and all my hardware synths communicate perfectly fine with each other, but in FL it's some sort of enigma. I can go to the Current Project> Remote Control> Omni Channel Pitch and set it there and then it behaves as it should, but why on earth should I ever have to do this? I literally just ordered and KeyLab MkII that should be here Monday and I know I'm going to have some fighting with it. Thankfully some folks have already written scrips for it, something that I really don't have the time or care to do either. FL would be so much better if we could have expressive control out the box.
I just don’t understand why it has taken image line so long to come up with a dedicated controller similar to how ableton has the push , Native instruments has machine controller and Akai has for the Mpc controllers with Mpc software. Is it that difficult for them to do or is it that the don’t want to come up with that type of Controller. As an Fl studio user it would be amazing
i always get asked on which daw people should get... and its like... not really an answer I can give, I can suggest what I use... but to be completely honest.. all daws do about the same thing, and its all personal preference to the user, there are a lot of great ones, Fl studio definitely being one of the tops
