This floating shelf is made from mesquite, and the bowties are from Wenger. it was a lot of fun to build. I did some hand inlay of the bowties, some hand cut joinery for the half lap, and a little power woodcarving to turn a defect in the slab into a feature.

I love mesquite. I lived in Texas half of my life and now reside in the mountains of NC but I do miss getting mesquite wood. Absolutely beautiful color.

It seems to me (as a long time subscriber) that your “format” has modified a bit…. To include more description and how to. I’m enjoying it. Thanks for a fine product and great vid.

I’ve never thought about using a dye in the cracks of wood to make it look more natural to the rest of the piece. Great idea. What kind of dye did you use?

I can't recall the exact brand as this was several years ago, but I typically keep an assortment of trans tint and general finish dyes on hand

Which grinder attachment do you use (brand/coarseness)? I have been looking at getting into doing some carving & it looks like that one works well & leaves a decent surface finish.

That is out of the king Arthur tools, Holly Galahad collection. It is the fine wheel. It does leave a rough surface, what is not shown in the video was loads of finish sanding to dial it in.

Really gorgeous shelf. What did you use for finish? I always struggle on which finish to use in each situation.

Your definitely an Artist, Designer, Craftsman. The work speaks for it's self. I can't say I have noticed your 'Credentials' in the past. Is that new? 😊

Awesome result!! As always, pure quality. Ihave a question, the water you sprayed, it looked like a good amount, I'm always afraid of moisture around my wood, won't that affect the finish? Isn't better to spray, say, denatured alcohol since it will evaporate quicker?
@Benham_Design

That would probably be a safer bet finish wise. I try not to break out the chemicals unless I have to, safe health and environment wise. I live in a fairly dry climate so surface water dries pretty fast and I have never had a finishing issues do to water.
