Paige Newton I am here to lecture current country artists (and their fans) including Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and all the artists imitating them. This includes established artists like Darius Rucker (Homegrown Honey) and Kenny Chesney (Till It's Off) that have taken time away from good song-writing and love songs to contemplate a woman and a drink in a bar or on a country road. Love and values, depravity and privation, blues, gospel, soul, bluegrass, good story-telling, powerful and profound lyrics--that's what Country has been to me in the 23 years I have been listening to it. Kacey Musgraves, Brandy Clark, Ashley Monroe, Garth Brooks, Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush, Maddie and Tae, The Civil Wars, and Lauren Alaina can't crack the top-20 on their releases because FGL just want to get high, laid, drunk, and party on Sunday. I don't blame the artists as much as I blame the Country fans of this generation (and the DJs). How can you boycott "Girl Crush" off the radio and think, for a second, that "Sun Daze" doesn't deserve the same consideration? How can you let these cookie-cuttersongs about partying make you feel good? What is different about "Sippin' on Fire that wasn't said in "Sun Daze" or "This is How We Roll?" How can you call "Mean to Me," a song about how your love LOOKS and not what you fell in-love with or how you feel, be called a good love song? Has the world gone mad? If you want this to continue, please, spare me the "we've evolved" rhetoric.We got worse, not better. If you want to listen to party songs about sex and drugs and alcohol, there are plenty of those songs in rap. Leave Country alone so the good artists don't end up with bad endings to their careers. These songs are objectifying women and I don't want to have songs like "I Like Big Butts" in this genre because it leads to "Anaconda." You want to party? Go do it and stop singing songs about it. That said, if I didn't care, I wouldn't say anything. I care for many reasons, not the least of which is that my music is mostly Country. And I am taking my case to the FGL fans in hopes they will stop listening to this stuff or demand more from them. Because the alternative is to go quietly into the night or become a part of the problem. Like eating disorders because you are obsessed with your body (and it leads to premature death) and alcoholism. Because I have consoled one too many women that they look fine without makeup. This is a vicious cycle. This is glamorizing, in a male fantasy, getting laid and getting drunk. Don't believe me? How many times have you puked when you got drunk? Ever hear a lyric about that? So while you may not like the complaints, the way to shut me up is they either go away or make good music. Period. As for whether you are bothered by my post, I couldn't care less. 23 years and I've never been more disappointed in the quality of the most popular music.
