Thanks for all the hard work and education, this seems like a tough bite.

Any time, and it is very challenging, but well worth all the effort.

Wow! I found an amazing video that taught me how to do surf fly fishing. I plan to start surf fly fishing in Lake Huron this Fall, aiming to catch a 10-lb Atlantic salmon or brown trout.

I'm so glad to hear that, as I said in the video this took many years to understand so hopefully it expedites the process for you/ Keep me posted, I hope you get into some serious fish,tight lines!

Amazing work, feels so good when you've honed in your method. Keep it up, I'm sure the adrenaline is high on these fights.

Thank you, my friend, it really does feel good. It took years and timing to make this season happen. Fighting the fishing was so awesome, but also seeing trout and salmonids swimming off the beaches was arguably just as exciting. I often felt like I was working a salt flat, as opposed to lake Michigan!

Do it, my friend, this season is moving fast but there's still time to make it happen. Your experience sounds just like mine, but I lived on the lake for a few years and that gave me the time to figure out what I need to make it work. If you're able to get a good sinking line with a 9 to 10ft rod, you'll be able to make this happen. I honestly feel this is one of the most unique bites when it comes to Salmon and tout. It's hard but when it all comes together, it's so worth it. I'm guessing you're from IL? If you want to get out and chase this fish, hit me up on FB. Always looking for more friends that enjoy fly fishing.

Amazing video thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Grew up in west MI and only just discovered this awesome fishing this spring. Was this in March or April? Ever just work the shorelines near piers?

Thank you for your kind words. We're so lucky to have such an amazing waterway in our backyards. I've actually been wanting to try this on MI side. The runs out there are so big and I'm sure the shore bite would be a lot of fun on the fly. I shot this video from the beginning of January to the end of May. And I do exactly that. I work in all the same areas I would if I were conventional fishing. Out by me, the break walls and areas adjacent to break walls with underwater structures prove to be the most fruitful. I'm sure it's the same out by you. Definitely world-class fishing to say the least. I'm hopping to get a video done for the Coho run throwing topwater streamers. should be interesting if it works.

Such a sick video! Always been my dream to surf fish steelhead over here at Erie on the fly, can't wait to give it another go this fall. Two questions: When you're fishing your indicator rig with nymphs/eggs, do you strip them in at all or just let the current and waves move them? Also, would it be easier to fight and land the fish if you were wearing waders and standing in the shallow water along the beach? At some of the spots you fished, it looked like that might be the case. Great video and awesome fish!

Thank you, and it's a ton of fun, even if ya get skunked, lol. Just seeing the fish an knowing it's possible was what kept me going when I first got into it. I did both when I was using a float, somtimes there was a nice chop and gave the flies likeley a nice action, and other times I would kind of give little strips to bring it into the strike zone of the steelhead. As for getting into the water, I did have waders on, but the rocks in the shallow areas were terribaly slippery, and there were pretty aggresive drop offs that were near some of the more shallow areas. But, on the beaches I would get into the water, which was awesome. I felt like I was fishing a slat flat in some areas, especially by the river mouths. Keep me posted on your fall adventures, and have a greate summer, tight lines!!

Hey, thanks for asking and checking out my video! On the South and West side of Lake Michigan, mid March to late May is typically the best time. Fall can also be good buts its hard to get be on the lake front when the salmon are on the beach.

are you mashing the barb?
@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267
@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 4 месяца назад
No, but the flies take a beating on the rocks, and sometimes I smash a barb if I'm having trouble getting out of a fish, or if it gets stuck really bad in my net.

Thanks for the great video. How heavy of a leader do you use?
@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267
@greatlakesflyoutdoors1267 Год назад
Thank you Rick, Typically I use 2.5 to 3 feet of 10 to 13 lb test when I'm casting streamers, and 4ft of 10lb test attached to 5 to 6 ft of 8.5lb test when I'm casting dry flies. Just make sure you chage your leader oftern if you're primarly casting streamers because all the rocks and trees mess the line up. I probably have to put a new leader on every 10 to 20 casts depending on what my back drop looks like. Thank you again for your inttrest ing my video, and please feel free to ask anyother question.
