The river rock sounds beautiful. I live on the coast of Maine and love any rocks in my gardens, but found these fabric cloths to be horrific to deal with once weeds get in and attached. You sound like you have a small space to work with, so keep up with the weeds, because once they take hold, there is no way to rip the root system from them, so the weeds (spreading through root types) are hard to remove. It was great for a few years, but I gave up, too hard to use a tool like a small rototiller or one of those fork like tools to loosen the soil each time. Happy gardening, I would love to see your river rock project.

My recommendation would be to use cardboard or newspaper instead of that plastic weed barrier. Eventually weeds grow through it and it can be a mess trying to pull weeds out. With newspaper, u can pull mulch back and add more layers of paper underneath and the worms seem to love it. Biodegradable. Otherwise, beautiful. Love the blue color of home also.

I am interested in why you put weed mat down ? I just did my sons garden and we opted not to do weed mat as it is so bad for soli health and the soil under the old weed mat was "dead". I just hope he does not get a whole heap of weeds he cannot keep on top of. We did mulch it.

A quick word on landscape fabric: I typically don't use landscape fabric, but in this case, the homeowners requested it. I do, however, use it in very limited areas in my own garden where I don't plan on having anything naturalize (like in areas where I plant new hedges), to keep noxious weeds, like bindweed, out. It's extremely effective in that situation. When I do use it, I only use DeWitt Pro5 Landscape fabric because of its ability to effectively wick water down and because of how strong the weave is. If weeds do form in the mulch on top of the fabric, it's usually in very small quantities and they are extremely easy to pull- MUCH easier than if they were rooted into soil. In the end- to each their own. 😊 The most important thing is that everyone enjoy their gardens and feel inspired and motivated to keep planting! 💚 ~Laura

Garden Answer Highlights yeah the landscape fabric was new, but I’ve found in new areas it’s needed! I made a new flowerbed where there was previously weeds and now they’ve overrun it, landscape fabric would probably have helped in that situation

Landscape fabric... 😟 It pollutes, keeps plant roots from reaching deeper into the ground to access water, prevents worms and other insects from properly working the soil, rips up easily, and becomes near impossible to remove later. And weeds inevitably grow above (and down through) the fabric layer anyway. Applying compost and compost extract with the right fungi:bacteria ratio for what you’re wanting to grow prevents weeds from germinating and growing and also ensures your plants will be healthier, build immunity to pests, and require much less irrigation. See Dr. Elaine Ingham and John Kempf for details.

To many plants for that size space. Looks nice now, but in a couple of years it will be all cramped and congested as they grow all over each other. You really only needed about half of those plants.

Some of the plants were annuals. So it won't get congested. Will look really full and beautiful until the fall and most will die in winter. Believe me, Laura KNOWS what she's doing

Buy all full sun perennials, few evergreen (I like to use azaleas) roses, look the labels for height, taller ones in the back, blooming months so you will always have color!

too expensive for a tiny landscape. should make a less budget instead. if gonna put wood chips as mulching. there is no need for pde plastic beneath. it also more greener and worm 🐛 🪱 friendly. should make the ecosystem alive in any landscape.

Lauren is a proven expert and guide on gardening, and she's taught thousands of subscribers (like me) a lot about selecting, planting, and caring for annuals and perennials. I do wonder why she chose to plant three smooth hydrangeas in front of the left front window. Those plants typically reach 4' - 5' tall, so they eventually will block a the bottom portion of the front windows. Also, if I have this correct, she has a drip emitter in the tall planter to the left of the front porch. However, I don't see an anti-siphon or backflow preventer attached to the Gilmour drip timer that she installed to auto-control the drip system. Because any emitter/bubbler used to water the tall planter is higher than the source of the water (i.e., where she installed the Giblmour timer), isn't there a chance that that water could backflow into the home's water supply?

Please, make an update on this projekt. I would like to know if the landscape fabric works so far or if they had to pull out weeds. And if the fabric affected the plants. Because my grandma has a flower bed beside the garage and it has awful weeds in it. I spent 1, 5 hours with diging it out. I don't want to do that each year again and again. And I really want to try out a landscape fabric now. I hope it works even with some weed seeds under the fabric. But there are 2 old Roses in it and I hope they will get enough water, because it's non existent to install drip irigation systems here. The water costs are too expensive to do that as a private person. And fountains/wells has usually nobody. You must always pay for water.

I had weed fabric and they grew right through it. I had to remove it ultimately and it was a heavy job. Never again!

Landscape fabric will prevent oxygen exchange in the soil, soil will become anaerobic, plants need to take up oxygen through their roots, if they can’t get oxygen they’ll eventually become stressed, get diseased, attract pests, and ultimately die

Laura , Your initial planting of perennials already looks compliments with such personality , color and texture and it immediately has that sense of : "Welcome Home " already spun into it ❤ My Question is ,Are yoi using more mature plants ? 3 gallon size ? What is your technique ? I don't receive perrenials that pop like yours even if I care for them in their pots for a recovery, plant food , lighting & water . I'm just curios ... I wish I could start as vibrant as yours ❤ Of course , our prayerful "kiss" and our smiles helps them and us * so much ❤. Thank you also for sharing a viwers comment recently about drip tibimg . she has affiliate links to most of the hardware and you can assume most plants are $10 for 1 gallon pots, $20-30 for the 5 gallon pots. Count up what you see in the video and you are good to go. If you want better numbers check out a local nursery, most plants of similar size are in a consistent price range. This should at least get you in the ballpark.

It looks like you have an above ground double check valve. Why didn’t you just add a valve to your sprinkler system instead of connecting to your water Spicket?

Be careful with flowerbeds next to your house. Dig down and get some protection from water and weeds against the foundation. People water flowerbeds, that water cracks your foundation and warranty companies void your warranty over it. Just happened to me. That's how I found this video.
