Fly fishing in Sikkim, Teesta river. Nymphing for copper mahseer (katley) and Snow trout(asala)

Been learning fly fishing for a few months. Have also learned how to tie some basic nymph and streamer patterns.
It was quite difficult in the beginning, because it was winter and the fish just weren't biting. So i had no clue what i was doing wrong, but as the winter started ebbing away, fish started showing interest in my flies.
The rani khola teesta confluence is a few mins from my home, so i had come this day to try some nymphing or at least what i thought i was doing. I didn't get any trophy sized fish, but i got a lotta little ones. It just taught me where and how i should dead drift my nymphs.

I’ve been trying to catch Katle and Asla on a nymph for so long. Managed to catch few Katle but no asla till date. Been trying dry flies for Katle as well. I see them jumping on the surface specially in late afternoons. I’m pretty sure it’s taking insects from the surface. But still no luck. However caught few small Golden Mahseer on a dry fly in Babai river - late afternoon just before the dark.

@@drdenis72 thank you 🙏 I guess it must be the spots, because at this confluence I can always get coppers on tight line nymphing, or mono rigs. And on a strike indicator on the stream that feeds it. However, at other locations it's not as easy for me. Though I think euro nymphing would be very effective. As far as dries go, I still haven't had a fish on it. Had some small fish have a go at it, without any hook up though. Streamers work well sometimes when cast upstream, allow to dead drift and then work the swing slowly.

Which months are best catches? I have been catching golden Mahseer on a streamer. I gave up spin fishing for a decade now. Tight lines

@@drdenis72 I find the time between Feb to May the best. Water is fairly low and it gets much easier to get your fly to the bottom. I guess if u got a pristine stream with difficult access, then depth doesn't matter. I have seen Hoppers being taken fairly often in the jungle streams of Indonesia. I prefer small streams for fly fishing here in sikkim

Excellent nymphing bhai and I am glad to see and learn that you are catching asala on flies. Can you elaborate your hook set up. Is your fly weighted or you used separate weight at the end of the line. What size hook and what kind of nymph did you tie. I am trying to understand and learn about flyfish asala on artificial flies. Your style is like tight line nymphing or euro nymphing. I enjoyed every bit of it. Hope to meet you someday and fish.

Thank you! I use two nymphs. One is a size 12 and the other size 8 or 6. The 8-6 are weighted, but I still have to add a splitshot or two to get a decent bottom hugging drift. The patterns are variations of phesant tail, copper johns, hares ears, caddis larvae, etc. Yes I use a lot of euro nymphing style with a mono rig.

@@TeestaMahseerTrails Thank you and look forward to see more asala on the flies. This can be a great fly fishing adventure. Asala fights well and 3 WT. Fly rod would be ideal for this fish.
