I want to share my stumpwork embroidered cabinet with you and the story about why I made it. We will see the design process, the embroidery close up and explore the inside with its secret drawers as well as talk about why these embroidered cabinets of the 1600s (and today's reproductions) are so mesmerizing.
Students Caskets - these are original designs by the artists after taking my Cabinet of Curiosities courses. Each woman has made more than one cabinet and I have chosen one to highlight.

Tricia this is fabulous! I must confess that the cornucopia is the star of the show for me. I would absolutely love to see and hear as much of the history of the caskets as you have time to share! For me, this is the beginning of an historical archive of your work - so every part, from your first thoughts and ideas right up to today is fascinating and so important to stitchers everywhere - - - - and it's all stunning - eye candy at its' very best!!
@triciawilsonnguyen

Yes, I am realizing that this might become an archive. Maybe I should do the Plimoth Jacket too
@wendyholt9988
@wendyholt9988 5 месяцев назад
Absolutely!! - do it all!! - and I would just love to see a Museum collection of every detail, like all of your sketches, records of dates and discussions with all those craftsmen who have participated - - how about a copy of the plans of the caskets - and "new" undecorated caskets also, and the bottles and ink wells. Tricia, this has been a life's work and at times so very complicated for you - so just imagine in 200 years time, if a researcher could access an archive of your work - and see first hand, the CORRECT historical information that you learned and how you were able to represent it to teach others - really sets the standard for "doing history" well!@@triciawilsonnguyen

The beauty of having your own piece is that it is yours. I have the wisdom of seeing many students and some in their own homes with proud as can be families around them showing them to me as the stitcher is too shy thinking her her stitching hasn't 'rated'. One that I can think of is even in a book and around the panels you can follow her life and the beginning of her hands shaking - she spent decades working on it and as her eyes and hands started to fail her - it was recorded in the stitches. A life so well lived and a casket that her family spent an hour pointing out little details to me proudly. That is so special. I am the first person to banish the stitching police and to celebrate the exuberant enjoyment of stitching for its own pleasure. Creating a heirloom that is loved by your family and future generations is way more meaningful than having some 'certificate of perfection'. My favorite embroiderers embroider from the heart.

The locks are so interesting. I will put together another video and show more about the locks. It is the reason that there are almost no caskets on the market for reproductions. They are very different from what is sold for small locks today for boxes.

@@triciawilsonnguyen both of those have been so helpful to me. I watch those animations very carefully! Nothing could illustrate the stitches better. Gorgeous! A masterpiece. Why is it called a casket?
@triciawilsonnguyen
@triciawilsonnguyen 6 месяцев назад
What a great question! It is 17th century language. A casket was the name for a box that held valuables. Today we would call that a cabinet. It wasn't until way after the 17th century that a coffin started being called a casket. This often causes confusion among those who aren't familiar with the lingo of 17th century embroidery and people think it might be a place for ashes. But no - it was the common language for a small valuables box. Taken from Wiki - According to Oxford English Dictionary, the origin of “casket is unclear; one theory is that it came from the French cassette, a 'small casket, chest, cabinet'. In early America, a casket was a box for jewels.
