X-ray technologists seem to be the low man on the totem pole in the O.R. I have been yelled at by surgeons, and it wasn't until I spoke up for myself that it stopped. There's no need for bullying when we're all there for the good of the patient.

@@lillyfair8816 this information is in the public domain and came out soon after news of the most recent mishap. I wouldn’t know how to (re)locate it. Apparently, the settlement terms were sealed. I had a DVT in my leg. My PCP recognized the sign and sent me to the ER. They did a CAT scan on my leg. The radiologist diagnosed it as phlebitis. The CAT scan tech asked him to re-read it because she saw the blood clot and it had moved from the lower leg up to the upper, inner thigh. That tech speaking up, could have very well saved my life. It was a laparoscopic surgery, unless they were looking at the monitor, they may not have noticed until it was too late . Once the artery is severed before removal, it can’t be undone . There really needs to be more of a team effort in the operating room , with the body part/ area clearly marked. A pre surgery briefing with the patient and entire team , just prior to the administration of anesthesia. The protocol should be that when it comes to patient health and safety, degrees and titles don’t matter , everyone should be expected and encouraged to speak up without any fear of repercussions.

After noticing that her heart rate was continuing to decrease, I refused to give the next shot, over the doctor’s insistence. Did this to me in 1995 at Tulsa Regional Medical Center. They were supposed to remove gall bladder. 10 years later pain increasing, told all those years of ED visits it was "scar tissue" then had it removed again in 2005. After surgery Dr. told me, "They butchered you, Cheryl. Instead of removing your gall bladder, they took out one-fourth of your liver and left your gall bladder in you to rot! I'm an old doctor, and in decades of practice I've never said this to a patient. I hope you sue the piss out of them!" I was a few days too late to sue; it was 10 years, which was the limit. Lifetime of pain, terminal Chronic Pancreatitis; other doctors diagnosed me in 2011 and they told me, "You have six months to live, one year if you're lucky." But here I still am!!

@@robinsnester1717, Thank you!! No, no compensation; I know how truly Blessed I am just to still be alive, and must accept the positive sources for what happened. The dr. who did it had died in (I believe) 2002 or 2003. I'd LOVE for you to pray for my Darling Granddaughter Sierra who is 22 and slowly dying from HPV vaxx, she needs prayers. She got her HPV vaxx 10 years ago (even though her mother was ON RECORD stating she did not want and refused to have her daughter get HPV vaxx); immediately her health got bad that night, she was sick, had nausea, threw up more and more each day. In 10th grade she had to drop out of school, become homeschooled, even though she loved school; she was a straight A student, in all College Prep and A.P. Classes! Almost a year ago she couldn't eat anything, went for 4 months without food, only an occasional smoothie for nutrition, a small nibble here and there, and vitamins! One good thing: we have a lot of Native North American in us, and I've said for years we wouldn't be here if our bodies didn't store calories, fat etc with high efficiency with extremely slow metabolism; our ancestors were the ones who survived through some long winters or times of famine. We wondered WHY - we were SO DARNED FRUSTRATED that these Kaiser doctors kept sending her to psychiatrists; they wanted her 'evaluated' and it's happened about 12 times! She has a feeding tube from nose to intestines, but she needs the one directly into her intestines, and they keep refusing!! It happened again today, her mother argued with doctors on the phone, the head doctor of the hospital agreed to it, to put the permanent feeding tube in. Then 15 minutes later she gets a call from the head psychiatrist there, saying we need to get a lawyer, that they're trying to force HER into diagnosing this child with mental disorders, and lie and say that's why she's like this - that SHE'S FAKING FOR ATTENTION?? Psychiatrist said she'd be happy to testify, had all their emails and conversations documented! I'm really grateful my daughter is a nurse, with many connections to get this kind of info & help!! Do they just not want to pay for her surgery, are they hiding the fact that girls are getting deathly ill from HPV vaccinations, or are they just evil? Either way, THEY ARE WAITING FOR HER TO DIE, then they won't have to deal with it - that's what this psychiatrist said!! PLEASE DO NOT GET HPV VAXX FOR YOUR LOVED ONES!!!!!!!!

I wrote 'NO' on my left shoulder before having surgery to remove a granular cell tumor. The doctor did NOT appreciate my action and positively butchered my affected shoulder by cutting downward instead of along the natural line of my neck. He was the head of plastics in a large teaching hospital here. On top of that, he covered the site with *plaster tape.* I was 55 at the time and had little to no collagen in my neck where the bandage covered and it was tearing the top layers of my skin so badly when I turned my head I had to take it off. (It came off with several layers of skin leaving a deep skin tear) The post op notes also did not include the fact that my wound was pack full of surgical glue (and I have no idea why) When I was forced to remove the plaster tape to save my skin, the glue came away leaving the tumour excision site with a 5mm deep hole on my neck and the doctor refused to see me! My primary refused to see me saying that I had to go back to the surgeon and the ER refused to treat my open scar (the day after surgery!) so I was left to pack it and cover it myself! Thank GOODNESS I am a nurse and had access to sterile dressings!

As a nurse (formally working in hospital) it was hard speaking up to MDs who came in with attitude, not wanting to be bothered and getting angry at anyone who bothered them. Their arrogance made them unapproachable. I have never understood why arrogant physicians had anything to be arrogant about. They are just as human as anyone else and they are not God. Used to be a first class hospital, until they got bought out by a large corporation. Mass exodus of the good doctors that had been there. Can’t even maintain their communications networks. I had outpatient surgery there a few months ago and was shocked at how inept everything was running. Had to refill the paperwork I had done online, because they couldn’t access the data, then was taken care of in a hospital with only phone communications. The people were very helpful and caring and doing the best they could under the circumstances, but not a safe-feeling place. I was glad that my surgery was done under local anesthesia.

When I went in for the second one in 2023, the anesthesiologist started out saying they were going to use a spinal block. My immediate reaction and reply, was, "Oh HELL no! I had a bad experience with that when I had my 2nd child, and no one is going near my spine with a needle ever again." There was no fuss, no argument, simply an "Okay, I understand." I was put under a general anesthetic just as I had been the first time, and that's how I wanted it. I'm glad I spoke up, and was listened to, because it allowed me to relax prior to going under.

When the organ came out, my surgical tech wouldn’t tell me the name of the organ so I could label the specimen. I made her tell me what it was and I labeled it. When I asked her later why she wouldn’t name the specimen, she said I already knew it was the spleen. For safety’s sake, I need a person at the field tell me what the specimen is.

Years ago when I was in a roll over car accident (seat belt on and some 3/4 hours later I walked out of the hospital). I PROMISED the judge that the next time I got warning bells, I’d pay attention. That was in 2007 and the next time I got those warning bells was last year after that dreaded echo…that started me on the path to TAVR. My warning bells told me I wasn’t safe to drive…not because of the Norco and my broken back…my heart was not in a good place. A few weeks later when I went in for TAVR my interventional cardiologist told my sister my aortic valve was “stiffer” than he had anticipated. I was glad I paid attention to my spidey senses. Everything might’ve been just fine but then it might not have. I would HATE absolutely positively HATE causing an accident that hurt someone else. Can you imagine the expression on the pathologist's face when he received the "spleen"? I'm glad the pathologist spoke up. What's stunning is how long a surgeon who can't recognize a liver was performing surgery. He was no newbie. My first thought when I heard this story was that he must have been three sheets to the wind. But my second thought was, "Even three sheets to the wind, how could he mistake a liver?!" Heck, I was an English major, and I'd still recognize a liver while inebriated. Left/right surgical errors are bad enough, but one can at least comprehend the error. What a bizarre story.

Some doctors, when questioned, just dig in. I worked in Pathology, which is just across the hall from Lab. A surgeon called me and told me to add a blood test. I said I would transfer him to the Lab, but he refused. He “didn’t have time to wait on hold”. I said I would tell the lab, but we needed an order from the floor. Could he please call the nurses station and give them a verbal order? He told me that I could do that. Now, they are not going to take an order from Pathology for an inpatient. He then proceeded to yell at me for five minutes about if I knew what I was doing, I could take care of it. Then he hung up. I called the unit the patient was in, and explained what I had been told. Evidently they were used to this doctor, so they thanked me and said they would call the doctor and get the verbal order from him. 🙄 Now, add to this that I’ve known this man since before his voice changed. I know his parents. He was a friend of my daughter’s in high school. He still grew up to be a pompous jerk.

Was in a room with eight other patients waiting for our turn. They did not give me anesthesia. Told them to please them fix this over sight. Nope, the doctor came in and tried to put a needle in my eye! I fought them tooth and nail! It took 3 nurses to hold me down! Screaming and crying.😢 The eye is a muscle and it hurt like he'll. Then an anesthesia doctor added numbing injection. Too darn late. Being awake and crying during the whole procedure. I cried for days. Went back to see Dr. and told him I was seeing blurry. He put in the wrong da_n contact in my eye! I told him how much it had hurt during the surgery. He said, and I quote "well you've had a baby haven't you? What does that have to do with it!? Mad 😠. Got a second opinion and the ophthalmologist said, " well, it is in there good". He backed to doctor instead of me, the patient. No one has touched my eye since. Did have hip replacement done 2 yes. Ago. That doctor did phenomenal! ❤ some other time I will tell you WHY I had to have the hip replacement done in the first place. Last two surgeries I had thru did this and even used a marker to make the right finger, leg etc. that needed fixing. They did a check list count down to make sure everything was on track. They did this out loud. And they asked a couple of times about any questions or concerns. Isn't that normal?

I know a woman that had lung cancer in one lower lobe. The surgeon removed the normal healthy lung instead of the cancerous lobe. They couldn’t do anymore surgery and she died from cancer two months later.

Doctors have got to learn that all patients have different anatomy to some extent, all diagnosis can differ depending on the patient etc. Each patient is different and many do not show classic textbook symptoms!!

I have experienced doctors (in the ER) who had personalities that actively discouraged input by anyone around them. If you have years of being beat down by a certain doctor, it might be very hard to speak up if you had been attacked (maybe with disciplinary action) previously.
