Florence and the Machine perform "Cosmic Love" live in the KEXP studio. Recorded 4/16/10. host: Kevin Cole engineer: Kevin Suggs cameras: Jim Beckmann & Patrick Richardson Wright edits: Jim Beckmann
Lhourd Fernando He's a true definition of talent. This song with the Harp is beautifully done. I cannot think of another band that uses a harp like this for their music. Of course we cannot doubt that Florence has a good voice, she's incredible. As a musician, the instrumentation definitely doesn't go unnoticed! I love it!
absolutely, KEXP did a wonderful job on this set. radio stations typically have very good studios and their sound techs are amazing. see also BBC radio 1 sets, they are top notch
I've referenced this video in so many conversations with fellow artists about the use of Acoustic White Space. It is so truly haunting when everything falls silent. It accentuates the notes and lyrics so profoundly. It is an encyclopedia entry on dynamic range, and the importance of notes NOT played, and what it is added by their absence.
+Sarah Rose Music Absolutely. But what's interesting is that singers are taught not to breath into the chest, as in the chest should remain motionless. Clearly you can see Florence ignoring this convention, whilst she inhales her chest rises noticeably. Maybe that's why she sounds so distinctive.
Think that is one of the most wonderful things I've ever read on here - what an amazing person you must be. She saved my soul at a very different time of my life. x
Savannah Greer Well Savannah, I wish you the very best in your life. Many of us did not come from privileged backgrounds and it does get better with time. Have confidence in yourself because you made it this far. There is much beauty in the world and surround yourself with positivity whenever and wherever you can.
I lost my mother to cancer. Today, December 1, it has been three years since the doctor told my father and me that she would not survive. She died on Christmas. This song is very important, it reminds me of my mother and in a way it comforts me.
I'm so sorry. I'm in a similar position right now.. my mom is my everything and it's been a fucking dark year. But, she's lasted far longer than they anticipated. They gave her a few weeks...in may 2020. I'm counting my blessings every day we have her.
@@HolyMyBackHurts the literal definition of heaven is the cosmic celestial universe. Yes religious cults have seated their many man made- up gods there. A slice of heaven is simply put, "out of this world!". It is not a religious saying except to the ignorant or religious fanatics.
an existential beauty stacked inside truth. She helped me cry at a time when I was dead inside. I hope she finds comfort and contentment for all the good she's done. 🙏
This is how you control/command a microphone. Look at the position look and the intention. On behalf of audio engineers out there. Thank you. Pro. Just. Pro.
And a falling star fell from your heart And landed in my eyes I screamed aloud, as it tore through them And now it's left me blind The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out You left me in the dark No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight In the shadow of your heart And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat I tried to find the sound But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness So darkness I became The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out You left me in the dark And no dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight In the shadow of your heart I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map And knew that somehow I could find my way back Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too So I stayed in the darkness with you The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out You left me in the dark And no dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight In the shadow of your heart The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out You left me in the dark And no dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight In the shadow of your heart Of your heart Of your heart Of your heart Of your heart
Yes, you can say this is about broken love (not very clear how but for the anguish), but it makes more sense to see it as a fetus devastated by its mother's depression.
I've never commented on RU-vid, let alone the whole interwebs, before. But your reaction to the songlyrics made me do it now.. The last trimester and for months after my pregnancy I listened to this song. This exact version. My daughter, by the time she was 2 months, regonized it. Altough it's indeed a song as i felt discribed what i was going through as a new mom, i hold it dear to my heart. Recently i miscarried. The phrase 'But then it stopped and i was in the darkness, so darkness i became' has a New meaning for me. I am doing good, so is my daughter. I Just wanted to share this for all the women, and men, Who felt this way in a time you'de be expected to be more cheerfull. And it gets better. This song, this woman and her beautiful voice made me connect to the most precious thing in my life, in a time i almost lost myself.
@@ariaangel7733 thank you for taking the time to read it ❤ hope this song helps you for whatever reason you need it for. Greetings from the Netherlands
Bless your heart. Easy to lose a big part of yourself when experiencing such a devastating loss. I too suffered through a still born son over 31 years ago. It still bothers me to this day. Music is the main thing that pulled me through my depression. Artist and songs like this are such a gift and touch so may people on a positive way. Stay strong and this pain you feel will ease over time.
I’ve been playing this song for my daughter since she was 3. She’s 6 now and still says it’s one of her favorite songs. Mine too and I listen to rap😂😂😂
This is maybe her best song, so powerful and emotional. I remember first hearing it in 2010 and it blew me away totally and still does, her voice is insane.
This video is 11yrs old is undoubtedly the best version of this son. I keep going back to it again and again, year after year. This is incredible. The album version is boring and not at all the same. Listen to them back to back, you'll see. There is only one true copy of this song. This is it!
Hi Matthew, have you listened to her performance at Royal Albert Hall? That performance is my favorite. Her personality and charm shine. It's here on RU-vid. Enjoy!
She has a beauty from the 12th century, when beauty and justice used to reigned. Her voice sounds like an ancient Carolingian spring breeze in a flower garden, im feeling like a poet today.
I am now 60, a musician and a singer in choirs from time to time, and this version that Florence performs is my inspiration for what it means to be a creative, engaged and creative singer.
My absolute favorite recording/performance of Cosmic Love. Hauntingly beautiful, stripped down acoustic with mesmerizing harp…..this performance destroys me every.single.time!!
Clicked on this because kexp has an extensive video list of amazing live performances, and I am of course pleasantly surprised, but if you like this I encourage you to look through other artists on there, too. There are some truly amazing shows
The reason why Flo is such a good artist is not her voice. It's what her voice tells. She has something that goes beyond the pure talent: she has something important to share, a word of peace for the human kind. Florence heals my soul every day...
there is a FATM - meme :""If you ever feel sad, just remember that the universe is 14 billion years old, and you still somehow managed to be alive at the same time as Florence Welch.""
If you knew anything about history, you would know this is probably one of the worst times to be alive. Even if we're just talking music, the 60's and 70's were 100x better. This is good, but only when comparing to the rest of modern music which is horrible.
@@booishoois309 yeah. It's 2020 you can buy stuff and have them arrive at home without leaving the house. You have a mini computer in your pocket that can connect to anyone anywhere on earth. You have the internet so you can listen to any musician anywhere, discover new sounds yet here you are complaining. My recommendation to you people is to look at sounds coming from countries where genres you like are just picking up steam. The best songs I've heard recently aren't even english. I too could complaint like you about how music from the past was way better but that isn't true. The audience has changed and so has times. There's a million artists out there waiting to be discovered you're insulting their work when you just look at the billboards and assume people making music aren't good enough. Discover artists support their work. You shouldn't care that an artist you don't like who makes songs that isn't your taste is getting millions of views/streams when you can find people who make good music that you like and get only about a thousand listeners
@@cbennett196631 As a mental health advocate, that is a grossly disturbing thing to tell someone that is hurting. Tim, I hope through music and self-care you find your peace, your worth, and know that your feelings are valid because they are YOURS. Love and light xoxo
A very kind and caring social media contact, and now friend, shared this with me when my sister died. I'm glad he did. Years later it still makes me cry.
All these years later I’ve still never gotten over this version of this song. Florence is amazing and the harp musician, just wow. Still blows me. And rends my heart in two.
Personal opinion: Best live performance of all time! She doesn't take a wrong note, it sounds recorded but with the magic of a live perfomance. Incredible!
KEXP has to be, hands down, the best platform for artists to break out and get known. The sound engineering is top notch, I have a home studio and I can appreciate the amazing artists sound.
" I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map And knew that somehow I could find my way back Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too So I stayed in the darkness with you" Absolutely gut wrenching. I choose to walk beside my friend down this dark cancer journey she is on. How could I not? She's my best friend. It is absolutely heartbreaking. This song speaks volumes and gives voice to that journey even though I know it's not what the song is about. It's complex enough to give meaning to whatever grief or heartache you are going through.
