I suppose being on the ground makes them easy prey for predators, which there probably is an increase of. Where I live there is an increase at least. Because of all the new houses etc and roads
Burrowing owls have both problems here, predators and encroaching human use of land. The little owls have government protection which helps. Thank you for the lovely response.
