Got this ratty old Float Lock vise from back when AMF owned the company. Going to give it a little love and see what we can make of it.
Link to Penn Tool Co. who currently carries the Whalstrom Float Lock, the current company selling the design.

I love watching a metal shaper in action. It's almost poetry in motion when you see how the mechanism ratchets itself over to make uniform cuts across your work piece.

Just won one at auction and can't wait to get it!

My great Uncle was a machinist. He passed away when I was just a boy, in the early 60's. My father inherited some of his tools. I remember he had a lead hammer like the one you use. I never knew, at that time, what it was used for.

Its about time I rework that hammer, its getting pretty flared out. Best thing is its easy, melt the lead, add a little to replace the amount lost and re-pour.

Weld up the drill marks on that shaft and turn them down and polish. It'll looks just like new! Always enjoy the videos :)

Don't be afraid of a big'un. Often the big shapers go for less money than the South Bends and Atlas toys.

I have a Float Lock bandsaw vise and it has one jaw with v grooves and one with out. So I believe both of those jaws are original to your vise.

Bring that Pacemaker gear up before Saunders event and lets get that tooth cut! I see it still sitting on the table. I wonder if they had that thick jaw on there because the locking section was damaged and it wouldn't hold closed that close anymore? Always good to see some straight line lathe action. :-)

Also curious, what engine is on the floor behind the shaper? Whatcha buildin kilroy?

I've been wishing on a star to see the Pacemaker revived ever since I started watching J's channel, thanks for offering to help fix it Brian! Please video the job, it would be a sin to miss that after wanting so long ;) Yeah, , I saw the crank shaft and was trying to ID it...and then I remembered I'm just a body&paint guy, LOL!

yes, and I had to catch my breath after reading the blasphemous line "Skip to 31:21 to skip the shaper", who could even imagine doing that? The heathens! LOL! I drool more slobber than Kilroy uses WD40 everytime I window shop for a shaper ;)

david sanderson Depends on how you grind it. This tool is directional.

would the thickness of the sliding jaw pad have something to do with lining up the shaft groves for locking in place because of the short tightening length?

Why would anyone skip the shaper action? 😀

Sorry to bother you with this kind of question, but are you using a new video format? I only ask because I experienced simply horrible buffering delays watching this video. It stalled roughly every ten seconds to buffer the video. As a test I jumped over and watched Adam Booth's newest video and watched Keith Fenner's newest video just before and experienced no such buffering problems. My link is fairly fast and I seldom -if ever- experience buffering delays. In fact it is usually fast enough for me to download a file in background without buffering delays. Just curious. Problem solved! Just had to update RU-vid app. This time it actually worked. (Last update just gave me black screen with audio. So I had rolled back to what seemed to work.) These weekly updates are getting old. I've been computer literate since the mid seventies and I have a hard time keeping up with things. Can't imagine what it is like for computer newbies.

I hear ya, I've had an email address since the eighties myself, but I have too ask, What is a computer newbie? Kids are given tablets and smartphones to play with in their strollers and playpens. Really the only people in north america who could be are newbies are over 45, and most of those have used computers at least somewhat at work. You have to try really hard to be computer illiterate these days... Now, which slot on this thing is the punch card slot ANYWAYS??....
@docpedersen7582
@docpedersen7582 7 лет назад
Correct about the kids, but how many are actually learning to program? I was writing basic in Seventies & assembler by eighties. (Now fluent in five obsolete programming languages.) As to newbies: Yah, those who tried avoiding anything to do with computers and now face smartphones... Think VCRs flashing 12:00.

In my city they had a major shutdown of the transit trains because a couple 386s blew up and the guys who knew the language the custom software was written in have long since retired.

FWIW: Its getting worse in my opinion. Most people just buy dumbed down machines (mostly Macs and Windows). On Macs, stuff like drivers, Codecs, etc are automatically updated so there is no need for them to download and install them. When a computer breaks usually it means upgrade time and the just buy a new laptop, smartphone, or what ever device that breaks. We live in a throw away era. I think the average consumer just replaces their old machine every 2 to 3 years.

If you live in a city where a major operation is dependent upon some old 386 nonsense, then it is not a computer issue. Your city has a tech issue that needs a major upgrade. There should never be that type of neglect especially when a public service is affected. There is no excuse for equipment and a system that is this outdated. Extremely poor management!

If something like that was in a flea market around here the price would be $50 firm and missing the moving jaw :(

What kind of $%$%@# puts holes in the shaft of such a vise. For crying out loud, i get it, some things are inevitable, but this just screams laziness. Good thing it got in to your hands, i know you'll do it justice, these are really good tools and it's a damn shame when they get abused in such ways.
