/ @ajrestoration This is parts 1 to 3 of the flooded GX390 combined, Some viewers asked if I could combine all the parts into one, and I love to keep my viewer happy. This is a lengthy video, so grab some popcorn and your favorite snacks. If you already saw parts 1 to 3, please skip this one.
I found this Honda GX390 at the recycling yard and it looks like it was flooded, I could not let it die, go to the crusher, be melted down, and become a sad Coca-Cola can.
This is my attempt at saving it, just remember I am not a professional, I will probably do something stupid, and stuff something up hahaha anyways
I hope you enjoy the video.

Honda began manufacturing small engines for use in power equipment products in 1953. In 1973 Honda introduced Honda Generators, Tillers, and Outboards into the U.S. Market. Water Pumps were added to the Power Equipment lineup in 1975, followed by Lawn Mowers in 1979. Four years later, Honda snow blowers were added to the product lineup.
In 2015, Honda celebrated a significant milestone: over 40 million satisfied Power Equipment customers in the United States.
Honda Power Equipment products are assembled at 11 Honda manufacturing facilities worldwide, including Honda Power Equipment Mfg., LLC located in Swepsonville, North Carolina. Research, development, and testing activities are conducted at Honda R&D Americas, Inc., located in North Carolina, and Honda R&D Co., Ltd., in Japan.
Honda Power Equipment Mfg., LLC (HPE) has boosted its general purpose engine production to 2 million engines per year for Honda and other manufacturers.
In addition to engines, HPE produces Honda lawn mowers, generators, snowblowers, pumps, tillers, and string trimmers.
Honda's North Carolina Research and Development Center is an 11,000-square-foot facility established in 1993 that conducts product engineering, prototype development, and testing of power equipment products.

Overall nice. You should have set the coil air gap with a business card or something similar. You can't just eyeball it. That may be what's scraping. Also, by completely removing the governor arm, you need to index it with the throttle plate in the carb. And I would have oiled the bore before inserting the piston. Yeah, I know you oiled the rings, but the bore is important too. And even on a small engine like this, it's important to find out what the sequence of bolt tightening is. You'll get there. You've got the big stuff covered!

I've used this sprayer several times now on brick pavers, a wood deck, patio, and a driveway. ru-vid.comUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX It has performed as expected on all surfaces. For larger areas like the decks and patios, I think I will be looking into a surface cleaner attachment to speed up the job, or at least make it a little easier. Hose and sprayer connections are tool-less, tight, and quick. I used the yellow nozzle on the concrete/brick surfaces, and the pressure was adequate for cleaning those surfaces.I am disappointed that these units are still being shipped with a nozzle storage holder that allows them to vibrate out of the holder way too easily and become lost, but I don't want to knock off a star for that reason. The functional part of the washer works very well, so I would recommend this product.

So when I watched you put the lifters in I saw that the lifter closest to you didn't slide in smoothly you had to force it in and when you did it sounded like it was scratching, When you put those lifters in they need to move freely in and out, if you stick it in it should fall right back out that's how smooth they need to be, I wouldn't run the thing for long with a lifter knock, it could cause further damage to the engine. Besides that you did an excellent job. (p/s, make sure both lifters move freely not just one of them and remember which hole came out of because they need to go back in the same hole)

You and Machinery restorer have helped me start doing restorations on this kind of stuff. I bought a used parts washer and a sand blaster and I’m building a mini paint booth because I can’t powder coat where I live and I don’t have the money. As my big project I have a John Deere LX176 lawn mower that was my grandfathers and I’m going to do a body restoration on it. And as my small project I also have a craftsman engine from the late 70’s that I’m going to “somewhat” restore. I’m only going to do a custom paint job on it only because it already runs really really well and doesn’t smoke at all. I’m thinking a yellow and black paint scheme also little black pin stripes since those are my favorite colors. Hopefully I’ll move up to restoring a whole mower or a tractor someday.

When reinstalling the start rope in the handle, it always best to make a figure 8 knot like the other one in the recoil housing. Overall, you should have a long lasting engine.

The knocking noise is far more than a valve. I believe it is the connecting rod either on the pin end or the crank end. That should have been miced and tested with a compression strip. These bearingless connections are really a flaw in the design.

I have disassembled and repaired thousands of such engines. I was interested in watching a layman do this work. I was laughing most of the time, but when he took out your flywheel WITH A HAMMER, I DIDN'T LAUGH, I CRIED!!! Engine knocking is a distant echo of hammer blows! Just kidding... Check that the flywheel isn't resting on anything. Congratulations on your hard work!

About the noise: I think the piston head is hitting either the gasket or the head. When you fit a larger piston it nay give those problems, as it is bigger bore piston may hit the gasket or as it is another piston it may be longer from pin to head size. Inspection will tell, the hitting point will be gray / different color, even if it has only run for a few minutes.

This condition is only on one spot...all other measurements are at or above the service limit. This engine drives a generator and I dont believe the cranks are not available currently. The engine ran great, but I hate putting this back together with this condition. It does have an out of round condition on the journal of 0.0017 worst case. There are no oversized bearing for this motor. Any thoughts/advice on using this crank?
