I have a flute that I bought maybe 40 years ago. From you I have found it's kind. It's an Indian bansuri. I am old, 75, and so is the flute. I've had a guitar off and on, mostly on, for 60 years, but never thought to take playing more or less seriously until last summer, after a mild heart attack. I will be trying to better understand both instruments and music theory in the future. Thanks for the info! Peace.

The bamboo and wood flute sounds like something come from nature, that you are standing in a wide place with waterfall, river, forest,... All of them are singing for you... Sorry for my bad english, hope you understand my description.

The concert flute obviously had the most useful and versatile tone, but the least character. I was surprised by the glass flute which had a lot of character.
@ChrisLeeW00
@ChrisLeeW00 2 года назад
There are a variety of specialty head joints for the concert flute, such as wooden or even one that buzzes like a Chinese Dizi. These can be easily swapped for instant character!

The glass/Hall flute was a bit more "breathy" and lacks the clarity of the Boehm (silver) flute (opaque material notwithstanding). It's counter intuitive but the Boehm flute actually has more audible higher harmonics and in a sense is more "rich" than the Hall flute.
@miguelariza100
@miguelariza100 Год назад
That's not exactly true. It depends on what you are playing. I play all of them and more, and I can assure you that: there is not perfect instrument for everything or even almost everything: each instrument its field.

I liked the sound of the Bunsuri the best and the subtle pitch fluctuations as your fingers covered the tone holes. I would think the different shapes of the flutes will also impact on the sound, along with mechanical pads versus just fingers closing the tone holes. More international flutes ... yes please.

Very nicely done, Ashley! Although each has their own color, I think the most surprising sound for me came from the glass flute. I'm not sure I can describe the reason why, but it had a n intimate, maybe lonesome sound to it. The Bansuri was really interesting as well. I could visualize both of these being used in dramatic writing such as film.

What scale bansuri flute do you use in this video? In your other videos I saw you used other scales as well, I love your channel! 😍 Since I was a kid, I played the western (silver) flute. Now that I am being bored in India, I bought a C and a G scale bansuri to keep me occupied. The Irish flute has always been on my wishlist and the Chinese one since a little while too. You inspired me to just go for it and try all these instruments from all over the world!

I know this video is old. But I am very curious. My kiddo is 11 she loves the bamboo flute but has no desire to play the silver band one. Here in Canada we force every kid to play an instrument at grade 5. She has zero interest in any other instrument. Even to the point that she said she wants to skip band(not possible its a forced class) So I asked the school if she could just switch to bamboo/dizi flute, still side playing. They are not sure, because they do not think the sheet music will work for her. Can I ask, since I can't seem to find the info anywhere else. Can you just use the sheet music from your band flute(silver one) to the bamboo one easily? Or is it like too much effort for an 11yr old to learn and do on her own, since the band teacher doesn't want to help.
@AshleyJarmack
@AshleyJarmack 4 месяца назад
Hi! I'm happy to answer your question. 🙂My question to you is, is there a reason she has to play flute? Maybe there's another instrument she'd rather try. In regard to the question about playing bansuri or dizi in band, sadly I don't think that would work for a few different reasons. Firstly, they have a diatonic not chromatic scale. That basically means that she wouldn't have access to all the pitches she would need to be successful in band. You can buy flutes in different keys, but she (and her teachers) would have to know how to change what holes to cover and leave open on the flute to accommodate playing in various keys. For instance, on one flute, covering all 6 finger holes could sound a D, while on about it would sound a Bb and on and on. I don't think that the teachers would be able to help her out with an instrument they're not familiar with, especially with so many students in the room. Secondly, there is a different way to hold ones fingers/hands when playing that is completely different from the orchestral flute. Playing it with the same finger position as orchestral flute can be quite difficult. Thirdly, we can only play flutes that are as low as the stretch of our fingers allows. I am quite familiar with beginning band books. She might need to play in a different octave from the rest of the flutes because she might not be able to reach the finger holes of the flutes that would play the correct note in the appropriate octave. Finally, circling back to what I first asked, does she have to play flute? The reason I ask is because the trickiest thing about flute is getting the initial sound. If she's not at all motivated to try and practice until she gets sound, she might become very frustrated and in for a long year. Literally any other instrument is easier to get an initial sound on...even if it's a...not good sound. Heh. It's a better place to start than with the frustration of not being able to get a sound at all. I'm sorry not have a more positive answer for you. I wish I could say, YES this absolutely a solution for beginning band. Wishing you and your kiddo all the best.

I make and play Native American style flutes, and side blown Japanese four hole flutes. I would love to try another type and have been interested in Japanese salkehitchie. Cost of a good quality one is a deterent. I will try my hand at makeing one, provided I can find good bamboo. Thank you. I enjoyed the comparison.

A crystal-glass flute . Gotta see who makes them . What a big difference from the clarity of the silver flute ! I'm a composer found this helpful . Film composers especially need to n know this : would help with eras and ethnology .

@sandb1867

0:23 Sorry, it's not the material but rather the flute *design* that is the largest determinant of a flute's timbre (notwithstanding the player's ability). Unlike a string instrument, the flute's body or head are not anything like a soundboard. It is the air column inside the flute that is vibrating. The flute's chimney shape, blowing edge and depth are very significant as well as whether the bore is conical or straight. The next biggest aspect is the quality of the flute, including the smoothness of the bore and the seal of the keys and the joints. Speaking of the flute player's ability, you still need to find the optimal embouchure for your Irish flute, which is what I play; it's a bit different than a Boehm system flute. Thanks for the demo.

I understand you're perspective. This was one of the first videos I made quite a while ago as a "tone color" comparison for composers that were hiring we to record on their projects and were basing their tone color choices on samples or midi...which doesn't usually represent the tone color of the flute accurately. It wasn't a video meant to represent the full capabilities of each instrument. That would be a very different and much longer video.

@fingerhorn4
@fingerhorn4 Год назад
The difference in tone is not so much the material but the flute body shape, thickness, the lip plate or hole and other factors not related to what the flute is made of. Clearly the silver flute has more power, is brighter and stays in tune better because it has an infinitely more sophisticated mechanism, lip plate, shape, key system, tone holes and other advantages.

@AshleyJarmack
@AshleyJarmack 3 года назад
Hi! Thanks so much for watching. The lowest note on the flute is D, but bansuri makers usually name the tonic as 3 fingers down instead of all 6. Therefore this flute is sold as a flute in G, but can easily be played in either D or G. I have no problem closing the last hole with my ring finger, but I use pipers grip to play many of my instruments. If one is coming from a classical flute background, a person might find it a bit more difficult to cover the finger holes as the bansuris get larger.
