Organist Janet Yieh plays American composer Florence Price's 'In Quiet Mood' (1941). Performed live for Sacred Music at Columbia University in New York City, on the St. Paul's Chapel four manual Aeolian-Skinner organ in February 2021.
Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953) was the first African-American woman to have her work championed and performed by a major national American orchestra. Her prize-winning first symphony was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1933. In addition to her four symphonies, she also composed concertos, art song, chamber works, piano and organ music, much of which has been rediscovered in manuscripts over the last decade. Completed on August 7th, 1941, she wrote this work ‘In Quiet Mood’ originally titled as ‘Evening, Impromptu for Organ,’ with a moving string accompaniment to the soaring clarinet reed solo.
