There's a reason why you don't hear about squatters in rural America... Rural folks don't call the police.. they take care of it themselves.

That sheriff just gave an update. That press conference was last year. In the last calender year since that press conference there have been precicely ZERO home intrusions in that county!

The Sheriff of Lee County said the same thing. We love our Sheriffs in Florida

Born and raised in Florida... I came home after an big storm evacuation and had illegals living in my home. I had them at gunpoint while I was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher. I had them face down in my lawn with their fingers interlaced while I waited for the police to arrive. The police never even asked my to drop my weapon, I waved at them and pointed to the squatters from my yard. They said " You can put the gun down SIr, we will have this cleaned up for you in a few minutes" This was over a decade ago. I heard about squatters and that is why I forced them outside before the police arrived. I kept a laptop and an xbox 360 that was plugged into my TV. They told the police they wanted their belongings and I said top the police. ANything inside my home is MY property and that if they wanted to dispute it they needed to take me to civil court... LOL! The cops literally held back laughter as I turned the tables on the criminals in the worst way! I had hispanic neighbors 4 houses down that didnt evacuate and I 100% believe called them to let them know my house was empty. They had some of my belongings moved into the garage but probably take it because roads were flooded and huge trees were down. I had a bonfire in my side yard a few days later to burn piles of tree limbs that were in my yard. SOme neighbors including the Hispanics ones were dragging limbs over to burn and helping clean the neighborhood. WHen the hispanic neighbors arrived I used that opportunity to burn the clothes, and even personal photos and items and luggage that the squatters left behind, right in front of them. We locked eyes, they knew that I knew they were in on it. They did landscaping and cut most of the yards in that neighborhood up until the storm, including mine since I worked offshore as a paramedic on an oil rig. All of a sudden neighbors that had lawn mowers were cutting the grass and the hispanic family moved from the house they were renting and the owner moved in one of the Police officers that responded to my home invasion. That is how florida has always been for me.

I know a guy who caught squatters in his home and he wound up screwing the doors shut and then started the house on fire in the middle of the night- he claimed the people had started the fire and his insurance company wound up paying for everything! He got enough money to build a whole new house and got himself a nice little corvette too!!

Every state should be modeling Florida on this.

When I moved to Florida in the late 70s a car drove off without paying at a local gas station. The clerk emptied a magazine into the back of the car. No charges were filed. Fuck around and find out should be our State motto.

I live in the free state of Florida...several sheriffs in Florida will tell you the same thing....someone breaks into your property - chutem!!

It's like your parents when you ask them for help. Their response "do it yourself". FYI: a cleaning service is far cheaper than a lawyer.

I have a family member that worked for a huge bank here in Florida. If squatters were found, or if the former owners wouldn't leave even though they'd had months and months notice of repossession, my brother had to go with the sheriff to evict the people or squatters so the electricity could be shut off and locks changed. Now any damage over $1,000, you pay up and go to jail. Usually, if it's squatters or previous owners now ex-owners, they must go!

A decade ago a friend had squatters in a house he was fixing up for retirement to live in. They sold the windows, fixtures, appliances, doors and were busting up the sheetrock for the wiring in the walls. The cops had been out and did nothing. They were loading up a U-Haul when a bunch of us showed up with baseball bats and guns, not saying it stopped their life of crime but we did stop it there.

Dead people can't steal your house...

Something bad already happened in New York. A woman's mother died, but she was in Europe so she couldn't handle her mother's property immediately. So after a few months when she gets back to New York she goes to the property and squatters kill her. Her son came looking for her and found her body in a duffel bag in the apartment. And still nothing will change in that city.

Meanwhile here in Canada, Ontario a police chief asked people to leave their car keys close to the window/door so car thieves can have better access so they can drive away instead of breaking into your homes... this is not a movie, this is real life.

That was a year ago. Since the sheriff made that public speech, that county has had zero home invasions.. which is insane.

Someone steals your stuff (small/handheld..costs $1-1000), it is called larceny/theft. Someone steals your car (+$10K), it is called grand theft auto. Someone steals/squats in your home ($100K-$800K+)…what do we call that and why does the law do nothing about it (except arrest the homeowner)?

Squatters rights was meant for a parcel of land no one is using. Not a house with running water and electric that someone paid a lot of money for and pays taxes on.

In England a squatter was given the £500,000 home by a court judge , and the guy sold the house and the legal owner had no rights to his own house, the criminals have all the rights and their victims has none

In Florida there are a lot of homeowners who come from up north, including from Canada, for the Winter months. Their homes are not occupied between April and November. DeSantis knows how to protect Floridians.

I’m in agreement. My brother was having issues with a drug dealing neighbor. The sheriff told him that if the guy came to the house to make sure he was all the way inside the house before shooting him.

Here in Toronto our police tell us to leave our car keys by the front door. SMH.

The Sheriff's are a different breed in Florida and i am so here for it and wish more law enforcement thought this way. I live in California and had a home invasion in 2022. Someone died in our family home that night and it wasn't anyone in my family. The investigation that followed that night was shocking to us because it felt like we had to defend using a pew pew to protect our family. It has forever changed my outlook on law enforcement and the DA's office. 😮

We need to stop calling them squatters and call them intruders, criminals etc. Squatting should only apply to open land. If someone else owns the property you are an intruder, criminal, trespasser and should be dealt with accordingly. Don’t let them change the words/descriptions to make the criminals sound less criminal. Like they do with illegal aliens.

Since that press conference, the sheriff said home invasions in his county has almost stopped.

Just FYI, in Georgia those squatter laws will be changing soon in favor of the property owners. Legislation has been introduced, but I think it might have to sit until next year's legislative session as this year's ended a few weeks ago.

I live in Sana Rosa county and we have had literally 0 home invasions since! Love this sheriff!

I love it! I’m in California where squatters have rights, it sucks. When my in-laws moved to a new home me and my husband came to stay at the old house to make sure squatters didn’t intrude.

As a 55 year old Florida native I can tell you that LEO's have ALWAYS been badasses. It's just more publicized now to get messages across to the community. This is nothing new. I LOVE OUR LEO'S!

We used to have a sheriff, who, when a home invader was shot and killed by the homeowner would do a presser about it saying "THE SECOND AMENDMENT WORKS" and also point out how much money the state/county saved by not having to prosecute the invader. Castle Doctrine - someone breaks into your house, you have the right to defend yourself.

If the cops and the feds won't uphold justice the people will take it into their own hands and you might not like it

In my town we don't have squatters. We have layers. One phone call has em bagged, tagged, and removed promptly.

A highway patrol officer lived in the house behind my parents,he came home on his lunch break to find a guy breaking into his house with one leg thru the window,he got a gun to the back of his head and escorted to his patrol car in the driveway

We recently just kicked our squatter out after 5yrs. Sheriff's finally came. We live in a duplex and live 2fl. We were fixing up 1st fl and a so called friend was sleeping in his van in winter, so we said he can stay there til we're done fixing it and that would be 3mths time. We'll time came and he didn't want to leave. He didn't pay rent, no utilities were ever on and had a scumbag of a girlfriend. We definitely need owner's rights to get what's owed to us and keep what is ours!!! I hate being a owner!!!

The guy that was telling people how to squat in houses was arrested by ICE yesterday. Unfortunately he's probably already been released back into the US.

Remember, police don't stop crime, they react to crime. It's your right to protect yourself and property.

The guy they're talking about actually jumped my fence only to be met by my Doberman. He immediately jumped back over the fence. We have it on our security cameras.

As a resident of Santa Rosa county, Florida; I am so happy to have this kind of sherrif and i am very willing to do "community service" and i know that my neighbors also believe in this kind of "community service".

I live in FL and the Squatter thing is a real problem. I had squatters beside me, and it took almost 6 months to get rid of them. They didn't mess with my property. I have dogs and am a Combat Veteran. I'm sure they realized it would end up bad!!! Lol I love this place! More states need to stop catering to criminals and liberals. It reminds me a little of growing up in WV back before it went to a Blue state.
