I’m not going to lie if I were in that situation I wouldn’t have helped. I found out it’s best to not get involved especially since that’s where she had to live at and sleep in. I’m sure she became a target after that.

Totally agree. I just passed 7 years and the main thing I learned is that you have to want it. Period. I hope you're doing well and definitely hope this woman stays clean/sober. She could get a career in some kind of life-saving field since she definitely appears to have the kind of heart one needs to do that!

What do you mean by "down deep"😅😅 For all we know, she's good, period, not "down deep", she just happens to be addicted to drugs which is unfortunate, so she can't control that but that's all. She has bigger flaws, that doesn't necessarily make her bad.

As for me, I did bad things, pled guilty, did my time and when I got out I changed environments. I had no parole to hold me so I left the state and started my life over. Learned a trade, worked that trade for years and now I'm almost at retirement age. My observation is that most of the time you are correct. I was in a medium security work camp. I saw people get transferred in and transferred out. Some when back up to max and some went down to minimum. Most stayed at medium until release date. 98% of the guys I was with in that work camp dorm were fairly normal acting in most ways. Probably 75% were involved with drugs or alcohol. In the classification center they weeded out people with mental illness but all they did was warehouse them in maximum security sometimes in padded cells and from what I heard from the C.O.'s few got any real treatment though occasionally they were drugged. Many were released on their latest possible day then that ended their meds because mostly they just doped them up to control them. We called them the zombie squad because they had a blank look on their face most of the time. So they would get out and almost immediately would violate their probation and get sent back. The drug addicts were similar. More than half of the inmates I encountered were in for possession of a controlled substance. Most of the time that was pot. Not trafficking quantities mind you. This was in the 1980's and our state had a zero tolerance policy. People were getting life sentences for the third time they were caught with a joint. Today there is a push to legalize pot in our state for recreational use. I'm not sure if that other end of the spectrum is a good idea or not but destroying lives for having a single joint three different times was too extreme as well. I think that law has been adjusted though or at least the sentencing guidelines have been. As a trustee in the jail waiting trial for six months I can tell you I saw every kind of inmate there was. My job at first was feeding other inmates then later the library and finally law library where I became a de facto psychological counselor with no training. The C.O.'s kept sending suicidal inmates to the law library to talk to me. Maybe I'm easy to talk to. But boy did I see a lot and realized my life was no where near as bad as I thought. That experience did more for rehabilitation than anything else. I think programs where inmates help other inmates is a good idea. You begin to think differently when you feel like you actually can do good things. A lot of inmates get into their head that they are bad because that is what they are told all their life so they don't even bother to try to be good. That is a huge problem. One 15 year old murder suspect told me he was planning to just walk up to the biggest guy in prison when he got there and shove a shank in his heart. He said he saw in a movie that was the only way to earn respect in prison. I told him that is the quickest way for a 5 foot tall 90 LB kid like him to end up in a grave. I told him to just be quiet and polite to everyone, respect everyone and never miss an opportunity to do chores. That last one will keep a lot of people out of trouble. Half the fights in jail were from one inmate claiming it was not their turn to clean the toilets in the cell block and then a fight would break out. If you just take it on yourself suddenly everyone will leave you alone. You might end up doing a lot of chores but you'll never get beat up for doing chores. since a lot of inmate's route cause of being there is pure laziness in one form or other, everyone will be grateful they can sleep in and not worry about cleaning anything. And such inmates tend to want that to remain and don't want anything to happen to someone who likes to do chores. That's part of why I applied for trustee status. Unfortunately he was found guilty and sentenced to death. Fortunately later the supreme court forced the state to commute death sentences for people who were convicted while young teens. Florida is a weird state anyways. I'm sure you've heard of the famous Florida Man.

@@aidankhaos7687 Non violent crimes, and if they don't have crimes against other people, definitely should be given treatment for their addiction, as opposed to prison time. If the Judges can get them into a program that helps them beat their addiction, it would be so beneficial. They can completely turn their lives around. A program can get to the root of 'why' they feel they need to cover up their pain, that drugs mask.

Can't agree more. We need to punish the violent criminals and help the drug addicts. Putting away an addict doesn't help them at all.

Any crime that requires listing the government as the victim when there is no damage or or theft of property shouldn't be a crime, and certainly shouldn't be a crime that results in jail

Drugs are against the law...as in criminal. They destroy many many lives, children are abused, thefts, car accidents and other related violent crime. There is no such thing as a non-violent drug offense. Not to mention the carnage in Mexico and Afganistan to make, smuggle and transport the drugs. Just like saying possession of child porn is not harmful to a child if they did not make the porn themselves. It is an industry of death and destruction.

Even if it doesn't kill (like stabbing someone in the hand or face) that injury can be impairing enough to leave the victim open for a more decisive blow. Something that people forget; in a fight, any injury can be life threatening, even if indirectly. This is particularly true if weapons are involved.

The only crime half of our inmates here have committed is drug possession. We have more people in prison than any other country because we have the most aggressive criminal justice system in the world. Not even the Chinese and North Korea combined can beat us in prison population numbers. Of course Chine does keep down their inmate population through frequent executions with short appeals processes.

And all it would have to do is nick an artery, and someone could very easily and quickly end up dead. Also, remember, this heroine of an inmate suffered an injury to her hand in the act of saving the deputy, and it's likely that particular wound was caused by the makeshift shank. But this just goes to show that just because an inmate has committed a crime, it doesn't mean they are a bad person, or that they are beyond redemption. Too many people have never been given a fair chance and able to get good jobs due to a messed up judicial system that slaps them with a felony and not bring their cases up for review to give them an opportunity to prove themselves. It happened to my sons and I was a single parent. My only weapon against them was years of prayer and my attorney was Jesus Christ. Thank God my sons are well

That's false. You can be cured from being a drug addict. I've been involved in research that prove what I'm saying. The truth is society does not want ppl to think they can beat it because it's a cash cow. I spent more than half my life on drugs started at 10 43 now, and I've been completely clean for 5 years with zero desire to want to return to drug use. That means I'm cured. I've gotten so sick of hearing the excuses people make just to continue being an addict. It's a false perception that has proven to have grave consequences. And no amount of well what about this, or what about that, will change my mind. If society knew that addiction could be cured we wouldn't be saying it can't. It's a mental game that's being played so the prisons can stay full and addicts can have an excuse to fall off the wagon. I've argued with ppl in group over and over and in the end they can't deny what I'm saying is true.

One year of rehab is by far better than a year in jail…for everyone. Drug offenders do not belong in jail or prison. I’m shocked that Floriduh has such a long term rehab.

@@phallondavenport470 maybe for some but I'm fully cured. I learned my lessons in life. I don't care what AA or what NA say about addiction. Not everyone lives their entire life as an addict. When I went through treatment I refused Aa Na and their 12 step program because the first step is to admit that you are powerless to your addiction. I was not powerless and I have made it without relapse for 9 years.

From someone who 10 years ago got into some trouble, did 4 years probation and never been to prison ( & hopefully will never make it there) probation isn’t always there to help someone. Depending on who the P.O. Is and how they view an individual, they can also make life hard on you and abuse their position of they so chose. I’ve experienced both circumstances with two different officers in my 4 year sentence

@@dallas218 I used to be an addiction counselor and met a bunch of POs. Never met one I had an ounce of respect for and knew a couple of real monsters. The whole system is geared toward abuse and exploitation of vulnerable adult survivors of childhood abuse and neglect. Sickening. I always say, "Criminal Justice System: plenty of criminals but no justice."
