Collecting Wild Fish in Florida is quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to enjoy the fish keeping hobby. On this collecting trip a few months back, Kevin from Aquascaping Supply and I caught Florida flagfish, least killifish, golden topminnows, crayfish, and more. The fish we kept are doing well and I'll have an update soon.

Hey, guys..I've been keeping wild Florida fish for a while - thought I'd share a few things that are hopefully helpful..good move putting the flagfish in the tank with algae, also least killifish and sailfin mollies are great algae eaters..least killifish eat MAINLY algae - they spend all day at it and will only take a few pecks at flake food (basically no cost fish that are mellow and don't bother any other species)..sailfin mollies eat algae all day, too; but are omnivorous and will stop eating algae to eat some fish food or worms or even grass shrimp...I keep a good number of grass shrimp in my tanks because they do some cleanup , and golden topminnows will chase and kill them , at which point the flagfish, mollies, gambusias, bluefin killifish and golden topminnows all join in pecking them apart ..all those species also like to eat fry, so if you're trying to breed you know what that means..( I have all these species in the same tank, so any fry born are just live food) ..too many male golden topminnows usually results in the smaller male(s) getting chased by the bigger ones pretty vigorously...mature male sailfin mollies are very beautiful (don't know if you're familiar with them yet - they have irridescent green tails, orange chests, and LARGE spotted dorsal fin with orange fringe)..if you get mollies, get 3 or 4 females to 1 male - the males spend a LOT of their time trying to impregnate the females , and will harass a female so much she can't eat if there aren't others to divide the male's time.."baby" bluegill (like the one you caught) and the species of small sunfish (caught 2 types here in east central Fla) seem to only want live food..the bluegill is fairly active but the small sunfish species will spend almost all their time frozen in some dark spot - they're apparently ambush predators ..they're pretty but I don't keep them anymore..another idea: about once a week I go to a nearby lake and collect duckweed and water lettuce in a bucket or 2, I then replace the same that's in the tank with the fresh from the lake plants; within minutes the fish will be up in the roots feeding on the little critters and whatnot that are there..free natural food, they seem to like it..have fun out there!

Gambusia holbrooki...the dalmatian gambusia!!! Awesome score and the flagfish are amazing!!! I just went collecting the other day and scored a bunch of fundulus Escambiae!! I saw you caught a Fundulus species also, I still have yet to get the pygmy sunfish but I'm going to keep trying, I'll be collecting in Santa Rosa county next week
@WildFishTanks
@WildFishTanks 5 лет назад
Best of luck! My friend and I caught our first Pygmy sunfish yesterday, a female. Got to go back and try for some males soon. Nice score with the fundulus! I’m still a novice especially when it comes to them but I have a nice pair of fundulus chrysotus that I’m going to try to spawn.

In Gambusia sp. it appears the melanotic (spotted ) state is a sex-linked genetic variant.

Female flagfish have a black spot at the rear of the dorsal fin, and on your crayfish if the claws are long and narrow they are males, if the claws are chunky looking they are female.

The "spotted" gambusia are a melanistic strain of the same species. They are not "super" males, as they have to fight to mate just as much as the others. The great majority of melanism appears in males. In some areas you will find high populations of the strain. In others, only one or two for every one to two hundred males.
