I find if I pull the threads through slowly right before they lay down, they usually do not twist. I also drop my needle if I see them starting to twist. Love your stitches and thank you for showing that threading the needle trick.
Really enjoyed the video, Lori. I've been stitching a very long time, approx. 40 yrs?, but I'm always looking for new insights and methods. Wonderful video, I learned techniques new to me. My only confusion was calling two differently oriented stitches “horizontal”. I would have used “vertical” for the stitch running north and south, and “horizontal” for the one running east and west. But, overall your directions were clear and the video very well done. Thank you!
Lori, you have put the sunshine back into my cloudy Michigan day! I do the railroad stitching but never knew splitting the thread would make your stitch lie flatter. This is one of the best tutorials I have seen on this. Didn't know about the vertical half stitches and horizontal half stitches either. I am pretty much a self-taught stitcher, and this video has really helped. Can't wait for your next one on beading. Have a great day. GO BLUE!
This was so instructive and amazing to see such beautifully stitched Miras! Thank you. I would be interested to see how you apply this technique "in action", when the stitches aren't neatly in rows but scattered all over the place, some of them already filled in. How do you choose the order in which to stitch them? Do you always go up and down in the same corners? And did you say you use a q-snap with the sewing method, how does that work?

This video was a game changer for me 😊. I’ve railroaded my top stitch for a few years now but never the bottom stitch. What a difference doing that bottom stitch makes. Woohoo! Doing a big ass happy dance 😃.

You never fail to crack me up! I love the last "duck" to give compliments of Mystic Fabrics. Your sense of humor is wonderful and makes me miss my native Michigan. I was born and raised in a small rural farming community about 25 miles north of Bay City, and our neighbor was one of the biggest farmers in the area so we were surrounded by corn, hay, whey pits, and cowsh*t. The only thing that my little town might have been famous for was Iva's Chicken Dinners (which I never cared for that much personally). Thank you so much for showing how you stitch and giving at least me something to mull over and think about trying a new method, especially since I have been railroading only the top threads and have been ending up with uneven threads at the end. Very helpful. I am on my second viewing. I have been trying the sewing method, and can do ok with a line of stitches forward and back but I am struggling to travel around :( I hope you do another video of the sewing method!! Thanks for all the tips Lori, love the description of railroading and why its done - back to stitching (after a 20 year break) and only recently heard of it and did not know why it was done. But know I do! Oh and game change on threading the needle - you rock!
So much useful information!!! I am newly returned to stitching, so I hadn't even heard of railroading until I came back. When I looked it up, I found several people who said you only had to do the top leg. I can clearly see the difference if doing the bottom leg too. Your stitches are incredibly even and cover so beautifully. I will absolutely be trying it on my next start. Also, showing us the partial and squished stitches and then showing where you would use them on an actual pattern is life changing. I bought a kit a few years ago (thinking I was going to be stitching again back then) but there was a lot of bleed over the backstitching and it looked sloppy. I loved the image so much I got it anyway thinking there must be a way to fix that. You have shown me the way. Now I just need to find it so I can see how I can apply your methods to clean up their lines. I'm so excited!! Thank you so, so much for sharing with us!

Thanks for showing the railroading while stitching in hand using the sewing method. That’s how I stitch and I spend a lot of unnecessary time getting those threads to lay parallel. Now I understand how I can incorporate railroading. I am also stitching Stargazer and have been leaving the skin till last. I understand & appreciate the horizontal & vertical stitches now 😁 If I may, could I ask your opinion on stitching skin one over one rather than stitching cross stitches as charted? I’ve done a couple of pieces over one and I found it to be time consuming. The look is really nice but if the tension isn’t there, it can look uneven. Thanks for watching!

Dude, I couldn’t figure out why my 2 ends started out even and by the time I finish they are uneven!! 🤯. So much fun stuff to try too. I am struggling with my backstitching on Dark Queen of the sea and would have done the stitching of her skin so different now!! Thanks so much for sharing this with me!!! I was stitching so I tried your technique…. On 18 count that I purposely started this project on because I couldn’t figure out why you SO dislike 18 count. I never remember it being a PIA to work with years ago. ( I took a 17 yr break from stitching) Well let me join your anti 18 count club! It’s like pushing toothpaste back into the tube. 2 strands through 16 count is much smoother. Great video!

So, I’m very new to stitching, about 6 months now, anything you teach us is awesome to me!! I was wondering if you could at some point do a tutorial on picking the right size fabric counts. I did my first cross stitch, which was supposed to be a small pillow, on 14 count Aida and it ended up being a large walk hanging, lol!! I was clueless at the time and still kind of am. Can we only stitch smalls on say 36 and up? Cause I sure can’t stitch on those yet!! Anyhow, advice like that would be awesome!! Hope all goes well heading back to work. Take good care! 😊❤

Very interesting and informative ... I'm genuinely curious as to why I shouldn't count the selvedge edge when I'm finding the center of my fabric. I mean I get that it would not truly center my piece on my fabric, but it doesn't seem like it would put things that far off that it would matter and it won't be seen once it's framed, right? I don't think I've ever paid attention to the selvedge edge when I center start. I do know that I haven't counted it when I've started in the top left. I'm also now wondering if I'm using the wrong kreinik. I'm not sure I realized there was more than one weight. Yours looks way thicker than mine and on my current project that calls for it, I kinda feel like it's hardly showing and maybe that's why, it's not thick enough. I also can't wait to get home tonight and try to thread my needle (especially with the kreinik) that way. I spend way too much time trying to get that stupid stuff threaded! One question: I stitch with the sewing method in hand, but still poke and stab when using a hoop or q snap. How taut do you keep your fabric when using the sewing method in your q snap? Welcome to my little corner of the world! I’m pretty laid back so apologies ahead of time for the sailor mouth 😆. The easiest way when first starting is to use a magnifying type of light and that will help you! 🦋💙🦋
That is called railroading. By splitting the floss on each side of the needle, the threads will lay side by side instead of tangled, which will make your stitching lay smoother and help in preventing knots. 💙🐈⬛🦋
Oh no, you can not go back to work. That will interfere with our stitchy time. You just took the mystery out of face stitching. Do you do 1 over 1 in faces as well? I am anxious to see a tutorial on beading and then maybe I will try a Mirabilia. I love your teaching style. Thank you for doing this tutorial❣️
I have done one over one face stitching but I will be completely honest I am not a fan of it! I did my Red Lady Pirate and Tiger Lily with one over one. I can add it to the list to show if it will be helpful :)
