Great video - very informative! Definitely want to see videos of trips, regardless of outcome. That's real fishing and you always learn something from every adventure. Thanks for sharing!
I know this vid is old so I hope you can still answer my question.... I want to get into fly fishing this year. I live in the US and we have some very popular streams for fly fishing. My question is, what setup do you use when tackling those MONSTER trout you have in NZ ? I'm sure I would not need that type of setup, but it would give me a good idea on what to start with. I am thinking a 9 foot rod with 5 weight ? Thanks for the totally AWESOME vids !
Love the vids dude, keep it up. Have one question, all the rods are 9 ft if I didn't miss anything except of course for the switch rod, is there a reason why you don't have a 10 ft rod for nymphing. It's big over here in NA, less arm fatigue, easier casting more distance etc. I know here on the tighter, bushier streams a longer rod can be a pain rather than an advantage but otherwise much more effective. Try a 10 ft 3 or 4 wt you may never pick up those 5 wt again. And a 175 gr commando on a 3 or 4 wt is money dude! The most fun you can have with your clothes on lol!
Mate I've always been thoroughly impressed by your videos, keep them coming fish or no fish. What would be great to see is if you can include a little bit of history, perhaps about some waterways (without giving away your fishing spots obviously), the area, even trout fishing in general.
Sweet Gareth. The little pad will be. A great option for travelling fishos. One day mate, id love to do an NZ week and include at least a day or two learning from your sweet skills. Are your rates on your website? 👍peace.
Hey mate. I noticed you use all loop gear. Do you hold loop above the likes of sage and Scott? Iam looking to upgrade my gear but if im spending $1000 plus on a rod i want to make sure im getting the best value for money. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers dude
Sam Black hi dude I am actually sponsored by Loop, but I fished them long before that relationship started, I do hold loop above the rest because I honestly believe the make the best reels around, and the rods a great as well, I have fished sage and Scott’s and the do all make great rods, but every action is better suited to different casting strokes, so what rod you buy should definitely depend on how it fits and suits you, and you will definitely find one in the huge loop range. I also like loop because of the die hard young keen adventurous, social media community that comes with it. There hole vibe just resonates with me, as opposed to the main stream and popularity of other brands. Hope that helps buddy. Out of interest where are u from?
Trout Hunting NZ thats good to know and thanks for the info i may have to look into the loop stuff. I thought you must have been sponsered, got a fair bit of money in gear there! Iam from the Palmerston North area so not far from you, spend a bit of time on the tongariro as my folks have a batch in Kuratau so i try to get up there as much as i can, however work commitments have seen my fly rods gathering a bit of dust as of late. Hoping to get out on the rangatikei this weekend if the weather holds.
Go talk to Johnny Gummer in hunting and fishing Palmy he'll help u. I built my own rod from swiftflyfishing.com with an equivalent blank of sage/scott/loop etc if thats your thing. Its all personal preference as Gareth said tho. Good luck choosing.
do you use other bands other than loop? I currently have a Sage vantage 6wt rod just wondering what you think of sage rods and how they compare to loop? awesome videos btw, would love to come for a fish one day :)
As a SAGE owner I can tell you they are drastically better than Loop. I had an Approach 586.4 briefly which was the predecessor to the Vantage. Wonderful rod.
Love all the vids!! You should do some demonstrations for beginners like me, keep up the videos, and a visit to like Manapouri or Southland/Otago would be cool!
Mean! Love the videos! Keep it up. Could you show us how it’s done rip fishing? Have tried the Kuratau rip a few times. Wondering if swinging the rip would produce??? Chur
I get confused with the opti reels. There is like 8 sizes numbered through #4-12. i just bought a loop cross sx 7wt and paired it with the loop opti runner(the size seven reel) but the reel seems and looks a bit to big for the rod. And it confuses me that you put the size 5 reel on a 6wt rod. Can someone help me out?
I need to figure out a good shooting head for an 8wt 9ft singlehand rod I bought a while back. Thinking of learning false-spey for some bushed in rivers up here in BC. Cant stand the double-hand rods. :P
sdpy hey dude try the OPST heads. There awesome. Sounds like you need at 275gr head. Here’s a link to check them out www.opskagit.com/store.html#!/Pure-Skagit-Commando-Head/p/51800109/category=7107639
Mitchell MacDonald hi dude I use a Patagonia waist pack, I went through all that stuff filming the vid but cut it all out as this vid was way to long. I’ll add in it another video.
like al of your videos it´s nice too tie some flies at the same time.. the gear looks very nice but way over my budget :D i have to tie a lot of flies and sell to gett near that :D
Next time you would be better off saying your sponsored/paid promotion by loop at the start of the video for legal reasons and You tubes ToS. My experience with loop rods has been horrible know where near as good as sage.
