Float fishing for steelhead can be challenging, low and clear water conditions can make landing some fish even more challenging.
Here in Steelhead Alley, more specifically Erie, Pennsylvania, we are commonly faced with low and clear water conditions. These conditions cause the fish to be easily spooked and can make catching steelhead challenging. In this video, FishUSA Pro Shop representative Josh Feltenberger goes over some steelhead tackle that he has found success with in these challenging conditions.

Some of my most epic days steelhead fishing the last 40 years. In Oregon have occurred in gin clear low water. I go with 8lb mono and fresh eggs or sand shrimp alone. Always for me has outfished all other methods. Low clear water requires natural presentations and subtle techniques.

Awesome video. The specific 10# sunline super natural mono based on diameter vs other monos helps my confidence to try it out for line management on spinning gear. Video was exactly what I was looking for. Thank You!

I agree. Pnw steelhead would destroy 4lb test in fast water. Don't agee using unnatural colors on eggs in low clear water. What looks and smells natural to the fish always produces more fish for me in clear water. I like to cure my eggs the way they are.

There is no doubt that PNW tactics vary quite a bit from ours here in the Great Lakes. Natural colors typically produce more in low and clear water in Great Lakes tributaries as well, although there are times when brighter colors will still produce, especially for the most active or aggressive fish in the hole
