Hear from General Curator Jack Cover about the plants, animals and microhabitats found on and around the National Aquarium's floating wetland prototype in the Inner Harbor, a constructed habitat that re-creates all the functions of a real tidal marsh. Also, get a sneak peek of what's to come as we prepare to install more floating wetlands in the water between Piers 3 and 4-and let guests get close and explore!

Can't wait til they expand the floating wetlands! It's cool that a crab would molt in there.

Crabs molt on the side of docks. We used to scoop them up in nets when we were kids.

As a child I remember going to the Baltimore aquarium and using the paddle boats in the harbor. I was in PG county then moved to Annapolis. I always wish the water was cleaner. The Chesapeake Bay was getting very unclean. I live in Florida now. I love animals and plants and water. I always wondered if there was a way to make the water clear in these man-made retainment ponds that are everywhere in Florida. Imagine how beautiful the world could be if we truely all behaved as steward of the earth instead of only consumers and destroyers

Very awesome, just concerned, does the plastic mat break down and pollute the water?

Traditionally, floating wetlands can be made with either PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) or organic materials (mainly coconut fiber). In the end, we intentionally decided on PET due to its durability and higher ecological benefit. Here are the facts about PET: - PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) a post-consumer recycled plastic matrix EPA-approved polyester is used in drinking water bottles that do not use BPA (Bisphenol - a chemical produced for various plastic products). PET is a carefully engineered design ideal for rapid growth of beneficial sticky biofilms, which attract microbes (bacteria) to remove contaminants (e.g., phosphorus and nitrogen). It does not break down in water (like organic materials do-which is what opposing floating wetlands tend to be made of) and provides a flexible structure that is easy to anchor and absorbs wave energy.

Wow! I grew up in Baltimore and the Harbor was in bad shape in the 70s.
