An exciting day fishing The Billy's by the Bay Fluke (Summer Flounder) Tournament. Doormat fluke ruled the day that started in the fog, and ended with a race to the weigh-in through a dangerous storm.

You have to love the excitement that just explodes as soon as the fish lands in the net. Any fisherman knows that feeling!

John, I just wanted to say you are a great story teller. Between your editing, commentary at the right moments and clean shots, you make it truly intriguing to watch. I watched John h's version first and it was good. I thought yours would be old because I already saw the trip, but you really had me riveted. A great fisherman AND a great movie producer... who woulda thought! NICE WORK

My dad & I had a similar experience in Fl gulf..darkest wall cloud I have ever seen chasing us down. We were is a 27 ft flats boat doing 50 and it caught us just as we hit the dock. 70 mph gusts and torrential rain. Guys had to be rescue by coast guard after their boat capsized. Be careful out there folks!

It amazes me how much calmer that salt water is during a storm compared to the Great Lakes. On a bad day at Lake Ontario, the wave peaks are shorter than the boat itself!
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 лет назад
Yes! Lake Ontario is brutal. I got my grad degree from RIT and had a 16-foot tin up there. Great times going out of the Genesse and Oak Orchard. A wicked body of water with very steep and tight nasty waves!

It started blowing hard around 6-7pm outa the NE and we ran back in to the ramp because of it. We had channel 16 on the radio and heard them talking about down plane on the scanner. Sick stuff.

John what winds would you rather fish more than others? just looking for some advice my season has been a little slow in the Raritan Bay
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 лет назад
For fluking I'll take no wind or a light breeze in the same direction as the current. I don't care about the specific direction (east, west...), but want to avoid wind against current where they cancel each other and you don't cover ground.

@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 лет назад
The waves never got big. The wind blew from the north, and we went around the south side of Gardiners trying to get around the storm. The scary part was looking toward home and seeing it as dark as it gets in daytime and seeing the lightning. It came up very fast.

whats your opinion of that motor on such a large boat? This is what Im looking to do on my next boat
@26halkman
@26halkman 6 лет назад
It’s enough if you’re not looking to cruise at 40 mph and top out at 55. We had no problem planing with a full tank of gas (161 gallons), 3 large guys and two average size guys plus a lot of equipment. This past Saturday. We top out loaded at about 40 mph and can cruise at 30 at 4500 rpm getting 1.8 to 2.0 mpg depending on load, wind, current, etc. If you can rig with a non Yamaha engine, the Zuke 350 is sweet!

Looks like you guys realized trying to outrun a storm on the ocean in a fishing boat (or any boat) is arrogant, and a fool's errand. Good planning for weather ahead of the trip is the best defense!
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 5 лет назад
These days with smart phones and realtime weather I would add that monitoring is as important as planning. Sometimes storms are unexpected, but an occasional check of weather radar can help avoid trouble. That was our mistake this trip. We planned, and the forecast was good. We didn't monitor like we should have. When the trip was over I mentioned to the rest that we had 5 smartphones on the boat but apparently no smart people.

About 2 feet. It was more about the lightning, fog and driving rain. If you look very closely there is very little visibility. Neither John's video or mine caught the lightning but believe me, it was there and frightening.
