During our expeditions through the wetlands of southern Florida, we had one group of birds in mind that we simply could not leave without highlighting for you guys: the herons and egrets! Perhaps the most ubiquitous and beautiful of Florida's water birds, these avian species can be found all over the state, and we saw them in every habitat and location that we explored. They are as perfectly adapted to their environment as they are stunning to observe, so get ready to meet some truly incredible Floridian wading birds!
Check out our Costa Rican water birds video to learn about more amazing avian species, and see more Green Herons!

Learning about herons and egrets never gets old, I often see people not very interested when they see an egret or heron. The reddish egret was beautiful, sad to hear they are often targeted for their plumage. Plumage looks better on an animal, not on someone’s hat or something. Great episode guys! Can’t wait for more

Thank you so much Allen! It’s a shame that so many people find herons and egrets to be commonplace and uninteresting, we think they are such unique and beautiful animals and I’m glad you agree. Plumage definitely looks better on the bird, and it’s a very good thing that the plume trade has been reduced in recent years. Thanks for watching! - Harrison and Evan

I’d love to see the Reddish Egret! It’s the last heron/egret in the US that I still need on my life list. Great video guys!

Reddish Egrets are truly amazing birds, it was such a privilege to be able to film them. If you ever find yourself in Florida, I hope you’re able to check them off of your life list! Thanks for watching. - Harrison and Evan

Oh yeah, FL is a great place for water birds. Unfortunately, they've run off with a few of the snakes I was looking for down there, so we have a love/hate relationship. Nice find on the reddish. Always learn from you guys, keep 'em coming.

There are definitely a lot of really cool wading birds, but we have also lost a few herps to their predatory exploits. The Reddish Egret was a lucky find for sure, we had to get up very early in the morning to see them. Thanks for watching Rob! - Harrison and Evan

I think this is one of your best bird videos ever! I learned a ton about heron taxonomy and ecology, and greatly enjoyed the diversity of shots throughout the episode. Never realized that herons and egrets are essentially the same thing. Fantastic work Harrison and Evan!

Thank you so much Ben, that means the world! Florida is home to so many amazing water birds, and we got very lucky to feature so many. It is interesting how arbitrarily the taxonomy breaks down with herons and egrets, I’ve always wondered why they were split that way. Thank you so much for watching Ben! - Harrison and Evan

Great video on the herons and egrets guys. We have a green hero that visit our small outdoor fish pond. If you saw that video our pond isn't very big but the green heron comes occasionally to help himself/herself to our fish. Really enjoyed the video!

Love love loved this episode. What is the IUCN? The snowy egret wins for me - so majestic looking! Liked the music behind the words at the end of the episode too. Is that part of the capability of the new editing software? Great job, as always guys! You need to take me to the Venice Rookery next time you’re in Florida with me!

We’re very glad you enjoyed Grandma! The Snowy Egrets are beautiful, definitely a favorite of ours as well. The IUCN is the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the organization that determines which species are classified as vulnerable, endangered, etc. The music actually comes from a copyright-free library of music that we have curated for use in our videos, specifically that song is Paradise by Ikson. Next time we’re in Florida we will definitely visit the rookery with you!

Wow! The heron diversity here in Florida is amazing! Two questions though. 1) Did you guys ever see any bitterns here? 2) Is that the rookery behind the Geico office and Ford dealership?
@TheWildlifeBrothers
@TheWildlifeBrothers 3 года назад
We definitely got lucky with the wading bird diversity that we saw, it was a great trip. We didn’t see any bitterns on this trip, and I think this is that rookery yes. I don’t remember exactly what’s around it but it’s in the middle of an urban area in Venice. Thanks for watching!

@@TheWildlifeBrothers Oh I just searched up, the one you went to was on the complete opposite side of the State, I had never heard of Venice, FL. The rookery I birded at once was just a no name cluster of Mangroves behind a Geico building. I don't think anyone really notices it there because it is very hidden but I saw tons of egrets, storks, herons, and cormorants there once.
@TheWildlifeBrothers

Goes to show how diverse our waterbird variety is in Florida that you've dedicated an entire trilogy to them and still have more to cover! So awesome that you got film a reddish egret, I see all these birds on pretty much a daily basis except that one, which I think i've only seen a total of two times in very specific spots elsewhere in the state. Is there gonna be another part of this birding adventure or are we next going to see the remaining wildlife y'all found in your time down here? cheers hermanos!

Florida is definitely a hotspot for water birds, and we were incredibly lucky to see all of these species while down there exploring. The Reddish Egret was a highlight for sure, it was an honor to film such an uncommon species. There is one more part to the Florida water bird series, and then a lot more herp content after that. Plus, we have our alligator collab! Thanks for watching Emilio! - Harrison and Evan

Green herons are some of our favorite birds to find, we’ve filmed more hunting behavior in that species than almost any other bird. Reddish egrets are the rare species we covered, and they are super cool, it’s always a treat to see an animal who really only still exists because of successful conservation measures. Thanks for watching!
