Watch how to fly better ILS or GPS approaches - and how to really hold those needles. Here’s an exercise that I always do with instrument students.

I was telling someone the other day, it's like a "MERGE" lane on an Interstate . . . You don't turn 90 degrees onto the interstate, you nudge the car over and merge not turn . . .

I like this analogy. Thanks

@@KRDD-KMHR Thanks, it was a ad-lib comment I made on a video I’m editing now, taking a 14 year old boy up flying last weekend….

Just starting my instrument training this week....after a 20 year break. Definitely grabbing your instrument app course! the VFR helped a lot! Aim High.

Cardinal heading and sink rate. Whatever heading keeps the needle from moving will also hold it in the center. Works for sink rate too

Greatest thing I’ve learned about flying survey and airlines IFR is where you are now doesn’t really matter, but the trend means EVERYTHING. Thankfully new glass screens and airline PFDs have trend vectors to help you out.

In case this helps anyone: My CFI trained me to switch the GPS (Garmin 650) to "Default Nav" and monitor my track and direct track while on the approach. Once I find a heading that held the DTK stable for wind correction, I set my heading bug. Then when making my corrections, I keep them to 1/2 the width of the bug as a reminder not to needle chase. It made a huge difference in my approaches. Just be mindful to keep the default nav screen in your scan as the wind correction required can change and require some fine tuning of the heading bug.

FUDGE! I wish I was younger and richer. I’d so get my instrument rating. Greetings from F70. I really appreciate your videos.

@@TheFinerPoints I am a newer instructor and have not heard of the concept of bracketing. Can you quickly explain that?

I drive 18wheelers and the idea of over correcting is why I’m can put my trailer wherever I want. I’ve learned the art of offset backing which is I only apply the smallest amount of steering to move the trailer and watch the trailer wheels to see what that didn’t before I apply input. I’ve never flown a plane but I assume this principle applies the same way.

Thanks Jason. I am going to try this on Tuesday. Flying to KMER for an ILS approach. Then to KMHR for the RNAV 22L. Then the VOR 01 from LIN back into Jackson. Great content as always. Looking forward to flying.

Flying instruments doesn't get any better when the needles are where they are supposed to be and not moving.
