What is flux core welding used for?
Video Highlights
What is flux core welding used for?
The flux core welding process is excellent for welding dirty, rusted, or contaminated metals. This welding process is ideal for all welding positions and outdoor welding activities because of the flux shield. The flux-cored arc welding process is quite easy to learn and master.
What can FCAW weld?
This type of FCAW was developed primarily for welding structural steels. In fact, since it uses both a flux-cored electrode and an external shielding gas, one might say that it is a combination of gas metal (GMAW) and FCAW.
What is the main advantage of FCAW?
The Advantages of FCAW
Yields high quality, consistent welds with fewer defects. A high deposition rate, which is the speed that the filler metal is applied. Can be used in all positions with the right filler metal. Suitable for outdoor welding or shop welding.
Is flux core better than MIG?
Thin stock is best done with solid MIG wire. But when working outdoors in windy conditions you are better of with flux-cored wire. Welding cast iron or galvanized steel, again go with the flux-cored wire. But if you need to weld aluminum, then you need to use the MIG welder with solid wire (and possibly a spool gun).
What is a disadvantage of flux core welding?
FCAW Disadvantages
Higher electrode wire cost compared to solid electrode wires. More costly equipment than many other welding processes. Less portable equipment than SMAW or GTAW. The slag covering the weld must be removed.

If you’re getting popcorn, your polarity is probably set backwards on your machine for the material you are welding. Try reversing it.
@BlackwaterDSM
@BlackwaterDSM 8 месяцев назад
Usually somewhere by your drive rollers there is 2 wires connected to the machine as “+ and -“, you can switch them to reverse your polarity. Google/RU-vid “How to reverse polarity on Hobart Handler 125” and I’m sure you’ll find a video. I have a Handler 140 and it’s been a great machine.

Sure it’s satisfying, and can burn through mil scale and rust, but in terms of weld efficiency and durability, solid wire and metal core are just better, especially if you are working with clean metal. Weld efficiency really all depends on the welder and purpose of the weld. But 10/10 on the weld !!

Nice, but of course. Not good to weave Flux core. Been welding 1/16" 1170 Flux core for 11 years. All depends on the job and critical application, but good to always use proper procedures. All in all nice weld, but not good use for all application.

Bruhh why do people run uphill so cold. If you’re using dual shield and can see the weaves then it’s prob too cold. That weld prob takes 3x longer than I would take just running a hot one
