Hey folks, so what d'ya think? Do we give it one more chance on our forthcoming camping trip? Are there any other stoves you'd like to see us review? I'd love to know your thoughts, so please comment below :)
I was getting ready to buy one, thank you for the review. For the paint I know it's not ideal but you can get Hi-temp paint and use that. But hopefully it worked good.
Did the smoke stop coming form the top? Using this stove for a winter tent would be good if the smoke doesnt leak from anywhere....Thatd be a good test...Great review!
Thanks for watching! The smoke wasn't too bad at all, and we certainly didn't notice any leakage. The chamber became more efficient at burning later on, with little to no smoke being produced. We were actually impressed to be honest. We will be testing it again later in the year in a winter tent, once we've done some mods to it :)
Good question. It can be removed to allow cooking with flames where a higher heat is needed (stir fry with a wok or frying pan for example). Not tried that method yet though!
Actually, that stove is about $360 Canadian, on Amazon now. There are a few cheaper ones on there that look better (one with better, safe paint and more robust looking). It is just called a "generic SoloWilder camping tent stove" that is actually around $200. Has a nice little cooktop like this and is about the same size and the paint is said to be good to 1100 degrees F and environmentally friendly and non-toxic.
Back in May 2021, this was CAD$189, so was an absolute steal! Turns out it has a secondary burn inlet (the holes at the bottom pipe through to the inner chamber at the top) so it was an even better bargain. Can't believe how much the price has increased. That SoloWilder has the door mod we are doing, so good find!
@@DelsJogswithDogs Wow, so it increased over $140 since May?! No surprise, but still shocking and dismaying nevertheless. I've seen some crazy price jumps and Amazon is gouging big time, on some items. I just got lucky finding that SoloWilder one, it came up as a suggested item from Amazon further down on the FLTOM ad and I thought "hmmm, that looks like a nice solid little stove with a cooktop". And when I did look, the photos confirmed what I suspected, that it looks like robust steel and well put together. Especially for the price.
The Vevor certainly looks better, I'm not sure if the Vevor has a secondary burn air intake like the FLTOM. I can see the Lixada is a good price too, I think an upgrade may be acquired in the New Year!
@@DelsJogswithDogs . It does seem like an identical design but in stainless steel. I have just got but not tested yet. It is also larger and is very heavy. They also seem to do smaller but not yet in UK.
Yes, this is from China at this price. Once we've got more experience with it, we'll upgrade to a North America-made one if we can see a suitable design. I'm guessing this FLTOM will last maybe through the winter, but may start to suffer after that.
There's actually some really good ones from China, that use safe paint and are good quality and efficient. It's not like the U.S.A. or whoever, has the market cornered on good quality, lol. All depends on "who" in China is making it, blanket assumptions that everything that comes from China is bad quality, just shows typical Western ignorance and biases.
I'm happier with the FLTOM than I was originally, but I do have to agree - it is small and needs attention! We took it with us last weekend on a camping trip with a 4 person tent, and it kept us warm all night despite sub-zero temps, but we did have to keep topping it up every hour or so. For sure, with a larger tent, it really wouldn't do the job. Thanks for the comment :)
