On my second day in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, I found myself within Cades Cove, an isolated and beautiful valley. Well known for its loop driving trail, the wildlife did not disappoint with Black Bear, Wild Turkey, and White Tail Deer being abundant. Jumping onto the Abrams Falls Trail, we made it to the famous horseshoe bend for some excellent dry fly fishing on Abrams Creek. Unique to the Smokies, Abrams is a limestone spring creek with great water chemistry and a robust population of Wild Rainbow Trout. Fly fishing for about 3 hours (exclusively using Adam's Parachute dry flys), we managed to catch a dozen or so Wild Bows up to about 11 inches. This is one of my favorite places to visit in all of the Smokies.

Most beautiful place I've ever been to. I'd live there. Mountains and meadows and creeks. Had 3 churches at one time. Couldn't believe it. How the heck did the people get up there with horse and buggy and carts and supplies. "Hey Bob, I found this great spot in the middle of the mountains want to get some people and head out?!" "Sure! Lets drop out of society and live the quiet life." "How long to get there?" "Weeks. And straight up hill. It'll be fun!"

great scenery, nice fishing, I remember hiking to the falls at age 16, about 50 years ago.

You passed some of my spots. Some of the biggest fish in the system are through there. 👍

Thanks man! My favorite national park on the east coast is easily Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Especially for fly fishing and spin fishing (single barbless hooks) for wild trout.

Your “talking to yourself” conversations are great, and I can relate…Beautiful stream, pretty bows, and some well well done fishing. Take care and stay safe.

Great area to fish i tie my own flies and have a few that seem to work very well. But next time you’re down. Goto Little river outfitters that is my local fly shoo and it is also in the back side to go into the park so you dont get to stuck in the traffic

I definitely have wanted to pop into Townsend and the Little River Fly Shop (I always check their reports online). Previously I've only stayed in Gatlinburg or Waynesville NC, but definitely want to stay in Townsend - close to Little River, Abrams, etc. Thanks for the tip!

Yo brother! This is my stomping grounds, I fish this river 10-20 times a year. How long did it take you to do the smaller horseshoe? This is the only section I have not explored yet.

The trout in the smokies are on the decline. I wish the parks service & forest service would actually try & address the issues. Otters are annihilating so many, then you add all the people catching & keeping these wild trout. The Pisgah NF used to be great too, but it has all the problems the smokies have, plus serial poaching. Guys take those casting nets & drag the pools & poach the trout. The states & federal agencies refuse to do anything at all about any of these problems. They just don’t care about the resource in the slightest.

Don't beat yourself up, there's nothing wrong with kiddie tackle...I mean spinning gear... Seriously, though, while I converted to fly tackle way before you were born, there is nothing wrong with fishing the way you enjoy fishing. Anyone who says otherwise has the problem, not you, and you're to be commended for going barbless single hook. H8rs gonna h8, so don't worry about them, enjoy yourself.

I primarily fly fish now honestly but cut my teeth (in my late 20's as a late bloomer) with spinning gear.

On my way to GSMP this May. Tx for solid info, great vids I have always used a fly rod . Shameful that you get hate mail, embarrassing too. You love outdoors, stream, trout, eco friendly, single barbless release.....the haters were likely Faucis army. I'm 70 and lol at your humor. But you say your dog is the handicap, I believe he has a diff opinion.😀. Keep going my friend. Gregg

Thanks Gregg, I genuinely appreciate the comment. Good luck in the Smokies this May. It's my favorite place to visit on the East Coast with great fishing, scenery, and wildlife (aside from the crowds). Can't wait to get back. Cheers.

I catch the same grief for my ultralight rapala and tiny x-rap fishing. The the way I look at it is, the purists should all be using primitive rods and homemade stuff, or stfu and go back to golfing or whatever Karen is into these days. It's not like you're tossing live minnows or worms. Even if you were were, we're still all fisherman. Why people want to act tough online is beyond me. Insults became a game of who can be the snarkiest commentor. 90+% would never come at you in real life. Keep kicking ass and ignore those perfect pigeons.

I mostly fly fish and I agree with you, as long you handle the trout with care and are having fun that’s all that matters. I still fish the trout magnet every once in a while. It’s mostly these snobby old timers shitting on everyone even other fly fishermen. I like to euro nymph in the colder months and in high water, many of these snobs look down upon euro nymphing even though you are using artificial flies that mimic subsurface aquatic invertebrates.
