Siemens and AES have joined forces to form Fluence, a global energy storage technology and services company that combines the expertise, vision, and financial backing of the two most experienced icons in energy storage.
Fluence will accelerate energy storage technology, increase network flexibility and stability, and enable the seamless energy transformation for customers as we build the new energy network of the future.

One of the next big things in energy storage will be the electrification of transport. Among the largest technically feasible market for electric vehicles is that market of electric buses and local delivery trucks and garbage trucks. The electric bus (eBus) market is the most mature and ready to transition market. The total number of electric buses in service is forecast to more than tripe from 386,000 in 2017 to 1.2 Million in 2025, equal to about 47% of the global bus city fleet. There are close to 100,000 buses in California and 81,000 in New York. Considering an average bus traction battery of 250 kWh, we can expect a new market development with electric bus batteries above 200 GWh, and over 25 GWh in California alone. There are dozens of manufacturers of electric buses already offering commercial products, and many of those have been supplying electric buses for almost a decade. For example, since 2010, BYD has sold over 35,000 electric buses and 14,000 in 2017 alone. In North America, some of the active players are Proterra, GreenPower Bus, Lion Electric Company, US Hybrid and many others presented at the annual ACT Expo events. Virtually all major European and other Asian manufacturers are also either already offering commercial products or seriously getting in the market. EV energy storage provides a clearly monetizable value streams. Not only that, but the value of each kWh is significant and possibly higher compared to many commercial scale energy storage projects. One of the reasons for this is that diesel buses are terribly fuel inefficient, spending a lot of time idling with engines operating variable speed. Imagine a diesel generator that needs to stop and start as often as bus stop and go, and that stays on while producing power that can not be used (while people get in and out of a bus, the engine runs producing no useful energy). Fluence could become a major player providing 'batteries as a service' to the eBus sector, kind of like leasing companies are providing vehicles as a service, but where Fluence does not deal with the balance of the vehicle, just like they do not provide the utilities with the traditional power generation plant equipment. At this point, with stationary energy storage solutions, Fluence market is limited by geographical constraints. my company (GPEKS) proposes to help Fluence enter the exponentially growing market of mobile energy storage used in electric vehicles also known as traction batteries. We have a plan for this. Contact me to discuss the GPEKS plan. fpouyot@gpeks.com
