Very cool. For the past 25 years I have lived less than a half mile from that abandoned house on Durant road. I've never been inside but have passed it countless times. Thanks for the tour. I'm sure it was a nice place back in the early part of the last century. Used to be all orange groves around here, mostly owned by the Mulrennan family. Have a great week!

Awesome as always Jay. This trip over on SR 60 is a great ride to US 17 and Bartow/Fort Meade. Nice town. I love your old Florida blogs, they are the best. I love the old citrus, phosphate and railroad history you show people, a part of Florida from long ago back when citrus, cattle and phosphate were king in Central Florida! The tribute you gave was heartfelt. The drive-in you went to almost looks like an old Whattaburger or Hornes with the steep roof but I do not think they got into Polk. Maybe a Biff's Burger or Maryland Fried Chicken like you suggested, burger looked awesome. Sometime you and Cris should check out Soloman's Castle south of Fort Meade, down between Arcadia and Wauchula, it will be worth your time. Amazing video as always. God bless and happy 4th to all!

That first shot of Ft. Meade reminds me of Downtown Miami Springs except it had a circle at one end that connected to Hialeah. This and your previous video on southwest Polk will come in handy for me. As I scout out some places for my friends to do some cosplay shoots there. BTW Both Generals were at the Battle Of Gerttysburg on Opposing sides. A lot of the restaurants in Polk County have those old timey photos of the town or city that restaurant is located in. Mostly McDonalds, and Burger Kings! You know, you could do a tour of the Minor League stadiums in Florida! That can be done at your leisure! Adam's doing this with the MLB stadiums this year.

i broke my school 400m track & field record on the track of the school where Julian Sands was a pupil, way back in 1992! the school is called Lord Wandsworth and is situated just outside of London, England to the South West. My fave movie he did was Oxford Blues [1984], also starring Rob Lowe & Ally Sheedy. A storm must have snuck up on him, let's hope he didn't suffer. R.I.P

Fort Meade, Florida, located in Polk County, was a post that served as the headquarters of the military forces of the area when it was established in December 1849. The fort was built on the Peace River along a new military road from Fort Brooke to Fort Pierce. The road and the fort were constructed by Lieutenant George Meade, directing nine companies of the 1st U.S. Artillery, the 3rd U.S. Infantry, the 4th U.S. Infantry, and the 7th U.S. Infantry. When it was complete, the post was named for Lieutenant Meade, who would later rise to the rank of Major General during the Civil War. The post was garrisoned by U.S. Army and Florida Mounted Volunteers. Future Confederate General Stonewall Jackson was stationed at the fort in 1851. The post was abandoned in November 1854, reoccupied in March 1857, and again abandoned in September 1857. It was occupied by Confederate forces from 1861 to 1864 during the Civil War. The town of Fort Meade, which had grown up around the fort, was destroyed by Union forces in the Battle of Bowlegs Creek in 1864. Afterward, the town was rebuilt. There are no remains of the post today, but a historical marker designates the site in Heritage Park on 3rd Street N.E., 500 block, in Fort Meade, Florida. © Kathy Alexander/Legends of America, updated November 2022.

It bothers me it is in such horrible shape

I always enjoy your roadside videos. I had no idea that there was a Ft. Meade, Florida. I lived in Maryland for a time not far from the big Ft. Meade, which is still active. I hope you get to go back to this Ft. Meade again when the museum is open. I don't know if you are aware, but Florida supplied most of the beef to the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The Union wanted to capture as much as they could in Florida to stop the meat supply because they knew that would demoralize the men. I don't know if there are many Army bases (if any) left in Florida, but I do know that Camp Blanding near Jacksonville is still active for reserve training and Civil Air Patrol encampments. They have some pretty old buildings there.

I do know of a real haunted house in Ft.Meade, Fl. I contracted to do some work on this particular abandoned home that a church bought to turn into a meeting center. The lady told me about a small child dressed in old time clothes that could be seen once in a while. I didn’t tell my employee about it. A few days later while talking to him. He mentioned he saw a young child running up and down the stairs. He said the child looked and was dressed like he was from back in the 20’s or 30’s. He had a strange feeling about that child. I didn’t tell him the child was a ghost. He never saw the child again.

1917 in Maryland Fort George G. Meade was established as Camp Meade in 1917 as one of 16 cantonments built to prepare American Expeditionary Forces for WWI. Named after Union Civil War officer, Major General George Gordon Meade, Fort Meade was home to the first women to serve in uniform.

@@TampaJay Florida's main center for training was up a Camp Blanding. I mean its reasonable FL's Ft Meade had some peripheral involvement in maneuvers, but might be too far for ground training. Otherwise maybe involvement in Army Air Forces training...I know there were a "few" airfields involved. Probably more research to confirm, maybe when the museum is open lol.
