The A421 was not built with adequate drainage and other places have blocked drains - all avoidable

Dig a hole in a low lying area, put a road in it and then be surprised when it floods after heavy rain...

Shame the highways agency doesn't clear the drains.

The A421 was constructed on a flood plain. There is inadequate drainage on every part of that stretch of bypass from Marston Moretaine up to A1 interchange..

Look upstream, why doesn’t the water soak into the ground/vegetation anymore? Maybe the amateur hydrologists have been at it again….dig it straight and dig it deep said the farmer, so it will all wash downstream with all the topsoil, chemicals, pesticides and other crap agriculture dumps on the land…

That’s not flooding, that’s poor maintenance or design.

Flooding should not happen, the highways agency should have a way of channeling water. Rivers/ canals should be obviously they are not, the people are suffering.

If we give a few billion to Africa would that help?

So much cope in these comments. Yes, clearly the problem is drainage when a whole MONTH of rain lands in places in one day. I am sure its the same problem across central Europe. More extreme weather events are due to climate change, which we see more evidence of every day.

Pump failure, Highway maint is terrible they can't clean weeds from drains, but this case is just that the lifting pump stopped.

The Thames has frozen over 8 times, last time in 1962, the Seine in Paris has also frozen over and had the big flood in 1910...can't blame that on cars

They have been taking green taxes from us for years now and we still have done nothing for the infrastructure of our country to cope with the weather. Lots has been washed abroad to support projects in other countries. So reset levels taught me a lot when, under instructions from the EU, we stopped the maintenance needed to cope with the water. The Dutch designed it, experts in water management. We even took a guy to court for building a dam around his own home.

Has anyone heard the Prime Minister say anything about this disaster?
