Great video Erin. Instead of putting the fabric in the oven, could it be put directly into the dryer? I like the modeling you get from baking it but may not want that look every time. Thanks for your great explanation on your process. Take care.
@erincaton1655
@erincaton1655 4 года назад
So the oven will give you the marble look and darken a bit more but you could lay flat and put in the oven for less time if you want to get a little darker with no marble. I don't see why you couldn't just pull it out and dry it but I've never tried. If you do it, let me know! I'd love to know the results 😊

Awesome!! I am wondering if I were to bake in some steel bowls I have vs baking sheet if that would have a negative affect?? I have some red hibiscus tea that I might have to try this with. I remember years ago I would grunge up fabric by wetting it and then scrubbing it with instant coffee or flecking it with a toothbrush dipped in a very strong water to instant coffee ratio. Stronger than the whipped coffee ratio even! Lol

@erincaton1655 4 года назад
The baking really just provided the marble and burnt edge look. I'm actually not sure what doing that in a bowl would do! Is it safe to put in the oven? If so, I say give a try on a small piece of fabric and see what happens. I love experimenting with this stuff!

Had trouble hearing you as you were explaining the different teas! What was the red tea and the third one. I’ve only used black tea and coffee! Never thought to use other ones. Good for you!
@erincaton1655
@erincaton1655 4 года назад
The red is an organic red vanilla (www.prestogeorge.com/proddetail.asp?prod=032VANIL) and the last one was organic peppermint. Both from a store called Prestogeorge in the strip district of Pittsburgh. Sorry about the audio!! I was trying so hard to be good about sound. One of these days I'll figure it out!

Have you seen ink circles MAP SAL? I think it was last year, but it's still on fb, (the Mysterious Adventure Project) I did mine on tea and coffee dyed fabric so it looks like an old map! Zoe xx

Hi Erin! Thank you very much for the great video. This is very helpful. I have never coffee dyed anything yet, but want to give it a try soon. I am doing some investigating on you tube to try to learn how to do it successfully. Your fabrics all turned out nice! Wish me luck! TFS Happy Creating! Samantha

Hi Erin. Thanks for the video. Really liked the vanilla cherry ones too. I think the dark spots are actually from the rack itself. That happened to me one time when I set the fabric scrunched up on my metal dish rack in my sink. Might be a reaction of the metal and the acid from the dying. I’m going to try some different teas too to see what colors I get. Stay safe. ❤️
@erincaton1655
@erincaton1655 4 года назад
Thank you! I honestly didn't even think about it being a reaction from the dying. That makes sense to me! I'm terrible to not know the science behind all of it but I will definitely not put them on the racks to dry next time. Lesson learned 😂 still I want to go buy more of that vanilla red and dye some more orange pieces. I love it!

What about the fabric shrinking? I want to dye some 28count Lugana that is very small for me when I stitch so I am not sure if I will be able to stitch if it shrinks up! 😍

I have used parchment paper on my cookie sheet. I am going to try foil, maybe that will make it a little more marbled.

I'm so terrible because I don't understand what the science is behind any of it. I'm not sure if that helps me or not but it's always worth experimenting! Good luck and let me know!

What is the fabric you call Jerry or Geri fabric? Just curious. I have never heard of any fabric called that. Thanks now to finish video!😊
@erincaton1655
@erincaton1655 4 года назад
Haha it's fabric that a very generous neighbor named Gerri gave me when she gave up stitching. I have yards of it that I'm working through.

Lol. I really thought it was the name of fabric. There is a 27 count fabric called Linda so I thought there might be a fabric called Geri. Lol my name is Linda. So I have a couple large pieces of Gerri fabric as well. Lol thanks for tutorial. Enjoy mania. I love the friendship you girls share and bonus you all love Stitching. 😊

Thank you for the great video! I have never dyed fabric but I want to! They all came out beautiful! I like the specs too! I have a question, is the fabric really stiff where it gets more browned? Just wondering...thanks!
@erincaton1655
@erincaton1655 4 года назад
Thank you! And, no, actually, everything really softens up in the process which is another major bonus. Even in the dark spots.
