Ya Flip, Humans in South Africa are by far the biggest threat. In my childhood home in the klein karoo when the yellows go upstream to spawn the local communities take bags and bags and bags of trophy fish. Very aggravating

Its true and upsets one as a fisherman but fish was created to be food for the human beings as well and in the bigger scheme of things its not that bad still. Big business polluting rivers are millions more destructive to the total cycle including what the fish eat. When people are hungry trophy fish dont seem to count. It never did and never will. We fishermen tend to be a bit over jealous about fish cause it provides is with pleasure only. Over the years I understand the balance more than when I was a young fisherman. Fisherman also dont really understand the important aspects like the one comment on this page by a guy that gets irritated because we dont have landing nets. Back in our days we were a few yellowfish fishermen on fly. They dont think but allow others to make up their minds. They will carry their landing net from one water to the other not disinfecting landing nets after every outing but worry about a person that handle a fish much more carefull by picking it up under the belly and releasing the fly. Years and experience taught me so much about crap that so called environmentally friendly fishermen cook up. And I have been part of it.

@@joelategan Yes definitely true, but i think the saying " as dit pap reen moet jy skep" is taken very literally. So sometimes instead of taking the days catch and enjoying it, they don't stop until every fish in a pool is taken. And they are such easy targets during spawn, there in lies my issue. Take your catch to eat and leave the rest to spawn, but they also see that they can sell them, so now it becomes a whole different story when money is involved there is also over exploiting involved. But i have not foot to stand on since the yellows were introduced to that area as a sport fish and is actually not indigenous to the klein karoo. Haha I am not getting involved with a "net vs no net" conversation XD

What happens to the fish in dams and ponds how do they spawn then?
@JoesCamera
@JoesCamera 2 года назад
Most dams have water flowing into them otherwise they wouldn’t be there. When the rainy season starts theres always rainwater flow into a dam small and big and you can see the yellowfish spawn in water flowing into the farm dam or large pond over the right sized pebbles and habitat for spawning( long detail) where there is no specific river. If there is no water flowing into a pond over right habitat they will not spawn or they wouldn’t even be present except if humans located them and put them there. If the water doesnt not flow long enough they will prepare to spawn but wont complete the cycle or they would drop eggs but as soon as the water dries up the eggs will die because it would be exposed to the air.
