I originally put my Betta in a 2gal. Two weeks in he was looking suicidal, which was kinda depressing to look at. Then I got the him the 15gal. He seems to have found a new lease on life and is no longer sucking the soul out those who come in to view him. Thanks, Fluval!!!

The high cost is due to the light and built in filter. Most LED lights that can grow live plants cost twice as much as the tanks they are attached to. This filter is better than any hang on the back filter rated for this sized tank. With the filter being modifiable as well I think this is actually a good deal. A 10 gallon runs about 15-20 us dollars and a comparable light is about 50-80 a good quality filter from fluval would be 30 to 40 you already surpassed the cost of this unit by buying everything separately and it won't have the seamless astetic this tank offers.

Fluval you should release this tank in a 20 gallon format. It would be great as a saltwater aquarium as well. The evo line is nice, but the flex just has a different aesthetic.

@MrDanAng1
@MrDanAng1 6 лет назад
QuantumDeath I own one and really like it too. However, the first thing I was doing was some modification to the filter! All that space and still only the tiniest little piece of effective biological filtration is pathetic or laughable, I can't decide. No offence to Fluval though, I have modified all my filters in all my aquariums to achive pristine water quality. There is pretty much not a single built-in aquarium filter on the market that is above the bare minimum standard and many that are far worse than this one. This filter actually reach a minimum standard as it is, so fishes can actually live fairly good life in it as long as it is lightly stocked.
@jettrack1
@jettrack1 5 лет назад
Daniel H so what kind of changes did you make and how I think I would like to do the same or something similar .
@MrDanAng1
@MrDanAng1 5 лет назад
@@jettrack1 I have blocked most of the bottom intakes to make an efficient skimmer effect when most of the water go into the first filter chamber through the top intake. I glued some plastic strips so I can put a coarse spunge directly under that intake. Then I blocked/glued most of the slits where the water goes from the first to the second chamber, so the water have to go from top to bottom in that compartment, rather than sideways. Then I have from bottom to top in the second compartment a plastic grid to act as a bottom part if the second compartment. About a kilo (or two pounds) of biomedia on top of that, then a polishing filter pad and on top I put the cut off top part of the fine filter pad that come with the aquarium. So the water will go from fine pad, polishing pad, biomedia and through the plastic grid in the second compartment. The third I done nothing too, except I have the heater in the first instead of the last compartment to minimize the risk that the waterline will come too low on the heater. And also, I have an airstone in the first compartment to have a great movement of water around the heater. I hope you understand how it is configurated from my description. I think I have about ten time the amount of biomedia in it now, and still, the water is filtered more efficiently mechanically. I don't use charcoal, except after the cure if I have to medicate an aquarium, I would just put it under the polishing pad for a day or so if I have to medicate that tank.

Thanks for this video. I've just set up the Flex 9 and this is the first video I've found that shows the water level high enough to enter the upper intake. I was beginning to wonder what it was there for ! Some reviews mentioned too much turbulence, so I added a bit of coarse filter sponge to the lower intake, figuring that would prevent stray substrate from entering as well as slowing things down a little. So far, I'm really liking the look of the tank and looking forward to getting it planted.

If the 15g isn't big enough to make a Saltwater hood/lighting for... which you guys should totally do, maybe with the option to add a second light like the big one... then possibly make something in a 20g or so size for SW....between the 15 and the big flex. Really liking these Flex and Evo tanks and if the Evo marine 13.5 works out for us, I can see adding a couple more Fluval AIO tanks to our house...the style and AIO setup really lends nicely to a display in areas where it will be seen by everyone coming into a space.... my other aquariums aren't always so neat and tidy looking...lol

Love this tank. It can be easily converted to a nano reef tank just by adding two cheap Amazon blue led tubes+ more filter mats, so within 50-60$ it’s reef ready. The only thing which might be improved is the flow in the sump, the panels need to be redesigned so that it creates a water fall between second and last (pump) section.

I looked at some of the "fixes" Fluval customers were trying to adjust the water flow for Betta fish and agree that they are not optimal. I am surprised that Fluval hasn't come up with a better recommendation considering the amount of internet chatter regarding the lack of adjustability on this pump. Yesterday I visited our local aquarium store - The World of Wet Pets in Beaverton, Oregon. They matched the Fluval pump with an Aquator Maxflow 152 gallon/hour submersible and adjustable pump. The Aquator can be adjusted to the exact same height as the Fluval so the existing Fluval tubing aligns perfectly with the fittings. It works beautifully.

Everyone is saying it, and I too can't help notice, that the Vista is marketed with soft-on lights to prevent stressing the fish, but the Flex has 'simulated' lightning flashes... contradictory, and seemingly without knowledge, or simply a bs marketing ploy. The center filter compartment layout doesn't look all that efficient to me either, and I'd be inclined to place a little bit of bio media in the sediment area below the filter to trap sediment there, and aid in it breaking down. Lastly, and perhaps the most important opinion I have, is the two output nozzles being recommended to shoot across the top, one need to shoot across the top to promote oxygenation, and surface skimming, and the other nozzle need to be directed downward, to promote water movement toward the lower filtration gate for lower sediment catching. To compensate for the surface movement flow loss, a small air stone could be placed just below where water flows into the pump/heater compartment. Perhaps this tank could use some revision? That's just my thoughts on it.

My 15 gal, works well, and is easy to maintain with plants. I don't mind the back compartments; I put a lucky bamboo plant through the optional hole in the hood, into the back area. I do wish the back compartment had been glass though, as the black plastic looks a bit dull. (especialy since there is a plastic mold injection mark in the middle.) This could have allowed background options. My Betta and Cory Cats are happy in it though.

I used a large sponge to fill in the first chamber, where the water enters for filtration. I found that the stratum I used in the tank would fall into the chamber- especially when the BN pleco would mess around over there! also, in the 9, where I have shrimp and nano fish (scarlet badis), they easily enter the slots, and, though they are fine back there, they are difficult to fish out, and you just don't get to enjoy watching them! I think it's an Aquaclear 110 sponge I used, for both, cut to fit, or you could use a new Flex sponge... or, even just use the first chamber for the media, though I like the idea of having double the media, anyways. that's my only complaint about the tank- the lower slots are a little TOO low. I'm not a huge fan of the lightning effect, or the colored lights, other than the moonlight, but those are options you don't have to use. I love the tank, the look, and the integrated filter, as well as the ability to hide the heater(of course, M-series fluval in both!). I've sold quite a few of them at the small pet supplies and fish shop I work at, and always recommend the extra sponge...
@fluval
@fluval 7 лет назад
Tyler, thanks for the input here. For the 9 gallon Flex you can use Aqua Clear 30 sponges to wedge between back and front of filter, effectively blocking the grills from the inside and for the 15 gallon it is AC model 70 foam blocks. We are really happy with how well the included LED's in this lighting system are contributing to plant growth, note that we used Fluval CO2 systems.
@Thegoodkingnado
@Thegoodkingnado 7 лет назад
Fluval Aquatics I tried the smaller sponges, but didn't want to have to reach down there to grab it, so I opted for the cut-down 110 sponge. plants are thriving, mostly crypts and H. polysperma, under the lights, I used Fluval Stratum, and Seachem Excel instead of a co2 system, as well as Flourish tabs, and occaisionally Flourish liquid.

Is it true that small fish will get caught in the filter (or enter the area at the back), without buying some additional thingamajig? Was this an oversight when designing the tank?
@fluval
@fluval 4 года назад
All filters use a grills at their inlet, this is not unique to the Flex aquariums that employ an integrated filter and as such is not an oversight. If the fish are small enough to enter the grill then it is possible to block the grills off with foam blocks from within the filter. The Flex is safe for fish in that they cannot get to the pump compartment.

I wouldn't recommend putting the heater in the return section of the tank considering that Chambers volume changes with evaporation and you run the risk of running dry.

There is no problem installing the heater in the rear filter compartment as it no longer changes with evaporation thanks to the bottom inlet grill, there are two inlets on the Flex, one at the top the other nearer the bottom, no risk of running dry.

@fluval
@fluval 7 лет назад
In order to prevent very small fish or invertebrates from swimming through the inlet grills, top and bottom on the Fluval Flex you can use foam blocks. On the 9 gallon version you can use AquaClear 30 filter foam blocks fitted into the back filter compartment so they are pinned against the grill and the rear aquarium glass. For the 15 gallon Flex you can use Aqua Clear 70 filter foam blocks, note that on the 15 gallon a small slit has to be in the foam block to allow it to slide over a rear supporting strut. Make sure to rinse the foam blocks at least twice a month to ensure they do not plug up and obstruct water flow through the filter.

I bought a flex 15 this week and waiting for the cycle to finish. the only 3 issues I have are that the holes for the intake are just a bit too large for shrimp, might have to put a spong behind it. - the flow rate isn't ajustable, might push my Tetras around but gonna have to wait and see. - last is it being a planted setup is that I can't get the hoses for the co2 in to the front other than those fixable issues, for the price I got it for and the lights (which are somewhat like the Current USA) it's pretty good

I have the 9 gallon flex and my biggest issue is the honeycomb on the back makes it hard to see into the compartments when you're servicing them. I don't know why they put it there since you don't see the back anyway. I also don't see the need for the storm lighting. All it does is seem to scare the fish. Not a great idea. I also wish they would make spare parts for the tank. The clip on my light broke and they don't make them anymore.

You all need a 24/7 light cycle on that 15 gallon or build a new model, but keeping it a cube shape not counting the 15% to 20% for the filter. I have a lot of tips what you can do to make it more economical & efficient. It would dominate the world of nano cube's and this filter craze at the same time. Wish the shade bar at the top of the glass wasn't forced on me. It's way too much. And isn't the dirty water going to drop out into the system when removing the sponges/filter media?
@fluval
@fluval 4 года назад
Hi Lisa, yes a small amount of waste may fall back into the filter when removing it for maintenance purposes, this is not a problem. As for the flow rate we do have a video you can watch for easy solutions to distributing current should the fish you have require less movement, here is the link for your convenience: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9uim8JE0-IM.html

Beautiful Fish tanks but, I don't understand the jump from 15 gallon to 32 gallon. My opinion the big gap is leaving out a lot of potential consumers.

That storm effect would surely stress the fish out.
@fluval
@fluval 11 месяцев назад
It doesn't! We've tested it with many species, including wild caught Discus, and they had almost no reaction to it at all. Of course, we don't recommend leaving the storm effect on all the time, but for short periods of time there's no problem with it at all. 👌

Hi, 2 questions: What's the distance between the botton of the lower filter grate and the bottom of the tank? What heater do you recommend to fit in the chamber with the pump? Was loooking at possibly the T100, would that work? Thanks
@fluval
@fluval 8 месяцев назад
Hi there! The distance between the lower filter intake and the bottom of the aquarium is 5 cm. The T100 is a great choice! 👍

Water in my 15 gallon keeps getting cloudy and not sure why. I've changed the water out a few times and looks great at first then starts to get cloudy again. Any ideas?
@fluval
@fluval Год назад
Hi Carlos! It's possible something in the aquarium is causing the cloudiness, like an ornament or the substrate. It's also possible you are experiencing a bacterial bloom, especially if the aquarium is new. This video should be helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X1_fo0JEdds.html

Does it matter what way the pump is installed? For example, in the picture you show, the slats and the tube are on the left side - would it matter if they were on the right side? I don't mean compartments, just the actual pump. Imagine flipping it round to face the other way.
@fluval
@fluval 7 лет назад
It would not matter as long as the pump is on the output side and water is pulled through the filter media as in the original design.

Is thier an adjustable flow control? Would love to get one for my betta but he needs a very slow current
@fluval
@fluval 7 лет назад
Hi BANTA77, the Flex is fine for a Betta. Although there is no flow control on the filtration, all you would need to do is direct the output nozzles upwards and out to direct the current away from the general swimming area.

BANTA77 I hear drilling holes in the the tubing that's connected to the air pump works
@eugenebarthmallow8350
@eugenebarthmallow8350 7 лет назад
BANTA77 you could also put sponges on the output nozzles to slow the flow! I used to do that before I had adjustable flow filters, but when I do get the flex ( hopefully soon!! I'm so excited! ) I may have to do it as well

I have a spec series for my betta which has a very similar filtration unit. I made a spray bar to reduce water pressure with out reducing over all water volume put out by the filter. It works great for my betta and allows for more even water current along my water column for better filtration. Fluval engineers should work this in the design it will make these tanks work far better for the type of stock one typically keeps in a fresh water nano. The extra 3 parts needed to make a spray bar would cost fluval pennies and give them a huge 1 up on competitors if they offered the added utility of a spray bar.

If you mean how will glofish look under blue lighting, we would assume blue glofish should look more intense in color.

Won't the fish jump out of the feeding hole?
@fluval
@fluval 5 лет назад
Highly unlikely. If you are concerned or have a species that is known to jump frequently then you can elect to put a small piece of black plastic over the hole, a small piece of transparent tape would make for "flexible hinge".

Is it freshwater only because of the filtering or the build material doesn't really handle saltwater?
@fluval

The 15 and 32.5 gallon versions do come with a skimmer cut out, suitable for marine tank use. The build materials are not the reason.
@mozarth
@mozarth 5 лет назад
@@fluval Awesome. I'll be more than likely getting a couple 15gs for anemones that are stinging other coral & a couple inverts. Skimmer wouldn't be an issue as I usually shiftmake my own skimmers using small powerheads.

does algae develop back on the filter chambers walls? is it hard to clean algae on those chambers walls for monthly maintenance?
@fluval
@fluval 3 года назад
Hello, great questions! Normally algae will not form in the back compartment of the filter as the backwall prevents the light from illuminating the sump of the aquarium. If you do get slight algae production, it is easily removed with an algae sponge. 😊

I was thinking about buying the white version but realize the silicone was clear rather then having a white color ... my feeling the best part on all newer tank; most have the silicone black rather then clear. Why not use white silicone on the white version as I feel would be complete for white Fluval Flex

Inside the Fluval Flex filter intake there's a small sponge before the impeller, what I'm finding is that sponge becomes clogged / dirty before any other part of the filter system, it ends up slowing the flow and needs to be cleaned much more regularly. I assume its main purpose is to stop large debri getting into the impeller section but is there any other reason it must be there? I ended up removing it because I was tired of cleaning it so often, let the main sponge filter do the work? When I removed it the flow increased and our water became clearer within a few hours. The tank has only been setup a 1.5 months with 25% weekly water changes, so its not dirty or grubby, that sponge just causes problems imo.
@fluval
@fluval 2 года назад
Hi there! That sponge indeed exists to help prevent debris from reaching the impeller. You can safely remove it if you don't want to use it!
