Flower Bed MAKEOVER With Retaining Wall and Irrigation Drip System

The main thing that has been lacking with my yard is a nice flower bed. This week we finally had a few days of nice weather so we got a start. We used a sod cutter to remove the grass and to dig out the border for the flower bed. Once we got all the concrete blocks set, it was time to install the drip irrigation system. Since we already had spray heads in there, it was fairly easy. Stay tuned for part 2 when we install the rock / mulch and plant all the shrubs and trees.

Mulch always and also plant ground covers because within 3-5 years you won’t need to use mulch in most of those areas again because the ground covers will cover enough.

Oh meant to say that the wall turned out super amazing and really changed the look of the house. When you mentioned red maple my first thought was, 'will it clash with the red bricks?' then, 'is that too close to the house for a tree?' Can you grow Esperanza’s where you live? The yellow blooms would be a nice contrast & the size is easily managed. Can’t wait to see the next video of this project.

Looks great! If you're still wondering which tree to plant on the end, I would suggest a 'Slender Hinoki Cypress' tree. It grows to less than 12' and 2' wide. It has a kind of whimsical look. The dark green would stand out from the red brick front unlike a Japanese maple and those can get quite a spreading root system. Just a thought.

Love the home, but would love to see some modern but rustic shutters on the brick. Stained a very dark chocolate, but not black to go with the dark colors some of the bricks. I think the green should also be painted a different shade of green. Not light though. Great job on those stone brick edging. The wrought iron railings would look great dark brown or black for contrast too. It would update your home I think. Love your video!

A pretty large undertaking. It would be so nice to have that sod cutter - I have to use the shovel and foot method (slow and so uneven) And I'd give anything for your watering system - I haul hoses. I liked the music thrown in. I'm surprised the Mrs. wasn't out there making suggestions - guess she leaves the lawn work to you. :) You looked cute out there on your belly to get a bird's eye view on the leveling! One thing you should’ve done and building this is use a tamper to tamp down that gravel as much as possible to create a firm base. Just tapping it with a hammer might not be enough. You could have played the theme song from Benny Hill, as you were building that wall in fast motion, if RU-vid would allow it. I think that’s one that they do allow. Where do you live? Oklahoma?

Great job you guys! Looks like a really great start Mr Brian! It will be very exciting to see what you decide to fill the beds with but I can definitely appreciate your dilemma between stone and mulch as I think the same with preferring mulch but liking the convenience of stone for easier maintenance with a leaf blower. I'm sure this is such an incredibly silly and incredibly novice question but might there be a similar color of stone to the color of mulch that you would like so that way it would possibly give the illusion of having mulch from afar via the stone color but while having the convenience of the stone for easier maintenance? Sort of like a mixture of both worlds in a sense? I'm sure that's completely and totally the wrong thing but wondered if by chance that could help you get to have sort of a little of both, I dunno, lol.. 😊

I lift up everyone's prayers, wants and needs to You Jesus, please pour out blessings. May Your favor, grace and mercy be upon the world. In Jesus name come help us all. You know our needs and everything else about each of us. In Jesus name amen thank you Jesus praise God 🙏🕊️💕🔥🙏 Help people to be rooted and grounded in Your love. That they are living in the truth being taught by Jesus. Jesus Christ is the son of God who died and rose three days later and loves all of you. He died for everyone and wants you with Him, to know Him and live for His glory. Come be saved eternally and spend time with Him to know Him. Be free, forgiven, healed, delivered, saved, baptized, whole and let Him show you how He is everything you need. Ask anything in His name 🕊️💕🔥🙏 amen hallelujah praise God thank you Jesus 🙏 Show God, live for His glory. We are to be an example of Jesus for the world to see Him and want to know Him and know Him more. 🕊️ 🙏🔥 💕 2 chronicles 7 14 says if My people humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways I will hear them from heaven and heal their land. People need to turn from their wicked ways, Jesus paid for it. They need to repent, to be cleansed by His blood and live Holy because He's Holy and righteous because He's righteous. Our God said to stop sinning in many many scriptures and He paid for everyone to be cleansed of sin, to live how He said. He dwells in the temple (your body) and said not to defile the temple. He said to defile the temple is death. He's always serious about everything He said to do. He's just as serious about what He said not to do. We live in obedience to His law, every word if it! Deuteronomy 28 there are blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. These go into the following generations, the 3 and 4th. Our children pay the price for our sin. Stop sinning you are sending consequences to your loved ones. By God's law you are. If you don't believe me ask Him, in Jesus name may you see and know the truth in it's fullness. He's worthy of everything He said and paid for, so I implore you to do as God said. Jesus said If you love me you will obey me. Praise God thank you Jesus in Jesus name 💕 🕊️ 🔥🙏

Won't burying the drip cause problems down the line (plugging , leaking , repair) ? Under the mulch would be more convenient and just as effective.

*That Bush went, "Ouch, ouch"... I did not see you prime that PVC pipe for that head or nothing - Just stuck it back on? - **7:23** Looks great. My only concern would be settling without any rebar or concrete on the inside surface?*

Your yard sure was ugly but with so much potential, mine is bad, well used to be my mom's but she passed almost 4yrs now and her whole yard died with her, I watered and watered and it just wouldn't take anymore😢😢, I'm the neighbor with the bad yard😡😮‍💨😮‍💨

I noticed that you did not use mortar between the stones. Won't they move? You said that you used "landscape glue" for the caps. Does that work well? I'm wondering because this looks like something that I would like to do.

Awesome job! How did you mark the angles for the caps when going around the curve? Or did you just eyeball them?

I would add mulch . Using stone mulch is a fad and requires constant cleanup of leaves and other debris to keep in looking good. Too much maintenance in my opinion. I prefer pine straw or pine bark mulch. But there is a variety of colored much.i think planting beautiful dwarf hydrangeas, liariapi, and hosts. I would also plant a large Colorado blue spruce or a blue Limber pine or vanderwolf pine out front

Love the new wall and shape of the bed. Just a suggestion, go to a reputable nursery for advice on plants and trees. Such a chore if you would have to take something out that got too big. That new garden will add a wow factor to your property. Can't wait to see what you decide.

I definitely agree with that! Didn’t have great luck at one of my near by nurseries so planning on trying a couple others this week. Have a great week

Weeping Japanese maples are a favorite of mine. Easy maintenance and don’t overcrowd. I would’ve prolly run that downspout out of the bed to a pop up especially if you’re going to mulch.

Hello! Could you please let me know what brand/style these bricks are? Trying to match mine that are no longer made from a decade ago and these look very similar! Mine were chiselwall from Lowe’s in charcoal/tan color. Thanks so much!

Besides not properly preparing the base, you didn't make the base thick enough. Unheard of to just pour it from the bag an inch thick with zero compaction, etc. please watch some youtube videos to learn how to properly prepare the base, dude.

Japanese Maple are beautiful, but I have read they don't like northern wind. If you are in the right zone, maybe a crepe myrtle would be pretty, a dwarf variety.

Nice job with the wall, the only comment I have is that the stones should be splitting the joints half one one and half.on the the next. This would help keep them from settling downward in a straight downward line. Mutual Materials recommends this method. Good job, and glad you did not get hit with the hammer in the beginning

@Top Notch Lawn Care that is a great video. Can’t wait to see the finished flower bed. Do you have a video on how you measured and cut the cap stones so they fit in snuggly? That’s the part I have a hard time getting right.

This looks fantastic, Brian & Justin. I love the retaining wall. I think a flowering cherry would look gorgeous at the end. Japanese Maples are pretty, but the color starts to fade the older the tree gets. I've had several over the years and eventually pulled them all out. Plus, I think the flowering cherry would look beautiful with the green paint on the house and the bricks.

Love the retaining wall. The roots of my sister's Japanese maple tree are rising to the surface and have ruined the lawn around it. They also think the roots are growing into the foundation since it is relatively close to the house. Have you thought of redbud trees? The "Okie" or Oklahoma redbud has beautiful deep pink blooms in the spring and then pretty green leaves. The other variety I think they call the Eastern redbud have beautiful pink blooms but are a paler pink.

You said a tree that is colorful and I immediately thought of a Japanese Maple! I want one in my back yard but with the soil we have I'm not sure it would survive.

How is your son doing? I miss seeing him helping you on your videos. You were talking a tree in the corner? How about a fruit tree, maybe an apple tree? Then you could make apple pies, applesauce or just have apples to eat. lol

Did you happen to re do the first level of block work to make the blocks to work bond the best way to do blocks/bricks is to always start at the lowest level and work your way up that way you will make sure that you will follow through with bond also I have a Japanese maple tree in my backyard for the last 30 years that is over 20 feet high and and a spread of over 40 feet wide maybe better to use a weeping maple
@AA-cp8ry
@AA-cp8ry 2 года назад
You failed to prepare the base at all. You should have compacted the dirt, then laid the base compacting it ion layers, then laid the blocks. This will will definitely move and fail with time.
