Florida Sheriff Says Gun Control Cannot Stop Criminals from Getting Guns

During a press conference on Friday morning, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods addressed the issue of gun control and crime, acknowledging that there is already a plethora of gun laws in place, but none of them seem to prevent criminals from obtaining guns.
The media seemed to be focusing on the issue of guns, but Sheriff Woods kept shifting the focus back to the individuals responsible for committing crimes. He stated, "Some of you media want to blame the one thing that has no ability or the capacity to commit the crime itself, and that’s the gun. These individuals committed the crime.”
When asked how the suspects in a recent case acquired their gun, Sheriff Woods revealed that the gun was stolen from a car. He pointed out that all the gun laws in place did not prevent the theft, nor did they prevent the suspect from obtaining the gun. He argued that any new gun laws would also be ineffective in stopping criminals from obtaining guns, as "the bad guy’s gonna get a gun no matter what law you have in place.”
Sheriff Woods emphasized the need to hold individuals accountable for their actions, particularly teenagers who are often involved in gun crimes. He criticized school districts for failing to take responsibility for the actions of their students, stating that "our school districts, not just here…school districts across this state and across this nation need to quit minimizing the actions of their students. Hold them accountable. That’s where the failure is.”

As a Canadian never forget this quote wish we had the same freedoms as the US but they’ve totally criminalized the idea that a person should carry a gun for self defence. Minimum two years pen time for carrying. Just got robbed by a guy not long back he had a gun and I did not. Case in point. Doesn’t stop criminals from carrying.

I see the dems vs republicans going back and forth on this and the most frequently used argument by *Anti 2A* advocates are *:* If it saves the life of one child isn't it worth it ? And Firearms are the #1 reason for death of children But so far I have yet to see a pro 2A advocate state how heavily armed criminals are, and that the child gunfire deaths includes people up to 19 yrs old and suicides and gang violence.. Maybe I'm not paying close enough attention , but I used to believe that those Anti 2A arguments were valid until I did my own research . There's a lot of info on the true gun stats, if someone looks for it. The ACTUAL FACT is - Criminals are very heavily armed and anti gun laws have no effect on criminals ability to get guns. Mass shootings in public places are almost always committed by people who are in violation of existing laws. And I'm sorry - But it isn't worth it to have criminal gangs take over communities because citizens have been dis-armed. What is the REALPROBLEM? We've become a society where there are greater opportunities in crime than to be a productive citizen, ever since we started sending our production jobs to Asia. THAT IS the source of the problem Until that problem is addressed, I'm going to arm myself.

Here in the UK, we don't have many guns. Criminals tend to use knives and guess what? the press blame the 'knives'. There are even amnesty boxes for people to drop knives in. Most of the knives are for kitchen use, (with odd rambo thrown in). So you are right. They blame the weapon, not the society that causes people to kill. It's madness.

@m_train1 Seems a reasonable comparison. It's just not accurate to suggest that people are any more rational on that subject. _"One is a right. The other a privilege."_ Oh? In terms of reality, everything is a privilege in the sense that it can be taken away and punished after the fact, and from the perspective of authoritarians it is the government's prerogative to do so. We're not even talking about someone having caused harm, just having ticked a box on a form which says they violated the law. And regardless of whether it actually happens it is unethical, political persecution to punish a proprietor for selling an item to someone who was at the time within their legal right to purchase it.

There are tons of sheriff's like this one. About a decade ago we had a rash of home invasions in my state. The chief of dept. Of safety had a news conference, explaining to the citizens that a home invasions is reasonable cause to fear for your life and to use our guns. Within about 2mths many of home owners engaged the invaders and the invasions stopped.

As a law-abiding citizen, I always try to educate myself and gun laws and states that I visit. I visited California and asked a local officer about the laws there. He educated me with the rules, but also gave me his own opinion. He said “it’s always better to have a firearm on your person because some of these laws just don’t work out it’s better to protect yourself and those around you”. It was a relief to know that there are people out there that are not anti-gun.

The problem though is that California's governor is still looking at ways to restrict the civilians' rights with concern to the 2nd, and if you are involved in a self defense shooting you may have to deal with a prosecutor that will work his/her ass off to find something innocuous that would have you thrown in jail.

I’m a retired police officer and I carry everyday under LEOSA. Everywhere except my new job. I work security on a college campus where I’m not allowed to carry a gun anywhere on campus property. We have plenty of “no guns allowed” signs to keep the campus safe. If there is ever a campus shooting I’ll just point to the sign and hope that works.

Literally one of my earliest memories is my Dad telling me guns don't kill people, people do. I am blessed to have been raised the way I was. My grandparents were NRA firearm safety instructors. I was able to pass on generations of safety and training to my boys. Taking the mystery out of the firearm and making everyone safe handlers would make the world a better place.

While living in Illinois, 70s I went into a gun shop across from a grade school. A teacher/parent group wanted the store closed. The owner said the week before the front door opened and a 45 caliber pistol came in shooting, reloading twice until they dumped a bucket of water on it, rusted and dropped. There was NO HAND ON THE PISTOL, JUST THE GUN.

Yup. There are good and bad people yet somehow they think bad people aren’t all bad and punishment makes them worse. True in some situations but not entirely true. What really needs to be set is the integrity of the people to structure themselves better for a thriving civilization. How that can be achieved is complex, but overall that is a first step to be taken for some betterment of the People

This sheriff is a breath of fresh air. I personally have found that the sheriff's of this country are the real heart of law enforcement. The reason is that they are elected by the people and are there to serve the people. City and state police don't have to answer to the people because they are appointed and answer to whomever appointed them.

My son was murdered by a juvenile, I'm not even sure how he got the firearm since we have laws against it. And in my great state the detective can't even question them without a parent or lawyer present, so they're free to do it to the next person.
