www.thundermist...
Hello again,
This week we're fishing the wonderful saltwater using our secret fluke weapon, the Viper Spoon.
We've rigged up our viper spoons with both live and artificial baits and drifted them along the bottom, enticing fluke after fluke into biting.
Take a look at how we do it, and let us know what you think.
Until next time, good fishin'!

@TheFishingCentral Thanks for taking time to write to us and for sharing your thoughts - hope you are enjoying your summer and having lots of luck on the water.

You can use the Python in place of a Viper Spoon, however, it is a heavier spoon designed for casting, so the risk you would run while drifting is that it would possible drag bottom if you are moving to slow. If you are trolling, it will work fine. Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!

Yes - that was a slat striker rod & reel combo - if you get the medium/heavy action rod, it will easily handle heavier weights (3 oz will be no problem at all). The reel was a size SS30. Good luck!

GULP products work great on the back of a Viper Spoon! Also, as for worms, any worm will work, but if using artificial worms, we prefer to use scented worms as they will also leave a scent trail. Either way, you can not go wrong - the Viper Spoons will work great for you!

The SP2 and SP3 will accommodate a strip of squid and catch you plenty of fluke, but we prefer the SP4 size as it is bigger and also has bigger hooks - it will accommodate a strip or a whole squid :) Cut baits work great also. There is no need to jig them, you can let them drift with the tide/wind. Tie on a T-Turn and go down about 2 feet to a sinker and 2 1/2 feet to a Viper Spoon. So long as your sinker is heavy enough to just maintain bottom contact, you're in for a great day on the water!

Yes, you can use a penn 5500ss for stripers and fluke. It has a smaller spool, so you will want to use a thin diameter line to gain more line capacity. Thanks for tuning in and good luck on the water!

Yes - you can use conventional reels while drifting with a Viper Spoon and drifting is a very effective way to use the Viper Spoon - you will cover plenty of water and catch plenty of fish :)

@bay0wolf If you use the Viper Spoon with a strip of squid, you will catch all kinds of flounder...they can not resist the flash and flutter action of the viper spoon, followed by the trailing bait. All sizes of Viper Spoons will work, but we like the SP4 best, as it will take a whole squid or strip of squid - the SP2 or SP3 will take a strip of squid. Use the T-Turn and go down 2' to a sinker and 2 1/2' to a Viper Spoon with squid and start drifting - you'll do fantastic!
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 13 лет назад
@MrAwesomevideos88 This was a 3 oz sinker. Depending on how fast you are drifting, you want to make sure your sinker is just heavy enough to touch bottom as you drift. Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water!
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 12 лет назад
Yes you can cast a viper spoon from shore, but may need to add an in line sinker or some split shots about a foot in front of it, in order to get more casting distance and to get it to sink deeper. Once you cast it out, let it sink close to bottom then point your rod tip down and begin a slow retrieve. Otherwise, you can use a Python Darter and suggest using the 3/4 oz or 1 oz size. Either way, you can't go wrong :)

@potsky0122 Have confidence with the SP4's.We have caught nice flounder on them as well as SP5's. In reality the spoon size is only the attractor to bring them to your bait. It's the bait that they realy want. We use whole 8-10 inch squid for flounder in hopes to catch keepers.Many of the smaller ones will be detered and really that's what you want. We also use whole sea robin fillets.The tail part of the fillet is impaled through the hook closest to the spoon, then impale the others. Thanks!

@Holyjtizzle123 We fish Vipers using a 3-way set-up which consists of a 3-way swivel, a sinker and Viper Spoon. The rig is lowered allowing the sinker to make contact with bottom. A good drift will give action to the Viper working it close the to bottom but not touching. The sinker however, should be constanly dragging bottom. This is how we fish for fluke.

@1973Saved You're right. Doormat status flukes are huge. Thanks & good fishing!

@minus44444 They are both great for Stripers....the Boa Jig'r would be for vertically jigging but if you are going to drift or troll, then the Viper Spoon would be the way to go. either way,. you can not go wrong. Thanks for writing-in and good luck on the water

@TheInmortal1977 We have had customers purchase from the southern California region. Most purchases were SP5 Viper Spoons. We assume they were targetting halibut and have had success - although we were not informed.Thanks & good fishing!

@Jschlosser7 To take fluke with the Viper Spoon, a 3-way set-up is best (3-way swivel, sinker, Viper Spoon). The Viper will work from your boat with a good drift speed or slow troll. Send the set-up to the bottom and allow the sinker to make constant contact. The Viper should be travelling just off bottom. No need to cast or jig with it. Thanks for your inquiry!

Hi Chris, the SP Viper Spoons are silver or gold plated which protects against rust, so they are salt water ready, however, like any lures in salt water, it is always best to rinse them with fresh water, after a day of fishing salt water :)

@daves745t You're right about that. True doormats are huge. Thanks for sharing and all the best on the water!

@phantomx55 Get ready to catch plenty of fish! Just add a strip of squid to your SP2 Viper Spoon and good things will happen - it really is the perfect combination of flash/flutter/bait. Thank for your order and since you bought all colors, you can use any color on any day but if you use the silver based lures on sunny/bright days/clear water and the gold based on cloudy/dark days/stained water, you will maximize the reflective qualities (this goes for any spoons) Have a great summer!

@luckyfart456 Viper Spoons come assembled (beads,bucktail, harness). They do not come with swivel, line & sinker - this would have to be done by yourself. Thanks for your inquiry!

Thanks for tuning in - regarding the fluke sizes, it is all regulated so you have to ensure you follow the specified regulations. Bigger fish are better breeders though :) And by the way, fluke are absolutely delicious so if you get a chance to try some, be sure to!

@jnewton1989 We wouldn't recommend to use a Viper off the dock. It's best drited or trolled from a boat. Thanks!
@thundermistlures

Best to use an artificial worm and if you can use a scented worm, that would even be better as you will also be creating a scent trail :)

@MrEconline When we fish for fluke, we like to use the medium size T-Turn, as it is a perfect size and will accommodate heavier line as well. You'll like the medium size - it will work great for you! Thanks for writing in and good luck on the water.

Eh. Im not much of a lure fisher. Only thing I use is nightcrawlers on a 4 trout hook and jig that infront of those Bluegill, hop on and it's alot of fun reelin' those little suckers in, I tells ya! Good fishing, Ivo!

I see u were fishing 60 feet deep. Is it a good idea to let the current take the viper spoon and than reel the line in slowly. Also when the flounder hit do u have to wait to set the hook or set it right away?

I just bought some SP4's and the seem awful large for fishing for flounder. Is that so? I did see some very small flounder going after the SP3, so that makes me feel a little bit better. Does the size of the spoon really matter on the size of the flounder that will hit?
@nmigliore

Is that a Cabela's Salt Striker than Ivo is using? I was thinking of getting that rod but the low lure/weight ratings concern me a little.. But yet you are using 3 oz sinkers... what Salt Striker model can handle that kind of weight (or even just 2 oz)? Thanks for the help...

what size viper spoon do you recommend for fluke in NJ? Also, how do you work these viper spoons while drifting? Do you just let the tide work it or do you jig it? thanks

Just an FYI - a "doormat" fluke is 10lbs or more. In other words, a very big fish. You'll never catch a doormat that's undersized. Tight lines!
