Fly Box Organization and Strategy from the DOLLAR STORE!

The Dollar Store is the last place a fly angler would go to look for fly fishing tackle and, by that omission, miss the opportunity to buy very inexpensive fly boxes to implement one of the fly box organization strategies I discussed in an earlier video (linked below). There are several good fly storage boxes available from the Dollar Store - you just have to think "out of the box." Sorry for the pun...

It goes without saying that fishing is dangerous as a result of the fast water, slick rocks and other hazards that occur in random, unexpected places. You need to exercise caution, particularly in the spring when the water is high or during rapid changes in tide before you fish anywhere. You should always wear a life vest when fishing. Also, a wading staff will help you keep your balance as you walk on the shoreline or wade.
The bottom line is that you must make a judgment regarding acceptable behavior and risk and not rely on the opinions expressed here. The regulations governing legal access to fishing locations may change at any time, and it is your responsibility to understand the law. Nothing expressed should be construed as encouraging you to trespass on private property or violate a regulation.

this is what i came up with for a lightweight setup for my Tenkara rod and for longer backpacking trips i picked up a little semi soft clamshell type thing from a local Dollar Tree. it's about 1.25" thick if you over stuff it, and has a diameter of about 3.25". it has a zipper that goes around about 80% of it's circumference, so it opens up flat like a book. when you open it it has a little mesh pouch on 1 side with a strip of elastic to help keep things from falling out into the main compartment. i was able to get 20 trout tubes and 5 jigheads for them, 20 1" curly tail grubs, 20z of different small sizes of split shots, about 30 size 8-10 bait holder hooks, and enough of my homemade bait to last a solid 2 day fishing trip. and that's all on the side with the small pouch, and there's still a little over 1/3 of the space inside still open for some small spoons and mini kastmasters. i'm planning on picking up a second one of these, and a pair of flipflops from the same store. ill cutout a circle of one of the flipflops and stick my flies in that then throw it inside the new pouch. i also grabbed a set of small aluminum carabiners and a pack of large key rings so all together under $7 for 2 pouches, 2 key rings, a carabiner, and a pair of flipflops. which turns into 1 fly box that will hold at least 25-30 flies, and a mini tacklebox with a bunch of different gear to catch panfish, trout, bass... and ill throw the key rings onto the zippers, then used those to connect them to the carabiner which ill clip onto my belt or a loop on my kilt. the one with all the weights and the jigs weighs less than 4oz, so the fly one would weigh basically nothing, and be about the size of a hockey puck or a large slider burger.

For fly tying, I use a clear nail polish from the Dollar General Store for head cement or the Dollar Tree has the Sally Hansen's, Hard As Nails nail polish. They also have mustache combs to comb out under-fur.

There are a lot of foam sheets, the foam can be used for flies or used to organize the flies in the boxes.

I just found out about torpedo bobbers to enable fly fishing with practically any rod and reel. How about reviewing some of the torpedo bobbers and flies in a video?

I use an old altoid tin. I just cut down a magnet with a sticky side and place in the tin. The magnet stays in the tin and holds the hooks from the flies inside. I can't really organize it since it's just one big opening, but it's cheap and works for me

Now, that is a great idea with the magnet! Brilliant.

If you have some spare time, you can epoxy in some dividers made from old store credit gift cards cut to size. Works great & you know the sizes are designed for your personal gear.

The ones you threw away are bad solutions on the river but they are great solution for keeping hooks and beads organized at you tying bench. I use a similar solution from a craft store which has 24 tic tic type buses in a master. With a lable maker I now have done away with a mess.

I did the same with the round stackable setup. I labeled the outside & that system works for me.

Seeing through opaque plastic is easier to see through transparent colored plastic. The biggest issue with the screw container is it cross treads to easily.

Good ideas. But I'll kindly disagree with you on the 7 Day & Round boxes. Label the lids & you'll know exactly what you have. Also, I personally like the round screw-top organizers. One idea to use to take one of those 7 day boxes & glue foam inside it. Then, it becomes a lot like your $25-50 boxes. Just one idea....
