Fluctuating Temperature Gauge Quick Fix on a Dodge Challenger
Should be Similar on 2011+ Hemi's (They do not have coolant bleeders, well not on my 6.4 at least lol), if this doesn't work:
- Run it from cold with the reservoir cap off and the heat on blast until it reaches operating temperature of 203 Fahrenheit or 95 degrees Celsius
- Replace thermostat and perform a coolant flush
-If the Hemi is running and has not exploded it may be a faulty temperature sensor.
- If the above does not remedy the situation then it is highly likely it would be the water pump or Radiator.
If the temperature gauge on your Dodge Challenger is fluctuating rapidly, it could indicate several potential issues with the cooling system or temperature sensor. Here's a quick troubleshooting guide to help you address this problem:
Check Coolant Level: Ensure that the coolant level in the radiator and overflow reservoir is at the proper level. Low coolant levels can cause fluctuations in temperature readings.
Inspect for Leaks: Look for any signs of coolant leaks around the radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat housing, and other cooling system components. Even small leaks can lead to temperature fluctuations.
Verify Thermostat Operation: A faulty thermostat can cause temperature gauge fluctuations. Check if the thermostat is stuck open or closed, preventing the engine from reaching the optimal operating temperature.
Test Coolant Temperature Sensor: The temperature gauge readings rely on data from the coolant temperature sensor. If the sensor is malfunctioning, it can lead to inaccurate temperature readings. Test the sensor using a multimeter to ensure it's providing correct readings.
Check Radiator Fans: Make sure the radiator fans are functioning correctly. If they're not operating as they should, it can result in insufficient cooling and temperature fluctuations. Test the fans by running the engine and monitoring their operation.
Inspect Water Pump: A failing water pump can cause coolant circulation issues, leading to temperature fluctuations. Check the water pump for signs of leaks, corrosion, or bearing failure.
Flush Cooling System: Over time, coolant can become contaminated or lose its effectiveness. Consider flushing the cooling system and replacing the coolant with a fresh mixture to ensure optimal cooling performance.
Inspect Electrical Connections: Loose or corroded electrical connections can disrupt the signal between the temperature sensor and the gauge, leading to erratic readings. Check all wiring connections related to the cooling system for signs of damage or corrosion.
Check for Engine Misfires: Engine misfires or other mechanical issues can generate excess heat and cause temperature gauge fluctuations. Perform a diagnostic scan to check for any stored trouble codes related to engine performance.
Consult a Mechanic: If you're unable to diagnose or resolve the issue on your own, it's advisable to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic or dealership. They can perform a comprehensive inspection of the cooling system and diagnose any underlying problems.
Addressing temperature gauge fluctuations promptly is essential to prevent potential engine damage or overheating. By systematically troubleshooting the cooling system components and performing necessary repairs, you can restore proper operation and ensure reliable temperature readings in your Dodge Challenger.

Bring the car to operating temp. Slowly open or release the radiator cap. Allow the air inside to escape. Fill with radiator fluid and repeat

Im pretty sure your car is supposed to stabilize at a certain point usually a little under the half point and not fluctuate really at all. I would make sure your engine coolant temp sensor works and also make sure your gauge in the dadh cluster is reading correct.

Many Dodge vehicles actually have unpadded temperature sensors which bring that reading to your gauge. Some fluctuation under heavy load is normal with Dodges; it is reading a true coolant temperature rather than a padded one like most other vehicles - look at the manufacture rating for your thermostat. My 3.6L’s stat is rated between 185 and 220, and the gauge will reflect that in normal operation and will definitely go over that conventionally “normal” middle line under heavy load - totally normal operation for many Dodge vehicles newer than 2007.

@@moparbro garage put fresh coolant in when changing thermostat. They said they bled the system. I dont think they knew what i was on about with the coolant bleed screw as you showed. Is it possible they did it another way?
@moparbro
@moparbro 2 месяца назад
@El-Armstrong hey there, some mechanics believe it's a self bleeding system, which it technically it is, so they may have run it with the cap off for a bit and air would rise out the reservoir hole. Also there my be a blockage in your coolant system In which a coolant flush would help, it's the flush where it's connected to a machine and coolant is pumped with pressure into the cooling system and sucked out through the machine as well. Usually blockages would clear through that. or a blocked heater core. Really for the coolant system. all there is is the radiator, water pump heater core, thermostat and coolant reservoir. so it's one of those. hope that helps

@@moparbro when i say fluctuate, i mean in slow traffic it rises to 220. Then when im moving it drops to like 190? Ive heard some ppl say its normal but i wana be sure. Yeah i think they kept bleeding it that way all day.

@El-Armstrong I guess if you are in a super hot climate it can fluctuate, up here in ontario, Canada it stays stuck at 190ish.

Hi there, just a question. When I have my car heater on high and fans at full speed, the car's temperature goes down slowly and even faster at idle. It goes well below operating temperature based from the gauge. I noticed on my car that it usually holds the operating temperature when I have the fan heater at the lowest setting. I took it to the dealership stating that there may be some play within the thermostat assuming it's stuck open, but they told me the mechanic took it for a test drive and it's working fine. I took a video of the gauge as it fluctuates to show them since I plan on bringing it in again. They said it may just be the design of the car and how the grill is designed letting the cold air in, but I don't think that's the case as I used their loaner car during the time which the gauge was behaving normally. I'm just wondering if you have any suggestions or anything else I should say. Thanks!
@moparbro
@moparbro 4 года назад
Hey there! Thnx for stopping by! The eninge temperature being dictated by the heater fan may indicate a failing thermostat but with It being slightly stuck in the open position allowing the heater fan to dissipate heat based on its fan speed. Also Considering the engine temperature drops rapidly also indicated a stuck open thermostat allowing the coolant to circulate through the whole system and dissipate heat away from the engine faster. Also another suggestion is that if it's a used vehicle the previous owner may also have put a 180 degree thermostat in as a mod, I think the hemi thermostats is a 220 degree thermostat. With 180 degree thermostats they open at the lower temperature which cool the engine at that point rather then the higher 220 degree thernostate. In any case I would just replace your thermostats yourself. The thermostats itself should be under $100 depending on where you live, its located at the front of the challenger and theres only 2 15mm bolts to get at, then rewatch this video and bleed the coolant system by running it with the cap off until it hits temp

@@moparbro Thank you so much for the reply. I'm not very mechanically savy, but you're explanation helps me a lot to understand why the thermostat is acting up. My car is still under warranty so I'll take it to the dealership again so they can replace it. I appreciate your help!

I’ve got a 5.7 hemi it’s a 2006 grand Cherokee idk what it is but I think it’s the water pump is bad because it will idle just fine without overheating or anything and it’s fine for around the first 10 15 minutes of driving but then all the sudden the temp just blasts almost all the way up and I have to put it in neutral and get it to 4500 rpm and it will eventually cool down most of the time but sometimes it doesn’t if you may have any knowledge of this problem I’m welcome of help
