It's early spring and I return to Harris Lake on the Marsh Farm Fishery complex near Godalming for a third time this year.
My first trip resulted in plenty of bites but only small fish - and all during a winter storm. The second trip followed a couple of hard frosts and saw me BLANK!
But it was certainly a case of third time lucky, or third time cracking this new day ticket venue for me, because with perfect fishing conditions on my side I went on to catch over 70 fish in a few hours, including roach, rudd, perch and a bonus tench.
Lovely fishing with an insert waggler float, using casters and hemp as bait - enjoy!

Have you tried bread "flake" for tench? I had a lovely one @4lb doing that. Also once caught a 5lb tench on a small ball of processed cheese, using a cage feeder.

Inspirational John, I've just started a wormery with earthworms, use them regularly to good effect. Your book, we'll I'm just starting chapter 3, the first 2 were warming & nostalgic & I found so much I could easily relate to. My Dad lived for fishing, he took me all up & down the Severn & Avon from the age of 5, I know he's with me every cast. Great stuff, thank you.

Nice fish with a basic setup, well done. I'd have used a 6lb line all the way through, been fishing for well over 75 years and have never known a fish put off by it and you've got so much more control over the fish unlike you had with those tench. Still can't get used to being able to fish such venues in the close season. In the olden days all waters were shut 'till the 16th of June.

Yep, although in Yorkshire where I grew up it used to be 1 June! Got to steal two weeks on the rest of the country. I’m missing the river but it’s great to have plenty of stillwaters to go at in the meantime. The tench don’t go very big in there and very few carp - I agree 6lb is about right when the weed growth has kicked in. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I always use 6lb line, 4-5lb bottom. But i only use lift method or float ledger

@Paulforsilvers I also think that they're the best methods. However despite your tackle being right for the job I would have used the 6lb line straight to the hook so avoiding any potentially weakening knots. With modern mono there isn't really any difference between the two. Keep fishing.

Can't get used to it? We've been allowed to fish still waters and canals all year round since 1995, 29 years ago! And in my opinion the closed season on rivers needs abolishing too as fish spawning habits have changed due to climate change. The purists/traditionalists who live in the past would no doubt be up in arms though I guess.

Well jealous of this. Tench are my favourite fish to fight with. But where I live all the canals are poached to bits. My local river just opened on march 17th and was stocked with over 200 trout. There's no decent ones left already. Lads are just whipping them out. I cant wait to get back on the canal and hunt a few tench. Genuine always admire the fishing in england. It sems to be managed so well with all the fisheries and well policed canals. Wish it was like that where i am. Beautiful tench in there. Nice video. 👍👍

Bloody ell, that sounds good and I can’t believe I’ve not thought of it before. I’ve tried all sorts in bread paste and groundbaits, but never milk in mashed bread - nice one 👍
