Program Notes
All three movements of Duet in F Minor are set in minor. The opening movement, Allegretto con brio, has a playful, energetic quality. The 'musical character' that begins in m9 curiously wanders around the 'musical universe' that is the first movement. This contrasts with the mournful second movement, Adagio lamentoso. The third movement, Allegro con fuoco, is a virtuosic display of passions that build to a fiery finale.
I've adapted this duet for a variety of instruments:
Part 1.
- Flute
- Oboe
- Clarinet in Bb
- Violin
- Viola
Part 2.
- Bass Clarinet
- Bassoon
- Baritone Saxophone
- Trombone
- Bass Trombone
- Euphonium
- Tuba
- Cello
- Contrabass

Would be interesting to to see a string quartet made out of this.

That would be very interesting! Perhaps in the near future when I have a bit more free time... hahaha

this is just the same piece as the duet in f minor for flute and trombone right? the one you posted like last week?

Yes! The title of the piece itself is ‘Duet in F Minor’ - I actually originally wrote it as a duo for viola and bass trombone, and then had a number of requests to adapt it for other instruments. I have just a few more different instrument combination videos of this piece left to post… Thanks for watching!

More enjoyable on the second and third listens. Interesting piece and instrumentation, definitely sounds a bit more esoteric with all the accidentals in the transition phrases. Listening multiple times made me appreciate the call and responses, variations on the overarching melody throughout, and it's development from beginning to end. My biggest gripe with this piece is it's difficult to digest and appreciate as a listener. It's tense throughout and the melody and general structure is too complex to understand and anticipate, making payoffs later in the song not land as well for a first time listener, one who isn't listening with an experienced musical ear, and one who isn't listening closely. On the first listen I thought it didn't have a melody at all and was thus a boring 16 minutes. It wasn't until the second listen that I realized there are multiple melodies sandwiched by numerous long and tense transition phrases. Those transitions stood out more to me than the melody on the first listen, and it negatively affected my initial impression of the song

Composing music is like many balancing acts all going on at the same time - one of which is the balance between making the music appealing on a first listen vs. repeat listens. I'm sure there are many who share your opinion - but I'm also sure there are many who would argue the exact opposite!
