From a 1976 masterclass by legendary flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal.
In this video I have put together (with added subtitles in English) he shares with us the method he used to develop his glorious, expressive articulation.
I have added some excerpts to illustrate his point.
His amazing alive tone and mesmerizing articulation have inspired several generations of flutists all around the globe.
I hope you are as inspired with this material as I have been for years.
I want to thank Nilson Mascolo Filho for generously sharing with us the audio material for the masterclass.

I saw Jean-Pierre Rampal play three times in the 1970's. And I met him twice. After all these years I still love his playing. If you dont listen to him for a while, then when you do, you can really appreciate his unique greatness. He still has that special tone. His articulation is unmatched. He still remains all by himself at the top of the flute world. Flutists today can play loud, fast and clean, but Rampal has a very special sweetness to his sound. His attack is still a mystery to me. His playing is incredible. He was so kind to share his technique, but that doesnt mean we can all play like him. He is missed very much.

Thank you for your wonderful comment! You're right, when you stop listening to him for a while and you listen again it feels just great, like coming back home, yet with new surprises everytime, because he's artistry and poetry had no limits. He still surprises and enchants me as well.

I am not sure if Rampal thought he was so special. To me he seemed to be like saying if I can play so well, others can too.

@@gromleif he wanted all of us to play beautifully. He believed strongly in the expressive power of the flute. He helped his fellow flutists, never said anything bad about other flute players, and generously shared the stage with his students and flute playing friends. Peter Lloyd (already principal flute at the LSO) went to see Mr. Rampal (already a well established soloist in the international scene) for lessons. Mr. Lloyd told Mr. Rampal he was completely in awe of his playing. Mr. Rampal's reply was "oh, you know, I'm still trying to climb up the ladder". He thought he still had things to learn and improve. He believed that artistic development is a long-life road, and he never gave up, until the end.

@@gasparhoyosflute Right ! He allways tried too become better. When I play concerts I also try to make them an exercise to play better next time. His father, the great Joseph Rampal ( proffeseur a Marseille ) once said, when we where together in JP' s summerhouse in Corsica, if you had been practising more, you could have bee a great flutist and then he took his own flute and played the whole Andersen etudes op 24 by heart.

Yes, this is one of the Million dollar flute lesson master classes of Jean-Pierre. I have 8 of his bootlegged masterclasses in digital format and every single one of them is a knock out. 1 year of listening to those masterclasses and practicing them, my flute playing skyrocketed. Moreso than the other masterclasses ive done with other flute legends. Rampal was the best flute teacher. Because he knows how to put things in plain english that everyone understands. And he wastes no time.

Many non-flutists don't realize that Rampal's articulation is what set him apart more than anything else, at least from a technical standpoint. Great video.

3:22 🤩 tonguing practice using only ku(second syllabel of double tonguing) 1:31 there is a sharp moment when the note starts, but at the end of the note make it volumy like a bubble (vibrato) after this gets familiar on single tonguing, then get onto double tonguing practice

I had the oportunity to work with Jean Pierre and also playing with him. We became very good friends and workt together at the Accademi d'Ete a Nice and I was his host when he recieved the Soning Price in Denmark. He was encredible in all aspects, as a musician and a human being.

I love how the masterclass incorporated the techniques used in the pieces afterwards. How did I not truly notice the first time around? I just got a new but inexpensive flute recently, and I'm going to try to start playing again after 20+ years. Maybe my musical brain and soul are beginning to kick in on a different level. 😊 Thank you for sharing this. It's very inspiring. ❤

I've been listening to Rampal since the 1980-ties. During the last 50 years or so,I discovered many other top flutists, but in the end,I always turn back to Rampal to know how a classical piece should sound.

He's my favorite flutist among the greats. Maybe it was because I was so young when I heard him play. How natural. He has that certain something special. He owns each piece. Something about how he articulates a piece, I love it. Listening to his arpeggios , and OMG he explains how he does it. What a gift.

I saw him around 1981 at a Master Class in a small space and the one thing that stood out was how much better his sound was live from the records. Many, I think were not recorded all that well, except for the one with Lily Laskine. Also, he knew each piece the students brought and THEY ALL had errors in the manuscripts. The ONLY student who came close Rampal at the class was Angela Koregelos from the Oakland Symphony.
